Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Mossman birth Kingston c. 1859
« on: Sunday 25 May 08 04:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi fellow Rootschatters,

I'm in New Zealand and even though I have tried some of your wonderful links to Canadian online resources, I haven't had any luck with the following...

My husband's paternal g.grandparent's marriage certificate has his g.grandmother, Mary Esther MOSSMAN's place of birth as Kingston, Canada.  They were married in Waipawa, New Zealand in 1880, with her age as 21, which would have her birth around 1859?  Her parents are listed as Thomas MOSSMAN and Eleanor WILWORTH (I think it might actually be meant to be DILWORTH).

I currently have no idea when, or how, they came to New Zealand, but help with Mary's birth would be so much appreciated and would give me something to work on.

Thanks heaps from a hopeful Kiwi,
Abby

New Zealand Completed Requests / Bluff 1872/73
« on: Monday 05 February 07 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
The Zealandia arrived in Bluff very late December 1872, unloaded some passengers and then went on to Dunedin early January '73.

My problem is the passenger list for this sailing of Zealandia only gives those who disembarked in Dunedin and the newspaper of the time seems to give only very general information without names.  I am hoping someone may know somewhere in Bluff or Invercargill that we might find a list of those who got off in Bluff?

I would love to be able to confirm my g.g.grandfather's arrival and help would be very greatly appreciated.

Hoping,
Abby

The Common Room / Ebsworthy - any clues please
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 12:27 BST (UK)  »
My mother had Ebsworthy as her middle name.  She was told it was a family name but was never told which branch.  I am hoping it will pop up as I delve further, but in the mean time wondered, because its not a common name, whether anyone could give me an idea of which area it may have come from.

Many thanks,
Abby

Shropshire / Re: Shropshire bands 1860s
« on: Monday 28 August 06 22:06 BST (UK)  »
I have just found out my g.grandfather belonged to the St, Aulkmonds' Temperance Band, the first Shropshire Artillery Band and the band of the 7th Shropshire Rifles somewhere between 1864 and 1872.

Would someone be able to point me in the direction of some information about these bands at that time please?  I know its a 'big ask', but somehow this site seems to suggest that sometimes what might seem impossible just might be possible after all!!

Many thanks,
Abby

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / EVANS, Bedminster - maiden name
« on: Monday 28 August 06 03:13 BST (UK)  »
I have just received a copy of Francis Joseph Evans birth certificate (my g.grandfather).  His birth date is 8 May 1842 and his father's occupation given as yeoman.

His parents are listed as Joseph Evans and Ann Evans (formerly Sprod(?)).  Could someone please confirm this as a possible surname or am I reading it wrongly?  Ann registered his birth and gave her address as (looks like) Parton's (Parson's) Street, Bedminster.

Many thanks,
Abby

Somerset Completed Lookup Requests / EVANS, Bedminster
« on: Sunday 13 August 06 10:35 BST (UK)  »
Mr G-grandfather, Francis Joseph Evans married G-grandma, Mary Ann Smith in Bedminster, 12 Febrary 1872, 8 days before they started their trip to NZ on the Bulwark.

I have just received a copy of their marriage certificate, which shows Francis Joseph Evans information as 29, plumber (journeyman), Coalpit Lane, Bedminster, Father - Jospeh Evans (farmer).

Mary Ann Smith information as 25, spinster, Hengaston, Bedminster, Father - Henry (or Harry?) George Smith, Gardener (master).

Would anyone have any way of finding information about either family please or suggestions about where to go from here?

Many thanks,
Abby

Warwickshire / Elizabeth Green
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 07:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone may know something about my g. grandmother, Elizabeth Green, who left England in 1873 and arrived in New Zealand in 1874.  She died in NZ in 1915 and her death certificate shows her birthplace as Wormleighton, Warwickshire, although family members thought she had come from Leamington.

I have no other starting points for her at all as she travelled out alone on the 'Dunfillan', although another passenger, Elizabeth Brindley, was a witness to her marriage to Richard William Jones.

Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks, Abby

Shropshire / JONES Richard William, Much Wenlock
« on: Sunday 16 July 06 06:38 BST (UK)  »
My g. grandfather, Richard William Jones was born Sept 1846 in Much Wenlock, supposedly the first of 8 children to John and Margaret Jones.

He came to New Zealand around 1872.  As yet I haven't been able to find him on any passenger lists - he was an engineer so he may have worked his passage?  He married my g. grandmother, Elizabeth Green in New Zealand in 1874.  I have obtained a copy of their marriage certificate and find that he was married before, as he is listed as a widower.  I thought I had found the right one online and sent away for that marriage cert., but it is wrong, so I now have surplus one for R.W. Jones and Sophia Williams if it is of use to anyone.

My question main question is - where do I go now to find who he may have married?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Abby
