World War Two / What is Mary wearing?
« on: Saturday 02 March 13 11:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have just got this photo and would appreciate some help in identifying the circumstance of the picture.
Mary Chilvers seems to be wearing some type of uniform. A woman riding a bicycle and holding a ?????. As Mary was born in 1881, she appears much too old to be involved in WW1.
Looking forward to some suggestions. It would have been in London in the Rotherhithe, Bermondsey or Wandsworth areas.
Thanks

I have at last been sent a picture of my Grandfather. Unfortunately, it has suffered the ravages of time. I do hope someone can help restore him to his former glory.

I would also be pleased if anyone could identify the uniform and the background.

Many thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can someone help Susan please?
« on: Sunday 30 October 11 04:45 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate a bit of a tidy up for Susan. She was obviously left alone and unkempt in a drawer somewhere and she's got such a great smile.
Thanks

Can't upload picture, says it will then it won't - and it is not too big either. Sorry. Giving up for today!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What did Abraham do?
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
In 1841, Abraham Colenutt of Niton Street, Niton, Hampshire had an occupation, but I'm at a loss to know what it was.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

London and Middlesex / Women Dispatch/Despatch Riders
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 11:23 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information about women Dispatch Riders in WW2. The initial group, 7 volunteers from the AFS and 8 from the RN began their training in late 1940 or early 1941. I know this from an article in 'Motor Cyclling' in March 1941, of which I managed to get a copy. I have a service record from the Auxilliary Fire Service, but this was prior to the change to the London Fire Service, those service records for my dispatch rider are not available/no longer exist (this is from the London Fire Service Archives).
I did find a single short article from one of the AFS riders, telling a little of their life and training. But I am really interested in any records, details of dates, duration and places of training, location of the unit, conditions of service, regulations affecting marriage and/or pregnancy and how long women dispatch riders were utilised throughout the period 1941-45. Did they cease to ride when they were pregnant? Did they return to riding after having a child?
The National Archives do have some references to Dispatch Riders, they appear to be about male riders or associated with postal services, whereas these dispatch riders were used for ferrying information regarding the Auxilliary (later London) Fire Service.
I would appreciate any ideas.

London and Middlesex / where , oh where, can it be?
« on: Monday 06 September 10 11:11 BST (UK)  »
My G grandmother died in 1936. I have just obtained the death certificate. I can read most things on it, but not the address.
The certificate states sub district of Catford,  Borough of Lewisham at the top of the certificate, but only the street address of the place of death and the address of the informant, which has the same squiggles followed by  S E 6.
Can someone please decipher the street?

The Common Room / Wedding cake dilemma
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 04:24 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for expert advice on these wedding cake pictures. Are they the same or is it possible that the same person made them about 5 years apart?
Why do I need to know? Well one is of my father's wedding cake, married 1941. The other is in a photo with only his Aunt and the cake, (she had married later in her life in 1936). She may have been the creator of the 1941 cake, in which case she knew about the wedding, or it may have been her own wedding cake from 1936.
I always knew about the first cake, but was very surprised to find the second photo, received only recently from a niece, seemed to match up.
How likely would it have been for 2 wedding cakes to have been same in the same style, especially as one was made in the war with ingredients sent over from Australia for the purpose.
Sorry about the standard of the photos.
Would appreciate any thoughts.

London and Middlesex / Where could Grandma have lived between the wars
« on: Saturday 31 July 10 23:19 BST (UK)  »
My maternal grandmother was born to German migrant parents in Fulham in 1881. She married in 1900 and from the birth and death certificates of all 11 of her children, I have been able to place her in the Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Putney and Wandsworth areas.
After the accidental death of her husband in 1924, (he was killed in a hit and run - a car!)I lose her until she reappears in 1939 in Brathway Road, Wandsworth from family knowledge - known by her older daughters who lived round the corner in Merton Road, and the address given by her youngest daughter on her marriage certificate.
At this time Grandma was living with a Leon Stanley Reid, whose surname name the youngest daughter used when she signed for war service in 1939 and also when she married in 1941. Grandma reappears in 1943 when she died at the home of her youngest, now married, daughter at Selsdon,Surrey.
My query: Are there any records available or any other references or records, which could tell me where Grandma lived at any time in the period 1924-1939? Are there any rolls, electoral lists, or the like?
It would help fill in huge blanks in my mothers life, prior to 1939.
Hoping that someone might have a suggestion. ???
