Wexford / Fitzhenry's of Wexford (New Ross?)
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

It's a while since I posted any messages but I was wondering if anybody has any information on the Fitzhenry family from New Ross.
My Great Grandmother was Ellen Fitzhenry, born about 1845 who I thought was from Waterford and her father's name was Thomas.  It has now come to light that she was more likely to have been born in Wexford and her father may have been a Martin Fitzhenry married to a Sarah McNamara.  Hope somebody can help.

Thanks

World War One / Death of a Soldier (Power from Waterford)
« on: Monday 21 March 05 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am not researching the Power name, however I have recently had a Newspaper article transcribed regarding my own Hamilton family, on the same page was an article referring to the death of a Waterford soldier,  the article was written in May 1917 and was taken from "The Waterford News" it may be important to somebody who is researching their family so I have transcribed it below.

HOW A WATERFORD SOLDIER DIED.

The following letter has been received by Mrs. James Power, 48 John Street Waterford:- 2nd Leinsters, B.E.F. France May 21st 1917

Dear Mrs Power- Your letter has only just reached me owing to some insufficiency of address.  The sad news of your son's death is only too true.  I buried him with two of his companions.  I was not with him when he died.  Himself and three others were killed together by a shell which burst just beside them.  From what I could see death was instantaneous.  Regarding his spiritual affairs you need be under no uneasiness as all the men who went into action on that occasion were at confession and Holy Communion two or three times just before the action.  I think God will be good to all those who fell.  They died doing their duty in the cause of freedom and Justice.  The Commanding Officer, Colonel Murphy, and his company officers desire me to say how deeply they sympathise with you in your loss:-
Yours faithfully in Jesus Christ,

J.P. MOLONEY, Chaplain.

I hope this connects with somebody's ancestry, I have also posted this to the Waterford board.

Regards

Hi all,

Don't know if anybody is interested but there is a Hamilton Family Bible for sale on ebay, I've taken a look in the remote hope that there could be some connection to my family but there is not.  I would hate to think it may be of interest to someone and they miss it.  The item number is 6945243458.

The Common Room / Can anyone help with these 2 questions please
« on: Saturday 30 October 04 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Question 1

Last year I searched the Irish BDM's to find my Grandfathers birth ref.  I had his baptism certificate and knew he was born in Dec 1898.  I found the ref and ordered the certificate from Dublin, however I received notification that it could not be found.  I have recently had the chance to search the indexs again and thinking I had made a mistake I re-checked the ref but I had been correct the first time.  My daughter has been in Dublin this last week and called into the records office to try to obtain the certificate.  This time she was told they had found the entry but it had been cancelled, there were no notes written in the register to explain why.
Could anybody tell me why this would happen?.

Question 2

I have just searched the 1911 Census return for Emmetts Place in Waterford City.  At the beginning where all the buildings are listed and all the Heads of Household I could clearly see my Grandfather William Hamilton's name.  However when I looked at the actual return for his house number, William was not listed at all but his wife Mary was stated as Head of Household.  Could anybody explain why his name was in the first list but not on the actual return?.

« on: Saturday 02 October 04 15:16 BST (UK)  »
Whilst searching the GENUKI site I found some of my family on the 1851 Census for Painswick, Gloucestershire.  It reads:

COOK Edwin 45 Sawyer BB
Matilda 42 Clother Worker Picker BB

Could anybody tell me what the "BB" means?

Thanks

United States of America / Fanny Smith, New York to Liverpool
« on: Saturday 11 September 04 21:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am searching for a birth record of Fanny Smith, I know she was born in New York about 1852, she married in Liverpool in 1849.  On the 1891 Census she is listed as "British Subject".  Would anybody know where I could see ships passenger lists coming from New York to Liverpool.  How did a person become a British Subject, would there be any records of this event.
I hope somebody can point me in the right direction.

Wales / Charles Hamilton married to Cissy.
« on: Sunday 22 August 04 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me trying to find to find any info on a Charles Hamilton, he was born in Waterford Ireland but settled in Wales.   I know his wife was named Cissy or Cecelia.  They had children some of whom where Nelly, Josie and Stewart, Nelly may have married a Thornhill.
The only clue I have is a picture taken of the family at a studio in Swansea, on the bottom of the photo is H. A. Chapman.   Any help anyone can give with this would be appreciated.
