New Zealand / Duncan MACKAY 1864-??
« on: Tuesday 17 June 25 09:06 BST (UK)  »
Duncan was born c1864, being aged 26 in his Intention to marry Annie Alicia RICHARDS in 1891. They were married in Feilding on 20 Jan 1891.

Can find them in electoral rolls together in Rangitikei, Wellington, Masterton and Dannevirke up to 1911. In 1914 I think Annie is in Te Kuiti, no sign of Duncan. They divorced in 1917. Annie is still in Te Kuiti in 1919.

Had four children
Frederick Duncan 1891-1952
Flora 1893-1940
Bernice Alicia 1895-1963
Agnes Rititi 1897-1982

Annie went on to marry Joseph Christopher SPINLEY in Auckland in 1919, and died in Auckland in 1936.

Duncan was a blacksmith. He was adjudged bankrupt in 1893-96.

Not looking for anything further on Annie or the children, but hoping someone can assist in finding what happened to Duncan.

Thanks

New Zealand / Ruth WALKER 1855-1929
« on: Thursday 12 June 25 04:27 BST (UK)  »
Ruth WALKER arrived in NZ about 1863 with her mother, not sure where or if there were any other family. Nothing really showing up anywhere apart from her obituary in 1929.

In 1879 she married Henry RICHARDSON in Nelson. They later moved to Bunnythorpe in the Manawatu where he was Postmaster. Her and Henry had five children, although she did have a son before marriage in 1877, Herbert James WALKER, who later took the surname RICHARDSON.

Trying to find her mother's name and where she was born, presumably England.

Anyone come across this lady anywhere.

Thanks

Sussex / Mercy TICEHURST 1850-??
« on: Saturday 31 May 25 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Mercy TICEHURST was the daughter of Herbert Stretton TICEHURST and Mary Ann PACKHAM. She was born Eastbourne 1850.

She is in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census with her parents in Eastbourne. After that she seems to disappear. Can't find her on the census or anywhere else.

Can anyone find her please. The surname can sometimes be written as anything, but even using other variations she doesn't want to be found.

Thanks

Cork / Caroline WATSON in 1911
« on: Saturday 31 May 25 05:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone assist in finding Caroline WATSON in the 1911 census please. She was the wife of Timothy WATSON who was a pensioner in the Royal Irish Constabulary.

Caroline was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, England in 1839, daughter of Herbert and Mary TICEHURST. In the 1871 England census she is a Nurse in the household of Augustus R Warren, an Irish baronet, in St Leonards On Sea in Sussex. Could not find her in England after that so am guessing the Warrens returned to Ireland and Caroline went with them as on 1st Oct 1885 at Kilmurry Church she married Timothy WATSON, a constable in the RIC.

Can find them both in 1901 in Kilbarry. Caroline's age was given as 55 but she would have been 60.

Can find Timothy as a boarder in 1911 in Cork in the house of Thomas FitzGibbon, but no sign of Caroline anywhere.

Timothy died in Cork in 1915, and Caroline in 1934.

Sussex / W HICKS Photographer
« on: Saturday 31 May 25 04:05 BST (UK)  »
I have a couple of photographs of a man and a woman taken by a W HICKS, Photographer, Eastbourne. One has just the name and the other has an address of 4 Cornfield Place.

They are the carte-de-visite size on a thin card base, so am guessing taken in the late 1860s.

It is fairly certain who the man is but not the woman. Thought it might have been his sister, but she died in 1854 so not likely. Possibly his wife.

Looks like it was William HICKS according to the census.
1861 at Ryde, IoW, occupation Photographic Artist
1871 at Eastbourne, occupation Photographer
1881 at Eastbourne, now a Builder, his son John born IoW now the photographer. John still a photographer in 1891 and 1901.

Looks like I might have partially answered my own question, but does anyone have any further info about William and his likely addresses so we can nail down a date of when they were taken.

Thanks.

Cornwall / William UDY
« on: Monday 26 May 25 06:42 BST (UK)  »
William UDY married Ann BESWETHERICK at St Breward on 12 November 1836.

In 1841 the family are at Luxulyan, and in 1851 at Lanivet. In 1851 William is 34 and Ann is 39. Still in Lanivet in 1861 and William is 45.

There seems to be some variation on Ancestry and FamilySearch trees as to William's parentage.

Some have his parents as Hart UDY and Ann BROKENSHIRE, but their William was born in 1809 at Tervilwich and baptised at Lanlivery in 1810. All of Hart and Ann's children were born at Tervilwich and baptised at Lanlivery. I believe Hart and Ann's William might be the one who married Mary MUCHMORE at Fowey in 1839 and died at Fowey in Dec 1844 aged 35.

Others have his parents as John UDY and Sarah TRENERRY, who married at Luxulyan in 1811. Their son William was baptised at Luxulyan on 6 Jan 1816, which would fit more with the ages in the census for the William who married Ann.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

Thanks

New Zealand / Louisa Jane UDY
« on: Saturday 24 May 25 01:27 BST (UK)  »
No research or queries on this one, just having a bit of a rant.

There are two Louisa Jane UDYs with a similar birth year in the 1860s, and everyone seems to be confusing the first one with the other one which is showing up in a lot of trees on Ancestry and MyHeritage. The trees on Familysearch appear to be correct for them.

The first Louisa Jane UDY, who was the second daughter of William UDY and Maria UDY nee TICEHURST of Greytown, was born in Greytown in 1865. She lived there pretty much her entire life, and died there in 1948 as Louisa Jane UDY. She also never married. She is buried in the Greytown Cemetery with her parents. At no stage did she live in Otago or Auckland. This is my UDY line and Louisa Jane was my great-grandmother's older sister, so a lot about her is family knowledge.

The other Louisa Jane UDY was born in Cornwall in 1863 and arrived in Dunedin in November 1875 on the Alhambra from Australia with her mother. Father was already here I think. She was the daughter of William Henry UDY and Emblyn/Emmeline WILLIAMS and is definitely the Louisa Jane who married John ROWSE at Hamiltons in Central Otago in 1883. He was a passenger on the same ship as her into Dunedin. They both ended up in Auckland. This Louisa Jane died in Auckland as Louisa Jane ROWSE in 1937 aged 74, and was buried at Mangere with her husband. This particular UDY family had nothing to do with the Wairarapa ones, although they were from the same area in Cornwall. John ROWSE was also from Cornwall and probably knew the family.

Accepting too any wrong hints or just copying from other trees I suspect.

Rant over.
