New Zealand Completed Requests / Where to from here?
« on: Tuesday 29 January 13 07:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

my paternal great grandma is turning out to have had a colourful past.
She had a baby girl in 1910 at the age of 15 (and this girl disappeared from trace - I haven't found her, but the rumour is that she went to Australia). Then (or so I had thought) she had a boy, my grandfather in 1916. Both children were born out of wedlock, and the NZ birth printouts give the ever helpful 'NR' in the "Father" details. Both were given her surname (Southee).
I then find yet another birth for my great grandma, which was registered in 1912.
So, off I go, and order the birth printout for this baby. I was very disappointed today, when I was emailed the printout, full of 'NR's and not much else. I worked out the date of birth myself (10 Feb 1912), and the only new information that this printout gave me was that the baby was a male, born in Upper Hutt, and that the informant was the baby's maternal grandmother.

After some to-ing and fro-ing with a woman at the ISBDM Issuance Team, and asking why some printouts were photocopies of handwritten records, whereas others (like the one I got today) were computer printouts with little information... she said this:

Quote
We are unable to issue this printout in the handwritten format.  Legislation has been passed since the event was registered that deleted certain information collected at the time of the registration.  This means the record must be updated into the typed format with the deleted information removed.

It is understandable that you may like to know what was deleted, however it is not possible for us to advise you of this.  The effect of the legislation is that certain information must be treated as though it was never registered, so it would be contrary to that intention to distribute the information.

The typed printout contains all of the information from the original record other than that deleted by legislation.

I hope this explains the situation clearly.

Okay, okay.... it's frustrating, even with this explanation. This male born in 1912 has probably passed away like his brother, my grandfather, has... and the mother is long-gone - no people are left to offend or distress with the truth. Why the secrecy? All I am doing is researching my family tree.

Where to from here? How do I go about trying to find out the first name of the baby? The baby would have been adopted out, or perhaps died, because my grandfather had no idea about his mother giving birth to a boy four years earlier. Is it possible to find out if the baby was adopted, and trace them?

Many thanks
Rachel

Cambridgeshire / MORRIS burials
« on: Sunday 30 September 12 05:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to track down the burial (and possible headstone information) of

Archibald Patterson Morris, born 16 Nov 1903 in Wetherby, Yorkshire, died 1987 (possibly February) in Peterborough.
His wife was Martha Mary Morris (nee EDWARDS), born 25 Dec 1915 in Clwyd, died 9 Mar 1994 at the District Hospital, Peterborough. Martha was living at 6 Manor Close, Wittering, Peterborough, at the time of her death.

A daughter is possibly buried with them:
Shirley Irene LEETON, born 5 Aug 1936, died May 1993 in Peterborough, age 56.

Can anybody please help me?

Many thanks,
Rachel, Wellington, N.Z.

Flintshire / "N.B." in burials register
« on: Saturday 17 March 12 06:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have a quick question... I have been looking up some of my GUEST ancestors in the Flintshire burials register (for Hope Parish), and see that the curate (Robert Roberts!) has written "N.B." at the end of the row for some of the entries. What does this mean?
Sorry if I'm asking a silly question

Regards
Rachel

Australia / NSW Electoral Roll for circa 1911?
« on: Friday 01 July 11 00:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm trying to trace a William MILLS (b abt 1859 in Suffolk, Eng; came to Auckland, NZ on "Claramont" in 1863; emigrated to NSW, Australia by 1911).
William is the informant on his brother's (Claremont Vincent Mills) death certificate of 2 Aug 1911, and is living at 139 Bedford Street, Newtown, NSW.
Unfortunately the Aus electoral rolls on the Ancestry website only go from 1930 for NSW. Does anyone out there have access to hardcopies and would please be able to assist me?
I'd love to find out who he married, whether he had children, what his occupation was and so forth.

Many thanks
Rachel

Durham / HICKSON of Sunderland, Durham
« on: Thursday 02 June 11 02:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm trying to find out more about Henry Hickson, born abt 1803, in Sunderland, Durham. He married Maria DOUGLAS in Grimsby, Linc, and moved to Yorkshire where he worked as a Tanner.
Are there any parish registers available for Sunderland that could have Henry's baptism in it, and give his parents names and possible siblings?

Many thanks
Rachel

Hello
I'm helping a friend to research a family member, Francis James "Frank" RUSSELL. Apparently he was born in Wellington about 1857.... but neither my friend nor myself can find him on the birth index... why? His marriage certificate says his parents were Richard Russell and Elizabeth Smith.
Francis died in Wanganui on the 6th of October 1917. His wife (Fanny Elizabeth nee HOLLAND) died years earlier in Levin on the 17th of September 1899 of Enteritis. She was from Nova Scotia. They are both buried side by side in The Tiro Tiro Rd Cemetery in Levin.

Could somebody out there please help us find Francis/Frank on the birth index?

Thanks so much!!

Sussex Lookup Requests / Buxted Parish Records lookup please
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello

please would someone who has access to the parish records for Buxted see if they can find out any further information for me on these two brothers?

I have a Samuel Watford, born about 1825 in Buxted, and his brother John Watford (later changed his surname to WHATFORD) born about 1828 in Buxted. I do not know their parents names, and wonder if they had any siblings.

Samuel and John are together on an 1841 census, at Cottage On Railroad, Keymer, Cuckfield Union, Sussex, England, working as agricultural labourers.

Samuel later married a widow named Charlotte DAY (in 1880) - I'm not sure if he was previously married. John married Mary Ann BECK in 1853, and became a Baptist Minister.

Many thanks

Hello
I'm trying to find a marriage between a Robert ESCREET and a Mary (surname unknown). Robert was born about 1795 in Ellerker (and died 20 May 1862 in Ellerker), and Mary was born abt 1798 in Wawne.
They had children:
Sarah (b abt 1822), Dinah (b abt 1830), Fanny (b abt 1833), Thomas (b 1836 in Ellerker), Mary (b 1838 in Ellerker), Robert (twin to Mary, b 1838 in Ellerker), George (b 1839 in Ellerker). Five of these seven children were christened in Brantingham. I wonder if Robert and Mary married there, too?
They could have had more children inbetween Sarah and Dinah, but I cannot find any on the censuses or the IGI christening records.
On the 1841 census, Robert Escreet is a labourer in Ellerker (and he is with Ann, who could be his sister). In 1851, Robert is an agricultural labourer in Ellerker, and on the 1861 census he's a farmer at 'Cottage, Ellerker'. His wife Mary died not long after, in June quarter, 1861 ('Mary Escritt' on the death index).
I'd love to find out Robert's wife's name (Mary), and also the names of Robert's parents.

Many thanks
Rachel

London and Middlesex / Chenoweths in Middlesex?
« on: Monday 15 March 10 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'm on the hunt for an 1841 census with my Chenoweths on it.
Richard Chenoweth, tailor, married Ann WATSON on 1 May 1820 at St George, Hanover Square.
They had a son named William Watson Chenoweth, who was baptised on 11 Jun 1821 at the same church. At the time they were living in Bloomsbury. They also had a daughter, Jane Watson Chenoweth, born about 1825 in Marylebone (her place and year of birth is taken from an 1851 census where she is with her husband Charles Howard, age 28, Beer Seller, b Lilley). However, there's a baptism record that says she was baptised on 17th June 1840 at St John At Hampstead, Camden, Middlesex - the place of abode was Hampstead. For both of these baptisms, the parents were written as Richard and Ann Chenoweth, occupation of Richard: Tailor.
They possibly had other children, including Charles and Frances.

I cannot find Richard and/or Ann on any 1841 census, even in Hampstead (where Jane was baptised the year before).

Jane married Charles Howard on 18 May 1854 at All Souls, Saint Marylebone, London - after having four of their eight children (a bit unusual). On her marriage certificate, it says Richard was desceased.

Many thanks
Rachel
