Laois (Queens) / Help to decipher place name
« on: Tuesday 30 July 19 11:08 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can decipher this place of birth (from the 1851 UK census). I believe the last section reads Queens County (County Laois).
Thanks

Lincolnshire / Market Deeping population statistics 1801 & 1821
« on: Friday 16 August 13 09:34 BST (UK)  »
GENUKI quotes population statistics for 1801 and 1821 for Market Deeping on its Lincolnshire pages. Would anyone know the likely source of these figures? Is there a possibility there might be poll books for these years? If so, where would I be able to access this information?

Thanks

I am trying to find out what became of two individuals and have run into a dead end on both. This may be down to the restrictions of information available on the internet or maybe down to the limitations of my experience in resolving these sort of difficulties.

My first objective is to reconstruct the ancestry of William Holton. The facts I have are that he married Mary Brewer in Langtoft in 1793 and that he was at that time resident in Market Deeping. He has, at least, two children, Joseph and Mary, born in 1795 and 1800 in Market Deeping.  His widow, Mary, dies as a widow in February 1840 in Market Deeping, so that provides a range of October 1800 to February 1840 for his death. The informant on the death certificate gives no significant information. There is no sign of him in the Market Deeping FreeREG burial records (coverage up to 1812) nor in the NBI records index. He does not appear in the FreeREG or IGI baptisms for Market Deeping. I did hope, at least, that I would be able to find his death age and that would give me some clue as to his date of birth, which is more than I have now.

My second objective is to find out what happened to his daughter, Mary. Again, she does not appear in the FreeREG Market Deeping burial records nor the NBI records index. I can not find a likely marriage for her, although there is something of gap between 1812-1899 in the FreeREG coverage and there is also no IGI coverage from what I can see. I have not found anything in the BMD marriage records post-1837. I have searched census records using first name only, place and date of birth and reconstructed several possibles but they have not resulted in anything.

I am not necessarily asking for someone to find the information for me, although that would be a great help, but I wonder if someone has also had these sort of challenges and whether they could advise on the best way to progress my research. I do not live near Lincoln and am wary of hiring a researcher with such open ended targets.

Thanks

I wonder if anyone can confirm the baptism of Mary Holton in Market Deeping on the 11th October 1800, daughter of William and Mary, from a source other than the IGI, which is where I have found it.

The entry does not appear in the FreeREG transcription of baptisms in Market Deeping and I would like to discover whether it is a rogue record in the IGI or an omission in the FreeREG records.

Many thanks

Several relatives of mine appear in the 1901 census as school teachers and resident at Irby in the Marsh. The head of the household's entry reads 'Schoolmaster Bd School', which I take to refer to the board school built in 1880.

Does anyone have any experience of or advice on researching this particular school, should the records survive?

I have carried out some superficial searches through search engines, A2A, Lincoln Archives and GenUKI without much success.

Thanks

Surrey / Wealthy/politically influential Jewish family Guildford area 1930s
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 09:42 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone happen to know the possible identity or location of a wealthy and politically influential Jewish family in the Guildford area in the 1930s?

As a young man, my late father worked as a parlour man for this family until he enlisted for the army in early 1939. All I know is that his employer only employed male staff and that he hosted meetings between members of the British political ruling class and influential Jewish politicians, which leads me to believe that the host may himself have been Jewish. I assume these would have been discussions regarding the creation of the Israeli state and the Palestinian question. My father met Ben-Gurion or, rather, served him (and claimed he tipped well). I am making an assumption about the location - it may have been in a wider area - mainly based on the fact that my father was lodging in Guildford and had worked for Perkins Radio Service in High Street, Guildford.

I have been in touch with a researcher from Ben-Gurion University in Israel but I think they are more interested in important political figures that Ben-Gurion may have met while in England. I thought I would try to build up some information for myself and see if that results in any leads worth following up.

Any help much appreciated.

Staffordshire / Stoke War Hospital WW1
« on: Tuesday 22 September 09 09:53 BST (UK)  »
I have just discovered from a gravestone photograph that my great uncle, a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, died at the Stoke War Hospital in 1918. Family memories would suggest that it was from pneumonia brought on by the influenza epidemic.

I am struggling to find out anything about this hospital, despite extensive searches on our favourite search engine, WW1 forums or VAD, Red Cross or Order of St John's sites. The snippets I have found suggest that it was based in Newcastle under Lyme (or Lyne) and that it may have been a former union workhouse. I have not been able to confirm either of those (and the workhouse records are fairly extensive). I believe also that it was used for ANZAC casualties and that it may have specialised in troops affected with influenza.

My hope is that someone with local knowledge may be able to give me some pointers as to where to try next.

Thanks

In the process of researching my extended Rowe family (in this case Jane Rowe b Q3 1844 Boscastle), I have discovered a marriage between her and a Francis Dicker Rowe 10/12/1863 at Forrabury. The bride's father is named as William Rowe, which fits with what I knew and I have census back-up for her/them in 1851 and 1861.

For the life of me, I can not find Francis Dicker Rowe in any records, even though you would have thought it a relatively straightforward task with such a distinctive name. On the marriage record his age is given as 21 and his occupation is quarryman as is his father Charles. I can not find any record of Francis' birth under Rowe (or Dicker) and I have also tried first name only searches for Camelford, Launceston and Bodmin between 1840 and 1845, again without success.

So, to the census records. I have found a possible sighting in the 1851 census for the family living in Stowford Devon (references available) with a Francis aged 8 born in Saint Teath and parents Charles and Nancy. To add further to the confusion, Charles' age has been mis-indexed as 86 when it should read 56, unless he fathered a child at the age of 83.

I think I may have found the family again in the 1861 census living at Old Hill Launceston but again nothing is straightforward. The family has been recorded as Wrath, not Rowe, (references available) and this could be an error by the compiler, as the family immediately above is called Worth. The members of the family fit the Rowe records with Sarah and Simon being recorded as being born in Devon, as they are in the 1851. Also, Francis is recorded as Francis D, and that is the first time a confirmation of his middle initial has appeared.

So, who is Francis Dicker Rowe - where and when was he born and why are the records conspiring to preserve his anonymity? Just one more twist, his wife is recorded as widowed in the 1871 census, living next door to the post office in Boscastle with two young children - and I have been unable to find her husband's death record.

Any help much appreciated.
