Europe / German records for WW2 soldier Killed in Action 1943 - Johann STADLER
« on: Monday 05 September 22 00:23 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping for some assistance to try and find a record of a German soldier killed in action in 1943 to help an associates with their family history .

All I know is that his name was Johann (Hans) STADLER. STADLER was said to be born on 6 December 1918 in Austria and was from the  Guttenbrunn. He joined the Wehrmacht early in WW2. He is said to have won the Iron Cross before being killed on the Eastern Front (Russia) in 1943. He had one son in 1941.

I have tried Ancestry however the records are in German and blanked out as I don't have the German subscription (nor can I read German).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

All the best

Not sure where to start with this

Seeking some assistance to possibly narrow down what branch of the German military this soldier served with. Only information provide with the photo was he was Austrian  who was killed on the Eastern Front. No name known. I can't read the writing on the back but appears to be 1941. On the left shoulder the numerals / number 13? appear to be on top.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated

World War Two / ID and Unit Challenge - L MASON
« on: Wednesday 30 March 22 06:05 BST (UK)  »
Located attached PC in a well worn old leather wallet endorsed with Egyptian hieroglyphic motifs (WW2 era souvenir?).

PC with writing on the back in pencil "Mr MASON 13 Longshaw Ave, off Cauldron Ave, Bradwell". Also written on the back was "Hair - dark, Eyes - Brown, Comp - Tan. Uniform Khaki, shoulder badge Fawn Parrot on Red on White". Photo stamped P & F Colour.

It would appear the photographer had taken down details in order to have the photograph  coloured at a later time.  Only other clue in the wallet was a 1954 Transport and General Workers Union card in the name of L MASON. Stamped Branch Secretary E WHITTINGTON 50 (possibly 56) High St, Wolstanton, Staffs. Membership No 312.

Having an Ancestry account I tried to search the 1939 Census however appears that requires a further / additional subscription I don't have. Very interested in identifying the Parrot Unit and any MASON associated with the above address. Many thanks in advance. Sturdy

Armed Forces / John Park LINN - 5th Dragoon Guards - Chelsea Pensioner
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 02:53 BST (UK)  »
Seeking assistance to determine if John Park LINN listed as a Chelsea Pensioner 3852 of the 5th Dragoon Guards in 1892 could be the same John Park LINN who served in WW1 in the Rifle Brigade / Labor Corps. The person I am interested in was born around 1870 in Glasgow, Scotland to George LINN and Ann Graham LINN (nee PARK).

I currently don't have access  to Chelsea Pensioner Records so any information as to this mans service history / reason for being a Chelsea pensioner and any personal details (DOB etc / place of birth) from either period would be greatly appreciated. Further to this I believe he had a son also called John Park LINN however he wasn't born until 1095 and subsequently went to Australia where her served during WW2.

Thanking you in advance

Armed Forces / Waterloo Medal to Moses PARK
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 02:29 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone might be able to expand on the information below pertaining to the issue of the Waterloo Medal to the following gentleman;

Moses Park
Rank:   Private
Regiment:   1st Battalion 71st Regiment of Light Infantry
Sub Unit:   Captain D. Campbell's Company

The information above is recorded on Ancestry however my limited subscription doesn't allow me to delve further. I am hoping there are other sources of information that may link Moses PARK to my Moses PARK of the Barony area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is an unusual name however there were about 5 Moses PARK in the family and further information may help ID one of them as being this man.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Assistance needed to date this photograph which was taken in South Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I have a suspect in mind who was born in 1838 and died in 1886 (in Port Melbourne which is next to South Melbourne).

Only a small portion of my relatives have ever lived in this area and was hoping those with a sharp eye and knowledge of the clothing he is wearing may be able to date this photo. There may be other features of the photo that will assist with dating. This was fwd to me by a relative many years ago so I don't have the actual size of the photograph or any details from the back of the photo.

From what I can find online is that the photographer David Elder WOODS operated from 1866 to 1907. Initially his studio cards were marked Emerald Hill but this town was re-named South Melbourne in 1883. My suspect died in 1886 aged 48. Does this photo fit that time period?

Any information / ideas would be greatly appreciated.

On the 22nd Feb, 1837 Convict John PARTRIDGE was lodged at Newcastle Goal (NSW Australia) for some type of infraction whilst working at Patrick Plains in central NSW. The entrance book records the following;

Page 1 - John PARTRIDGE - England (Convict ship he arrived on) - Norfolk (where from originally) - His Religion - Labourer

Page 2 Under Admitted
                    Date - 25 Feb 1837
Whence - ? P Plains  (Patrick Plains was an area convicts were sent to help construct the Great North Road)
Purpose - appears to read "For Windsor Bench at the ??? dealt with for ???  ???.  These comments may cross over into the next column in regards to how disposed of but can't be sure without understanding the words.

          Under  Disposed of
                    How       Sydney Goal
                     when     25 February

Can anyone decipher from the attachments the reason he was lodged at Newcastle Goal following a hearing at the Windsor Bench, and also possibly the letter before P Plains (Whence he came).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as it will give me a better understanding of what had occurred.

Many thanks

World War One / British military cap badge ID?
« on: Friday 09 August 19 03:33 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,
I am attempting to identify one of the males in this photo who I believed was a member of the Lancaster Fusiliers in WW1 however the cap badge worn does not seem to fit this scenario. I have been unable to ID the badge online. The badge appears to be a woman (Victory?) sitting on a globe or similar. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you - Sturdy
