Cheshire / John Lloyd - Clockmaker of Nantwich
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

John was my 5th Gt Grandfather and if possible am trying to find out more about his parents.

If you google his name and occupation it refers to Nantwich Clockmakers (particularly Kitchen and Lloyd) showing John's dates as 1761-1804.

However John married in 1765 (Cheshire Parish Database Records) to Elizabeth Turner (both shown as residents of Nantwich Parish) so the birth date of 1761 must be incorrect. Elizabeth was born 1739 in nearby Wybunbury. His death in 1804 (same database) shows does not show his age unfortunately.

I expect that he was born c1740 but would appreciate any thoughts?

John and Elizabeth had at least 7 children between 1767 and 1783 - John, Samuel, Ann, Catherine, James. Joseph, and Thomas.

Thanks for looking.

Renfrewshire / Marriage - Esther Adams Wells
« on: Tuesday 21 November 23 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Esther was born 7 January 1873 at Greenock West, Renfrewshire, the daughter of James Wells and Ellen Adams.

The censuses show she was living in England with husband Walter Adams Barefoot and records suggest they married c1894/95. Their first child was born in Oxfordshire (around 1895) and subsequently other children were born in the London area (which was also Walters place of birth).

By the 1901 census Walter was in the Navy, however, cannot find any trace of a marriage in England and wondered if they actually may have married in Scotland, before moving to England.

Any ideas?

Cambridgeshire / Looking for another Martha and her Siblings
« on: Sunday 19 November 23 08:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Not to be confused with the other thread (gratefully solved by Galium) this relates to a different  Martha Pemberton, who was born 20 March 1754 in Haddenham, a daughter of John Pemberton (1731-1758) and his wife Ann Gautrey (1729-1757).

Her parents (who married in Cottenham on 5 April 1750) had 4 children -
John - 4 July 1751
Ann - born and died 1752
Martha - 20 March 1754
Mary - 5 Jan 1756

Following the deaths of their parents, I am struggling to find them and any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Alan

Cambridgeshire / Looking for Martha
« on: Saturday 18 November 23 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find out what happened to Martha Pemberton who married John Feast on 21 June 1773 at Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, She was the only daughter of William Pemberton (1705-1782) and Katherine Gautrey (1713-1774), and was born 22 Feb 1753 also at Cottenham, I believe her husband John Feast was from Streetham, Cambridgeshire according to the marriage listings.

John and Martha had one son, William Pemberton Feast  born at Cottenham in 1776, I think he married Sarah Flaxon at Cambridge in 1797 and died there in 1822.

The missing part of my puzzle is obtaining any detailed information regarding Martha and her husband John.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Canada / Harriet Jane Gautrey and Family
« on: Friday 25 August 23 09:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am at a loss in tracing this lady.

Her parents were Nathan Gautrey (died 1922 in Sherbrooke, Quebec) and Sarah Maskell (died Sherbrooke 1914) who had emigrated to Quebec Canada around 1873 with the rest of the family.

Last seen in the 1881 census at Sherbrooke, Quebec (transcribed as Jane Gautry age 20). She was born in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, England in 1861 and baptised there in 1868.

I am also trying to find her sister Hannah Gautrey who was born in Quebec in 1877 and was last seen in the 1881 census (transcribed as Hanah).

My other "brick wall" was her brother Jonas who was born in 1870 but I found his death in the Drouin records in August 1878.

Can you find any information on either Harriet Jane or Hannah?

Many thanks

Europe / Finding a Marriage in Boulogne Sur Mer, France
« on: Wednesday 24 May 23 10:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Sidney Nicholl was born in St Clements Dane London 1873 and was resident in England with his wife Josephine Albertina Nicholl. They both died in Sussex, Sidney in 1971, Josephine a few years earlier in 1959.

She was born in Boulogne sur Mer, around 1873 but I cannot find her maiden name nor details of their French marriage in 1906.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Charles Alfred Nicholl - School of Military Engineering
« on: Saturday 20 May 23 07:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Charles was born Sept Qtr 1862 at Strand, London and can be seen aged 9 in 1871 census with his parents Robert, Kate and various siblings at Portugal Street, Westminster, London. By 1881 he is in Gillingham, Kent, age now showing as 21, unmarried with the Royal School of Engineering, Brompton Barracks, as a driver.

Presumably he was with the Royal Artillery but I cannot find any further trace of him.

Any ideas?

Sussex / Elizabeth Charlotte Wincham Watson - born 1853 Westtham
« on: Sunday 08 January 23 07:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

It appears that Elizabeth was baptised on 3 April 1853 at Westham, the daughter of Elizabeth Watson and the only reference i can see of her after this date is in the 1861 census. living with her grandparents John (age 56) and Charlotte Watson (age 57). aged 8 (with her name showing as Charlotte).

Her mother Elizabeth Ann Watson went on to marry John Taylor in Jan 1863 at Brighton but I cannot find anything else for her daughter Elizabeth Charlotte Wincham Watson.

(One of John and Charlottes sons (Edwin) emigrated to USA - but don't know if this helps this  search or not)

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / What happened to John Shaddick
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 08:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

John was baptised 17 Feb 1841 at St Philip, Clerkenwell, London to Thomas and Margaret Shaddick. He was one of 10 children.

The last census I can find him on is in 1861 age 20 a musician serving on the Royal Navy vessel Racer  at Colon, New Granada, Central America - nothing afterwards.

The vessel was under the command of Commodore Algernon Lyons and in 1860 they were on the North America and West Indies Station, with the task of protecting British Merchant Vessels seeking to avoid the blockade being imposed by United State Navy on Confederate Ports.

Is it possible to find out what happened next? Did John die at sea?
