Anglesey / John Williams, born Llansadwrn, c. 1845
« on: Tuesday 14 January 25 06:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for information about John Williams born in 1845 in Llansadwrn in Anglesey. He's the furthest back our family can go with oral history. Our family story was that he was born around Menai Bridge and became a tiler in Liverpool, and owned property, and I've found some records to back that up, but not many. Apparently he tiled some buildings in Liverpool today that are listed (The Royal Hotel in Smithdown Road apparently being one of them, but I've not found proof of that) I've had trouble tracing him before he moved to Liverpool though, and was wondering if anyone could help.

1881 census:
66 Lightwood Street, Liverpool
John Williams, head, married, 36, tile layer paviour, b. Llansadwrn Anglesey
Mary do, wife, married, 29, b. Llanbadrig, Anglesey
Grace Ann do, Daughter, 1, b. Liverpool
Margaret Ellen do, Daughter, 2 weeks, b. Liverpool
Jane Parry, nurse, widow, 64, servant? B. Almwch? Anglesey
Hugh Hughes, boarder, unmarried, 44, builder, b. Llanbadrig, Anglesey

1891: 4 Yamwath Street, Liverpool:
John Williams, head, married, 46, tile setter, b. Llansadwrn Anglesey
Mary do, wife, married, 40, b. Llanbadrig, Anglesey
Grace A. do, Daughter, 10, scholar, b. Liverpool
Margaret E. do, Daughter, 10, scholar, b. Liverpool
Hugh J. do, Son, 8, scholar, b. Liverpool
Mary E. do, Daughter, 7, scholar, b. Liverpool
John R. do, Son, 5, scholar, b. Liverpool
William O. do, Son, 3, b. Liverpool
Cath M. do, daughter, 1, b. Liverpool

He also lives at 4 Yamwath Street in 1901. His children are living there in 1911, but not him. I haven't managed to find an entry for him. Mary died in 1891, aged 40.

Obituary posted in Liverpool Echo 6 March 1914:
WILLIAMS-March 4, in his 69th year, John Williams, tile merchant of 39, Ferndale Road (late of Yanwath Street)...

He died in the Tuebrook Mental Hospital, so I assume he could've been there at the time of the 1911 census? 39 Ferndale Road in Toxteth occupied by different family at the time, the same address in West Derby is also occupied by a different family.

Marriage record: 25 December 1876, Liverpool St. David's
John Williams, 32, bachelor, builder, of the parish Walton on the Hill. Father: Hugh Williams, Labourer.
Mary Hughes, 26, spinster, Queen Anne Street, Father: John Hughes, Farmer.
Witnesses: Thomas H[cant read full middle name] Morley and Hugh Hughes (all signed)
The witness Hugh Hughes appears on the 1881 census.

I've looked for possible baptism in the area and the closest I could find to Llansadwrn was this record:
23 April 1845, Llanfihangel Ysgeifiog
John Williams, son of Hugh Williams, Labourer, and Elizabeth.

Haven't managed to find anything about his parents, or any census results for 1851-61-71, not sure what to do!

If anyone can provide any help, I would be very grateful, thank you.  :)

Lancashire / John Rainford, burial, Liverpool, 1820s
« on: Friday 10 January 25 03:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone find a burial record for John Rainford in Liverpool around the 1820s?

I don't have much information about him. His daughter was married in Liverpool in 1817, and her marriage certificate states it was with consent of her father, John Rainford:

14 January 1817:
Joshua Knowles, butcher of this parish
Elizabeth Rainford, of this parish, minor, with consent of John Rainford, father of Elizabeth Rainford
Witnesses: M Jagger and William Marshall (all signed).

There is also a newspaper entry for the marriage:
17 January 1817:
Tuesday last, Mr. Joshua Knowles, butcher, to Miss Rainford, daughter of Mr. John Rainford, butcher, all of Liverpool.

I have records of Joshua and Elizabeth living around the Byrom Street, Hunter Street, etc. areas in Liverpool. I also have Joshua's entry in Gore's Directory. They were both buried in the Necropolis Low Hill Cemetery.

I've found a potential burial for Elizabeth's mother, but I have no confirmation of her name, so purely speculative.

Liverpool, St. Paul
Ann Rainford, buried 9 June 1829, aged 67 years, of Ben Jonson Street.

Ben Jonson street was just up the road from Byrom Street, so could be a connection there, but nothing for John. I don't have a census record for him, or a civil registration so, looking for 1817-1837. If Ann was his wife, his birth date would be around 1760, in Lincolnshire (Elizabeth's place of birth in 1851 census)

If anyone needs some more information about their family I created this thread in 2022 about Joshua: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=866564.0

If anyone can provide any help, or insight I would be very grateful, thanks.  :)

World War One / Description abbreviations
« on: Sunday 05 January 25 23:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have an ancestor who had an entry in descriptive marks as: Scar Back L. FA.

Does anyone know what the two abbreviations mean. I presume L means left, so a scar on the left side of his back, but what would FA mean?  ???

If anyone can provide any help, I would be very grateful.  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / WW1 Casualty forms
« on: Saturday 04 January 25 03:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone help me read these WW1 casualty forms please?

With the first record, I can read everything except what is on the last eight lines or so. With the second form, much of it is a loss to me, I can read the odd word here and there. I don't understand many of the abbreviations either, I don't know much about military history. Would this be better to post in the war section of the site? Even still, I wouldn't be able to read the writing!

If anyone can provide any help I would be very grateful! Thank you.  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / WW1 Letter and offences
« on: Saturday 04 January 25 03:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone help me read this letter, and the offences listed in the other two images please. These records are for Edward Hindley.

I think the letter is something to do with the death of his son Martin, his name appears in the letter, and its dated the day after his death, but it is in such a poor state, I'm not sure if reading it will be possible at all. ???

In the second image, I think it says that he overstayed his leave, and was punished with "5 days" but I don't know what that would refer to?  Does anyone know, or would this be better off in the army section? ???

I can't make out all of the details about his second offence, but it looks like the punishment was the same.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.  :)

Lancashire / Mary Ann Hindley, b. 1901, Liverpool
« on: Saturday 28 December 24 06:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone help me find out about what happened to Mary Ann Hindley?

She was born in Liverpool on 7 December 1901 to Edward Hindley and Bridget McGovern (m. 28 Sep 1901, Liverpool). She was the first of 13 children, most of whom died in childhood.

She appears on the 1911 census with her parents and siblings at 4 House 4 Court Great Richmond Street, Liverpool and the 1921 census with her parents and siblings at 1 House 5 Court Great Richmond Street.

No living family members remember her, but they do remember her siblings, and what happened to them.

I haven't found any 1939 entry for her, there are a few potential marriages in that period, but using those surnames, I've struggled to find a match. I haven't seen any suitable deaths in the period either. Of course its possible she moved away, perhaps even abroad, but I wouldn't know if that could be proven.

Any help anyone can provide, or any tips or hints at what to do is much appreciated, thanks.  :)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date an old necklace
« on: Monday 25 November 24 14:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Not strictly an old photograph, but I've seen people on here talk about fashion on old photographs, so thinking it may be worth a shot to ask if anyone can give a rough estimate of the date of this necklace?

My mum was given this when her great grandmother (born 1891) died in 1974. Her mother at the time claimed it was 90 years old then, but her claims aren't always the most accurate, to put it politely. My mother insists that her great grandmother was the original owner.

My mother thinks the clasp is unusual and might help to give a rough estimate of the necklace, but the chain is not original, and was replaced about 15 years ago. The drawing is of the original clasp, if that's of any help.

Not sure I expect any results, but a rough estimate, like the approximate decade, or any further information, or a point in the direction of someone who could help would always be helpful.

Many thanks  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Criminal history
« on: Thursday 17 October 24 04:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone help me complete the missing words I have from this criminal history in 1861?

Here's what I have so far:

1857, December Sessions, as Ja. Kilpatrick steal [?] aquitted.
1858, March 27, as Ja. Fitzpatrick ditto [?] 7 days 18+19 [?]
1858, June 3, intend to commit felony 21 days ditto

The link to this image is here (https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FCCC%2FPCOM2%2F334%2F00090&parentid=TNA%2FCCC%2F2B%2FPCOM2%2F01208910). I haven't managed to find the individual convictions.

I'm also not sure what the second image refers to, this time it is in regards to the 1861 conviction.

Any help anyone can provide is much appreciated, thank you.  :)

Lancashire / James Fitzpatrick/Kilpatrick
« on: Tuesday 15 October 24 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for a death for James Fitzpatrick/Kilpatrick, I've got several results, but I'm not sure if anyone of them is correct.

He was born c. 1806 in Ireland, I assume Belfast, but could be wrong. He marries Margaret Quinn, but I haven't managed to find a marriage record for them. They had several children born in Belfast, under the surname Kilpatrick.

John, bap 18 May 1841
Sarah, bap 11 Jun 1843
Mary, bap 10 Jul 1845
James, bap 21 Jul 1847

Then they move to Liverpool, where they have several more:

Patrick, born 5 Mar 1850, bap. 10 Jun 1850
Catherine, born 18 Oct 1852, bap 10 Nov 1852
Jane, born 14 June 1854, bap 25 June 1852
Hugh, born 24 Jan 1857, bap 8 Feb 1857
Joseph, born 18 Jan 1860, bap 5 Feb 1860.

Margaret died on 1 August 1860. Between January and August, their family name became FITZPATRICK.

On the 1861 census they appear as KILPATRICK, but it looks like there was some confusion over their surname, the first two seem to have initially written Fitzpatrick, but Kilpatrick is written over it.

On 5 August 1861, James was sentenced to six months imprisonment in Liverpool Gaol for stealing a sack of wheat, and his youngest children were put into the workhouse. Does the jail keep records of its prisoners? Would there be any information about his time there? He should've been released on 5 February 1862, but I can't find out if he was. Around this time, his youngest children were removed from the workhouse, three went to the Kirkdale Industrial School, and the youngest, Hugh, went into the custody of his auntie, but I have no idea who that is. This suggests to me either he wasn't released or he couldn't care for them. The record from 1861 states he has previous convictions, but I can't find them.

I haven't found a matching 1871 census result for him, so that suggests to me he died before then. I've got some results, a death in Everton in 1865, but I've discounted this, the occupation is different, I don't recognise the informant, and the area was not where he usually resided.

There is a James Fitzpatrick who died in January 1869 in Banastre Street, relatively close to the area I've known him to be in, the occupation is a labourer, there is a matching Ford Cemetery burial (almost all of my ancestors in this area are buried here). I don't recognise the informant, Bridget Halligan, she was present at the death but there is no relationship indicated. I think of the ones I've provided, this is most likely, but I'm not convinced at all.

There is also a death I considered in 1872, a James Fitzpatrick, but his death certificate shows he was a soap boiler.

There was a burial at Ford Cemetery in 1873, but I couldn't find a matching registration.

If he committed more crimes, then I know there is a possibility that he may have been jailed in another part of the country, but I have had no luck tracing that. I haven't had much luck tracing their children either, except for Catherine.

If anyone can provide any assistance, I would be very grateful, thanks. :)
