George and Eliza are my great great grandparents.  They were married in St Peter's Church Great Berkhamstead on 29 June 1842.  This detail is provided in a family Bible - nearest corroboration is a Civil registration record .  The Bible also tells me Eliza's parents were William and Ann Gripper of Hatfield, and Ann was the daughter of James Stevens of Irving Grove, Herts.  I can't find any information about him via Ancestry or Family Search.   In marriage notices in the newspapers, Eliza's father is shown as 'the late William Gripper' and Ann is not mentioned.  I have accessed a will for a William Gripper of Hertford who died in 1840 but the will doesn't name a wife or daughters so I don't think it's my man.  George Coleman's parents George Coleman and Sarah Whitbread were married at St Marylebone, Westminster on 9 March 1809 which is also where their son George was baptised on 5 August 1813.  Can anyone suggest how/ where I might search for more information about these people?  I'm trying to understand why George and Eliza migrated to South Africa soon after marrying.

I've attached an image of Eliza's baptism record - she was nearly 3 years old when she was baptised along with her sister Jane.  Her father's occupation is shown as Coal Merchant.

South Africa / Immigrants, emigrants and Birth records 1840's
« on: Friday 21 March 25 09:00 GMT (UK)  »
Ancestors of mine, George Coleman and his wife Eliza (nee Gripper) were married in Berkhamsted, Herts. on 29 June 1842.  I would love to know George's trade/ occupation.  By September 1843 they were in the Cape Colony : their first child George Whitbread Spence was born there that month.  Second child Harry Gripper was born on 6 May 1847.  I have found a baptism record for George but no South African record for Harry.  I don't know what brought them to the Cape or what changed their minds about staying - but at the height of the Neptune drama in September 1849 George booked a passage to Adelaide South Australia.  Eliza and the two boys followed 7 months later.  In Port Adelaide, George obtained work as a clerk to the Emigration Officer.
I've been trying to find out something about George in particular : what was his trade?  What was he doing in South Africa?  I'm also hoping there might be a birth and/ or baptism notice for Harry.  If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful

Family History Beginners Board / Trying to find a report in a local paper 1835
« on: Monday 13 May 24 01:14 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Francis Wetton who was tried at the Derbyshire Quarter sessions at Chesterfield in April 1835 for stealing money by false pretences.  He was transported for 7 years.
The National Archives summary (https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C12761411  ) states :
Annotated : This application prays  for the actual transportation of the prisoner on account of his notorious behaviour.  Correspondence: Letter from 33 inhabitants of Castle Donington, Leicestershire.  They state that the convict is of the most notorious character and a danger to society at large; as a clerk to several attorneys he has used forgery, false representation and unlawful means to reduce the families to poverty.
So my questions are - 1.  Why can I find no report of this case in local papers?  (I have searched long and hard via BNA)  and 2.  How come he only got 7 years ?
