Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / French handwriting on WWI card
« on: Monday 19 May 25 07:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi, this card is of Clarence Lee, missing presumed dead at the battle of Loos. What I can't make out is what the handwriting on the card says. I assume it's french. I've tried this in the war section in case it was a standard phrase but no one could suggest anything. Thought I'd try here in case anyone's any good at French handwriting...any help very welcome.

Armed Forces / writing on card of WWI soldier missing presumed dead
« on: Friday 16 May 25 08:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi, this card (sorry, not sure of what it is, my notes say "war card") is of Clarence Lee, missing presumed dead at the battle of Loos. What I can't make out is what the handwriting on the card says. I assume it's french. I've posted this here as opposed to the handwriting section because it might be something they usually put in such cases. Any help very welcome.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Yorkshire baptisms
« on: Wednesday 09 April 25 09:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, struggling with a Yorkshire baptism, 1812. I can get most of it, but not the residence.
They're Heptonstall of Halifax parish baptisms, if that helps with the place name.
What I have (helped a bit by knowing the family tree):
Hannah, of William & Susan Shackleton, "do"(domicile?) ?? , aged 6 yr 5 mo
James ..... 3 yr 10 mo
Grace ..... 7 mo

They are all listed at the line(s) numbered 23 in the image. Any help with the place name appreciated, it's not one I recognise

Hi, I'm trying to decipher the marriage entry for George Edmond Hay and Grace Crombie Dryburgh in 1917, unfortunately the image isn't easily decipherable. I've tried twiddling with brightness and contrast and inverting it to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've had to heavily crop the image up due to rootschat size restrictions. Here's what I guess combined with what I know about them (which makes reading it easier). Any help with the '?'s greatly appreciated:

FH Documents and Artefacts / Census - are they dittos or not?
« on: Monday 04 November 24 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have this 1891 census and there are marks that have been crossed out against two of the sons. The census transcription doesn't list them as having any occupation, which is odd given their ages. Do people think they might (or might not) have the same occupation as their father (the family business)?
In other places on the page he's used -----do---- and do. for ditto.
There are some other faint notes too. I'll post a fuller view of the page below the relevant image.
Many thanks for any help.
The sons are John H. and Frank:

The Common Room / billiongraves - cancelling subscription ok?
« on: Wednesday 30 October 24 23:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm wondering about subscribing to billiongraves for a short while as they've hidden their images behind a paywall. I've seen some people's bad experiences about trying to unsubscribe from them. Does anyone else have any good/bad experiences of unsubscribing from them? Are they ok, or should I avoid?
Many thanks for any help.

The Common Room / baptised twice in the same quarter? help!
« on: Thursday 16 May 24 00:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I was looking for the baptism of Jane Hannah Fish, born approx. 1846. On searching I've found her being baptised on 6.12.1846 (see near the bottom of the image). On looking at the image of the page however, I find her listed at the top of the page as also being baptised 22.11.1846. Anyone got any suggestions of what was happening, please? It seems a bit unlikely to have two people with such identical facts.
Many thanks!
