Cornwall Lookup Requests / HICKES mystery mid 1800's
« on: Monday 08 October 07 02:41 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me please.  I am looking for information on Frank and Weston Hickes, this is what I have to date.
In the 1851 census it shows Thomas Hickes 46 Surveyor of Roads and County Bridges, wife Grace (nee Blee) 39. Thomas James 11, Edward 10 (my g-grandgather), Frank 8 and Weston 6 all living at 16 Prospect Place, Truro, Cornwall.
In 1857 Grace dies, so her sons would be Thomas 17, Edward 16, Frank 14 and Weston 12 at the time of her death.  By the 1861 census, Thomas Snr has remarried to widower Emma Blee (nee Osler) living at 7 Prospect Place (why would they move across the street ?) with Thomas James now 21 and assistant to his father as a surveyor and Edward 20 a Seaman.  I can find no other record of Frank or Weston except for Weston's death in 1864 aged 19.  Clearly he is still alive during the 1861 census, but I'm at a loss as to where to find him.
Does anyone know of the protocol for boys aged 12 and 14 at the time of their mother's death?  Would they have been sent to boarding school and if so, are there records available for this, or would they have been sent to another member of the family?  I would imagine that if they were with another member of the family it would still show up in a census record, but I can not find anything.  If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.
Many thanks Kath

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Hickes, Henry - Berkeley lookup
« on: Saturday 17 February 07 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am looking for information on Henry Hickes bapt 7 May 1751 at Berkeley, son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Hickes, brother to Thomas, Sarah, Anne, Fanny, John and George Hickes.  I have burial dates for other members of the family but cannot find anything on Henry.

I am a decendant of Thomas, but I'm also try to find a connection between my family and the Candian Hickes whose ancestor was Henry William Hickes born Paddinton 1833 and married in Bristol 1858 to Harriet Weaver.  He was the son of Henry Hickes - Physican but I can't find anything on this Henry either, I thought perhaps my Henry might be grandfather to Henry William.

If anyone is able to shed some light on any of the Henrys I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks Kath

Gloucestershire Completed Lookup Requests / Hickes from Stone lookup
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 10:29 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the parents of Thomas Hickes (my g-g-g-g-grandfather) married to Susannah Elizabeth Hupsman on 19 Dec 1786.
Thomas and Suzannah had 10 children:
Frederick bapt 19 Dec 1787 @ Stone
Augustus Thomas bapt 6 Aug 1789 "
Harriet bapt 29 Jul 1790 "
Suzannah Elizabeth bapt 22 Mar 1792 "
Baptist William bapt 16 Aug 1793 "
Henry bapt 27 Aug 1795 "
John Cox bapt 24 Sept 1797 "
Caroline bapt 3 Jul 1801 "
Thomas bapt 9 Nov 1802 "
and Thomas bapt 26 Feb 1806

My g-g-g-grandfather was the youngest (Thomas) and although I have not found a death cert I assume Thomas (1802) died in infancy.  To make the search even harder there seems to be another family of Hickes from Gloustershire who bears the name of Thomas (also 1806) who became a Surgeon and whose father was also Thomas.  My Thomas became the Surveyor of Roads and County Bridges in Cornwall.

If anyone is able to help me on this I would greatly appreciate it

Cornwall Lookup Requests / History of homes in Cornwall - look up request
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 07:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if there is a website that gives the history of homes in the Cornwall area.  My g-g-grandfather Edward Hickes lived at 16 Prospect Place in Truro in the 1851 Census, along with his brothers Thomas James, Frank and Weston and his parents Thomas (Surveyor of roads and county bridges) and Grace Cox Hickes nee Blee.  By the 1861, Grace had died (1857) and Thomas had remarried to Emma Blee nee Osler, they were now living in 7 Prospect Place, Truro and there is no mention of Frank or Weston nor can I find any other reference to these boys again.  I am wondering if there may have been a fire at their 1st address or perhaps there was an epedemic of some kind during these days as it seems strange that they would live in the same street - could the street numbers have been changed for some reason?  Thomas retired to Elm Cottage on Truro - Vean - Road and spent out the rest of his days here some 20 yrs, the property then was occupied by his son Thomas James and his family.  I wonder if any of these properties still exist?
If anyone can enlighten me on this mystery I would very much appreciate it as I'm doing research from Australia.

Kath

To add to the mystery, I have just found the family listed in the 1841 Cencus as Hicks living at No 7...so they have gone from no 7 to 16 and back again to 7???
