Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What Does This Say And What Does It Mean?
« on: Friday 08 April 22 00:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi.

This is from the 1911 Scottish Census. It lists my ancestors, his mother, brothers and sisters.

Joseph Bradley's birth doesn't say Ireland or Scotland like his siblings. I thought it said 'U.S America' at first even though that makes no sense but i'm not so sure the more I look at it.

Family History Beginners Board / Could This Be The Same Man?
« on: Tuesday 05 April 22 23:48 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking through Irish birth records and come my ancestor and his siblings. All well and good but my ancestor's oldest brother has a different father records.

4/5 Siblings have 'John Dixon' and 'Fanny Gallagher' listed as their parents. The oldest has 'Owen Dickson' and 'Fanny Gallagher'. All born in the same place.

Could Owen and John be the same man? There is no evidence they could read or write. There is a link between Owen which in Irish is Eoin. A name related to Sean which is Irish for John.

Hi.

Can anyone make out or understand what the name is/should be?

It is the father's first name...something...Gallagher.

Family History Beginners Board / Can Anyone Make Sense Of This?
« on: Tuesday 29 March 22 20:23 BST (UK)  »
So my ancestor Elizabeth Gauld died in 1908. She was born in Kildrummy. It lists her parents as William Gauld and Mary Gordon.

I can't find any record of Elizabeth Gauld marrying John McPherson. They start having children together in the 1850s. John and Elizabeth (Betsy) are living at the same farm in Towie in the 1851 census.

Checking the Old Parish Records I find William Gauld and an 'Ann Gordon' having children in Kildrummy circa the 1820s including Elizabeth.

I found William Gauld in 41, 51 and 61 census living in Kildrummy with a wife 'Margaret' Gauld. William Gauld dies in Kildrummmy in 1871 aged 85. It says he was married to 'Ann Barter'.

I can't find a single marriage record for William or Elizabeth. Can anyone explain that? Is it possible that Mary Gordon, Ann Gordon, Ann Barter and Margaret Gauld are all the one person?

Family History Beginners Board / Missing Scottish Ancestors - Where could they be?
« on: Tuesday 22 March 22 23:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone.

I have been creating my family tree and much of my family history lies in Scotland. However I can't find certain details and I hope some more experienced genealogists on this forum can help. I have been using ScotlandsPeople and Ancestry.com as sources.

Long story short, my great-great-great grandfather was born in Ireland (circa 1818), immigrates to Scotland appearing in the 1841 Census and marrying in 1850. Before presumably dying between 1857-1861. His death registration eludes me.

His son, my great-great grandfather, was born between 1857-1858 and appears in every census until his death in 1916. I have both his marriage and death registration but his birth registration eludes me.

The search is complicated by at least 8 different spellings of their surname and my great-great-great grandmother marrying 4 times. I've searched each variation as well as maiden and step-surname but no luck.

Does anyone have any insight that could help with my particular problem?
