Galway / Help needed with death record on irishgenealogy
« on: Saturday 10 February 24 12:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Think this is a first for me but the death record appears to be written in Gaelic? (sorry if I have that wrong) and I can't read it!

Charles O'Hara Trench died 29 May 1927 at Confert Eyrecourt co Galway (got that from Edinburgh Probate)  RD Ballinasloe
can anyone tell me the cause of death please and also the informant appears to be M A Trench, is a relationship noted?

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Find My Past Newspaper search changing
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 07:46 GMT (UK)  »
I had a quick look this morning… or I should say tried to have a quick look at the newspaper archives on FindMyPast!
They appear to be tinkering with it again and taking you initially to
Birth announcements
Death announcements
Marriage announcements

Then hidden lower down a link to newspapers >:(. Still wouldn’t search though.

Clearly the techies they have hired do not understand that we also look for articles other than announcements!

Anyone else notice the glitch?

The Common Room / Has anybody else noticed a link between Ancestry and Trove (Australia)
« on: Saturday 16 September 23 08:34 BST (UK)  »
I have just been searching for a marriage on Trove. I found an engagement announcement first, so  I noted it in Ancestry  under the man's name before I carried on searching for the wedding.

I noted The Inverell times and newspaper date in the description field.

I then found the marriage notice, went back to Ancestry and found it had automatically updated the engagement notice to include the bride's name and added a marriage date! (year only but it was correct!)  I already had a wife for the man, but this could have been a different wife.

I should add engagement was 1946 and the marriage was 1947

Sorry if this has already been discussed

Nottinghamshire / Ada Holme or should that be Margery or Margaret?
« on: Thursday 31 August 23 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I've been tearing my hair out this morning, trying to work out exactly who Marcus Arthur Holme married!

Marcus was born 14 Sep 1881 in Wellingborough, Northants

Mar 1920 he married Ada Allcroft in Leeds
son Roy Allcroft Holme was born abt Jan 1921  Shrewsbury (died 28 July 1934)

1921 census Marcus, MARGERY and Roy Holme are living in St Chad Shropshire
Margery and son Roy are both listed as being born Shewsbury

they had 5 more children by 1939 all with the mothers maiden name Allcroft

1939 register Marcus, Margery (born 9 Aug 1898), son William and 4 others are living at 18 Buttivant Street Nottingham

Marcus died 16 Mar 1960 he is buried in the Carlton Cemetery Nottingham in the same plot as son Roy Allcroft Holme and MARGARET HOLME!  (Findagrave)

Margaret died 1 Aug 1956 aged 56

other than the marriage record, 1921 and 1939 I cannot find anything for Ada/Margery/Margaret Allcroft! That is if they are all the same woman. I cannot find a birth or death record for her.

Any suggestions welcome

Thanks in advance
Jenny

Technical Help / Ancestry check out cart
« on: Wednesday 26 July 23 14:53 BST (UK)  »
I have a year worldwide Ancestry subscription which is not due to expire until early 2024.

Today I noticed I had something added to my checkout cart (top right hand of the screen).
I have also had an email asking me “if I had forgotten something?”

That something is a years subscription at the discounted rate we got at the beginning of the year… obviously, this must be an error.

Has anyone else noticed anything odd?

Somerset / Looking for Minnie
« on: Tuesday 18 July 23 10:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Minnie Cook has been a long standing brick wall for me, therefore, she was the first digital birth record I downloaded from the GRO last week, well I had to try the new process out  ;D

Lovely as the record is, I'm no further forward looking for Minnie.

Some background info.
Minnie Cook born 9 Aug 1889 in Axbridge
Parents Thomas William Cook and Francis nee Peckham
sister Emily Francis Cook 1886-1937 (my great grandmother)

1891 -  RG12/1963 Bristol St James ED 3 folio 39 page 2
5 Barton St St James Bristol

1901 - RG13/2405 Ed 18 folio14 page 19  Barton Regis, Westbury on Trym
3 Wellington Cres, Horfield, Gloucestershire

her father dies in 1905 and her mother marries Richard Pugh in  Maesteg Glam  Jun qtr 1910
sister Emily married Frederick Charles Howell in 1903 Barton Regis Registry Office

Minnie is not with either of them in 1911.

I "think" this is her in 1911 at 11 Henleaze Ave Westbury on Trym Bristol
Minnie Cook 23 general domestic servant born Weston Super Mare?
(living with the SERFICANT family
RG14/15095 RD 319 SD 9 ED 3

I should note that her sister Emily and her family were living in Westbury on Trym until abt 1908

I haven't been able to pinpoint a marriage or find her in 1921 or 1939.
I have checked several Minnies with the same birth date in 1939 but tracing back they don't appear to be her.

My dad recalled the name Min being mentioned but knew absolutely nothing about her, he was only 11/12 when Minnie's sister Emily passed away.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you for reading...
Jenny

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry DNA playing up?
« on: Monday 26 September 22 08:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Is anyone else having problems with Ancestry DNA matches?
mine are cutting off very early at 30cMs, I then click on distant and select distant and I can't get below 20 although I have matched previously to some as low as 9.

I am specifically looking for a couple of members that I know match for sure but they are distant. One, I saw the name previously in the match list but now its gone and they confirm matches all the way back to the connecting ancestor  and the other hasn't appeared at all and he matches with YDNA perfectly at 5th cousin level and he isn't there either!

I hadn't downloaded the raw data for other databases as I wanted to get the most out of Ancestry first, so this morning I tried downloading the raw data. First it didn't recognise the password 3 times! then I finally got passed that and it told me it had sent an email but it hasn't!!

I should say both of these contacts have downloaded to gedcom and MyHeritage.
