The Lighter Side / College project for students remembering WW1
« on: Thursday 01 May 14 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

I am a teacher at a College in Kent (K College). As part of remembering WW1 100 centenary, departments have been asked to put on events / exhibitions for the students and public which will be on display in our reception at the college and also on display during an Art & Media show the students will be presenting.

As a media/photography department we are making a display of montages which will represent different themes of the war e.g., trenchwarfare, homelife, soldiers portraits, the King's posters etc.

What i am asking is if anyone would be willing to scan and email any of their relative photographs or letters which may have been sent home, photographs of any memorabilia that you may have and would be happy for students to use the images to create photographic montages.

If you are happy to contribute please PM me on here and i will send my work address over.

Hi

I'm not sure if this has been uploaded already, but i found it really useful when i first saw it a few days ago (as well as interesting). It shows where all workers onboard the titanic, lost and survived, where they lived in Southampton in 2012. It can also tell you old road names.

The daily echo also has links to other relative articles regarding Titanic. Hope it can help some people out there.

Hello

I am interested in finding out more about the American base camp based near by Crawley (winchester, hampshire) in WW2 and the German P.O.W detainees who worked around and in the village. I am interested in this because i have recently found pictures of my family with scribbled notes of things like German POW painting Wall and American Joe,jim and dave and me (dolly mixture) --a nickname given to my great nan from Americans because it was the only sweets in the shop at the time. Also a picture labelled German POW making toys for the village children.

I want to try and compile the pictures and get as many names as possible. It seems alot of the pictures seems to go with some 'memory notes' my great nan wrote down when i was a little girl. So if someone could point me in the right direction of what/ where the american bases were and the germans site were i'd be grateful.

My family (surname-Packard) use to own the only village shop/post office during WW2 and managed the Fox & Hound pub (which still exists today as does the shop/postoffice- it is now a house and has been for many years)

Packard (s) were also known to have written to/for the hampshire chronicle and avidly involved in the Crawley Cricket team.

If you lived in Crawley or know about Crawley area from this time please contact.

My family left crawley in the 1950's to Southampton. See below for names;

Daisy Packard nee Evans (known as dolly mixture)
Robert Packard
Pamela Packard
Gwendoline Packard (died between 1935-1945)
Walter George Packard aka george packard
James Packard aka Jim
Charlie Evans (cousin to daisy/nephew stayed till 1953ish in crawley.

The book based on Crawley winchester featues a pic of my family stood outside the shop/postoffice with 2 female employees. i forget names?!

Thanks for taking your  time to look at this

Armed Forces / query on searching war records
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 21:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello

this is probably posted somewhere else all ready. But... how do you search war records when all you know is their name and the fact that they served but have no other details? I've searched a few records but you have to pay to view the results. Is there anyway in clarifying?

( just so you know i am planning to start searching a few different members of family from different parts of England)

For the majority of the different member i know what counties they came from and have searched surrounding if they didnot appear in their own due to marriage and moving etc.

Is the only way you can be accurate in making sure the correct say medal card is if you order it or is there other ways you can ensure you have correct one?

*confused* Hope that hasnt hurt your head as much as its hurt mine re reading this!

« on: Monday 08 March 10 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm attaching the marriage cert of my g.g. grandparents and i'm having trouble reading the marriage cert from paper.

what i cant read well is;

in the district of Hartlepool in the counties of ? and west hartlepool
the rank or profession of Robert Raw (driver, army service? ? ?
Both robert and Ellens Residence at time of marriage (i partially make out''royal pavillion ? Bath)
The profession for Michael Kelly.
Also trying to decifer who the witness's are - mary?

Supposedly to family tales the Kelly side of the family pretty much disowned/ didnt see eye to eye over the marriage as Ellen changed her religion to match Robert. (she was orig catholic)

your help will be appreciated
