The Common Room / HMS Collingwood Bombing Memorial Service

H.M.S.Collingwood bombing 1943

Memorial Remembrance Service H.M.S.Collingwood bombing 1943

I am looking for relatives of the 33 men who were killed on June 18th 1943 when a bomb dropped on H.M.S.Collingwood. Most were 17 and 18 year olds and 'volunteers'. On their service record the explanation "To serve for the duration of the present conflict" would have meant that at the end of the war they would have been released. They were only a couple of weeks into their training. 33 were killed and 38 injured. One of those injured was later killed in another instance on 22 December 1943, still only 17.

In conjunction with the Executive Officer and the Public Relations Officer of H.M.S.Collingwood, I have arranged a Memorial Service in the H.M.S.Collingwood Chapel and a visit to where the bomb dropped, where there will be another short service. Wreaths and Poppies will then be laid at a tree planted to commemorate the 50th anniversary.

If you know about this and know a relative or someone who served there, please let me know. The 70th Anniversary on June 18th this year is rapidly approaching. Brothers and sisters will be in their 80's and 90's, (I have two already). Sons and Daughters, Nephews and Nieces all wanted.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Brighten the Guides
« on: Monday 19 September 11 15:27 BST (UK)  »
PLease could someone kindly help with this photo which I want to put in a local magazine. It needs to be lighter, but so that the sharpness is not lost; it's too dark to print as it is. I scanned it at 300 dpi in colour. Can it be improved?
Thanks very much.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Is it Fane?

Do you agree that this (first) name is Fane? First letter is definitely a capital F, he always does them like that.

The Common Room / What's a Reckler?
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 19:37 BST (UK)  »

I'm transcribing PRs from the 1700s. At that time there were several men with the same name, so the vicar distinguished between them by occupation or abode. In 1712 I have a Thomas Hall, 'Reckler'. It's not a placename, so it may well be an occupation. But what on earth is a Reckler? Answers on a postcard, please....... No, seriously, any idea what it is? I have ruled it out as a name as this vicar never puts middle names (not many people had one) unless, very rarely, it was the name of a baby he was baptising.

Would be grateful for any help. Thanks.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What'sisname?
« on: Tuesday 07 June 11 16:14 BST (UK)  »
After merrily transcribing a vicar's handwriting for years, he has either died (I shall know that when I get to 'Burials') or been taken ill, and someone else is doing the PR. His writing is not bad but in the bit I am doing some of the entries are rather faint.
Please, can someone read this surname? The first letter is 'P'. I will post two images; the second has the colours inverted to see if that helps. Thanks.

The Common Room / But what did he die of?
« on: Monday 09 August 10 18:53 BST (UK)  »

On a recent walking tour of Oundle, one of our guides was talking about non-Plague deaths during the Plague year. Two people had the Cause of Death noted as 'Teeth' (bleeding after multiple extractions, perhaps?) but in one case the cause of death was given as 'Tempeny' (spelt like that).
What on earth was Tempeny??? Cannot find it anywhere! The guide I spoke to is keenly interested in the history of the town, and quite knowledgeable. Unfortunately I haven't seen the entry myself. It is just possible that it was either a corruption of another word, or someone has mistranscribed it. Any ideas?

Northamptonshire / Good news about Kettering PRs
« on: Friday 30 July 10 13:57 BST (UK)  »

After retaining their PRs for so long, Kettering Parish Church (St Peter and St Paul) have deposited them with the NRO. They have now been microfilmed and are available to purchase on fiche in the usual way.
FreeREG are negotiating for permission to transcribe them.

Technical Help / JavaScript
« on: Sunday 18 July 10 21:05 BST (UK)  »
I want to ask about something that's been bothering me. I was having difficulty (understatement) accessing the Ch5 version of iPlayer. Their online help said go to 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > Advanced,  and make sure that Javascript was enabled. This I did, but there was no mention of Javascript in the list.
I have got 'Java', and it updates itself, but does that mean I don't have Javascript? Any suggestions ? Answers in easy words please, as "I am a bear of very little brain and long (technical) words bother me", as Pooh said.
Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Another PR puzzle
« on: Monday 17 May 10 22:04 BST (UK)  »
After the prompt help I had with my last request, can you lovely people help with this one. The child is illegitimate; 'supposed father J Curtis', followed by a note 'a bastard', but can anyone read what it says above that? Thanks.
