Cumberland / Robert Marshall Kendal 1846 Military Desertion?
« on: Saturday 25 January 25 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I found a record on ancestry entitled UK, Registers of Habitual Criminals and Police Gazettes, 1834-1934 potentially relating to my 3x G Uncle Robert Marshall born 1846 Kendal to Richard Marshall and Jane Beetham.

The only census record for Robert I have managed to find is the the 1851 census where he is 4 Years old living with his parents. There is only 1 death for a Robert Marshall in 1850 - he's on the 1851 census so I have discounted that.

The record states he was in the Manchester regiment and was charged with desertion in Ashton Under Lyme service number 1417 gives his birth date of 1846 and born in Kendal.

Here is a link to the record

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61812/records/254430?tid=194244452&pid=142647147866&ssrc=pt

So I am wondering if this is indeed him, or if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Many thanks for any potential help

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Thompson Carlisle & India 1880-1890
« on: Monday 20 January 25 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, would anyone be able to help with the images attached.

The first image is of my GG Grandfather Edward Thomas Thompson born 1870 St Pancras, London, his wife Isabella Fulton born 1871 Cummersdale, Carlisle and their daughter Maud born 1888 Carlisle. This photo is believed to have been taken in Carlisle in 1888/9.

Edward was a solider in the Border Regiment, I believe he was a drummer and served in India as the couple had two children born there. They had 11 in total.

The second is reportedly Maud Thompson with her uncle  Arthur Thompson taken in Mooltan India 1897. Although I am not sure this is correct, I believe it could be Edward as I cannot find any information for an Arthur Thompson. No birth registrations for an Arthur Thompson with mother's maiden name Partridge and no Arthur Thompson living with the family in census returns etc. Both these images were taken from a family tree on ancestry some years ago.

Any help greatly appreciated I think they have been scanned/copied many times so not the best quality.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Frank Mursell Nov 1861, Bembridge, Brading
« on: Sunday 12 January 25 13:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I found my 1st Cousin 5x removed on the 1871 census living as the 'son' of Walter and Amelia (nee Jobling Mursell). However when I looked deeper, Walter and Amelia had a daughter in 1861 Ellen Sophia Mursell.

I did a search on the GRO and the maiden name of Frank's mother is also given as Mursell, the rest of Walter's children have the correct maiden name of their mother, Jobling.

This intrigued me so I paid and downloaded the digital image of Franks Birth.

Sadly the top part of the scan is missing, I have contacted GRO about this as I've come across the issue before.

However I can make out it states Franks father was Charles Mursell. The mother's first name is cut off but states Mursell formerly Mursell. It gives Charles job as licensed Victualler. Mother was present at the birth.

Could the correct father be Charles Mursell who was my 4x great grandfather and the brother of Walter? 2nd November 1822 Cowes, died 30 April 1871. He was married to Eliza Henrietta Harber and was a shoe maker.

But Charles and Eliza Henrietta had a son in 1861 called Robert Henry Mursell  ??? ??? ???

Looking at GRO the correct mother's maiden name for RH Mursell is Harber.

Could Frank have been an illegitimate child of Charles?? and his brother has taken him in?

Any help cleaning up this mystery would be greatly appreciated!

Family History Beginners Board / Thomas Wiliam Hetherington 1939 Register
« on: Saturday 11 January 25 20:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

My dad who is a member of Find My Past has found one of our ancestors in the 1939 register Thomas William Hetherington, his wife Maggie and their son David.

Thomas is listed as a master undertaker, his wife is classed as a housewife, and their son David an undertaker and carpenter. Living in Redcar.

I've searched and searched using different spellings of Hetherington on Ancestry as I wish to add it to my tree on there but still cannot find the record. I'm assuming it's been incorrectly transcribed.

Thomas William Hetherington born 26 March 1889 Brampton, Cumbria.

Many thanks

Is anyone able to help with finding the record on ancestry?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Adolphus Charles Tilbury Alverstoke
« on: Saturday 11 January 25 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for some help regarding my 1st cousin 5x removed Adolphus Charles Tilbury born 11 Feb 1867 born to Charles Tilbury and Ellen Susannah Mursell.

He was married to Mary - I found on ancestry a marriage record for Adolphus Charles Tilbury to a Mary Ann Knipe. A lot of trees on ancestry has his wife as a Mary Ann Waldron but I can't find any marriage records for this. I know ancestry trees are notorious for error.

Also in the 1901 census Adolphus is living with his wife Mary Ann and child Edith Tilbury aged 12 born Gosport.

I can't find any birth records for an Edith Tilbury with mother's maiden name Knipe or Waldron.

A search on the British Newspaper Archive shows that Adolphus was in and out of trouble. His father Charles was a butcher turned cab owner, Adolphus was also a butcher in his earlier life but went into cab driving/owner later on. He went to prison for stealing in 1905. There are also newspaper articles regarding him abandoning his wife but I can only access the newspaper archive when I visit my local library at the moment. There is also a free article on there about him being charged for cruelty to animals.

Any help provided would be greatly appreciated

Hello,

I am looking for some help in regards to dating and restoring this photograph of my Great Grandmother born 1902 in Ardrossan, Scotland.

I don't know where the photograph was taken, but her parents were from Dromore, Down, Northern Ireland. Her mother died in 1909 and it has been suggested that she was informally adopted as she spent time in the poor house with her brother James when her mother Sarah died and her father deserted the family.

I am not sure who the other two women in the photographs are, but someone in the family suggested one could be an aunt, I'm assuming that would be the lady in the middle. My GG is the one on the right. I do love this photograph especially the expression on the lady on the lefts face.  :)

Many thanks for any help provided
