Europe / Russian Jewish Immigants
« on: Monday 09 August 10 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Maybe someone could offer me advice please.  I am researching for my auntie, who is 85 and has now lost most of her sight. She researched her whole family in the old-fashioned way before computers, but got stuck on the Russian Jewish immigrants, and before she could get any further she lost her sight. Anyway, there was a whole family of them surname HARRIS who we think arrived at Kingston upon Hull around 1877. They were all born in Russia: Bernard, Hannah, Ellen, Annie,Jacob, Lazarus, Lewis, Pollie, Samuel, and Sarah. Ellen married someone called Ellis, but we have never traced him. Birthplaces Senokosnyy. Auntie would be happy if she could at least find the port and year of entry. Thanks everyone.

Glamorganshire / Thomas Walters
« on: Friday 31 October 08 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Does this ring any bells with anybody? We have found a plaque in a garden in deepest Lincolnshire, being used as a bucket stand! It could have arrived there with a load of stone, or slate etc. Probably has nothing to do with Lincs, but the dates tie in with a TW from Merthyr.

It reads: "Erected to the memory of Thomas Walters, whose life was devoted to the interest of this Church, Sunday School, and CE (?)  Born June 2nd 1886, died Dec 9th 1946."

The owner of the garden feels she would like to know if anyone would like it back.

Cheers, Margo

Australia / Emigration to Australia
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 12:56 GMT (UK)  »
I'm a complete beginner to the Australian emigration business, and don't know where to look. We are searching for a Lucy Bywater from Beeston Nottingham, who was one of 3 sisters who went overseas in the early 1900s to teach/help with lacemaking etc. The first 2 went to USA and we have found some of their details, and think they came back, but we think Lucy went to Australia and stayed.
Any help/tips gratefully received. Thanks, Margaret.

Nottinghamshire / Lacemakers to USA
« on: Friday 03 November 06 16:57 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about lacemakers going over to the USA to teach them about the job? Name I am looking for is Bywater, possibly 3 sisters and a male cousin. Date 1920s I think.
Cheers, Margaret.

Nottinghamshire / Mounteney
« on: Thursday 03 August 06 17:42 BST (UK)  »
I've looked and looked for this half-brother and sister in the 1891 census, but no luck at all. There are so many spelling and abbreviation combinations that I don't think I shall ever find them:

Florence Lydia Mounteney   born 1875  Nottingham
George Edward Robert Mounteney  born 1890 Nottinghamshire (Gedling)

They could be in London with relations, or maybe anywhere I'm thinking now!

Thanks for any help.
