Lancashire Lookup Requests / specific Elizabeth Taylor death manchester lookup please
« on: Tuesday 01 November 11 10:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Would anyone on this board be going to the register office and be able to look up some certificate details for me so i can find the correct one to order? I would very much appreciate this as i am in Australia. I have the reg. numbers.

I am looking for the death certificate of my ggrandmother who was Elizabeth Storey and who married Thomas Taylor in Manchester. She was widowed and living with her daughter Mary Jane Carroll (formerly Holroyd, nee Taylor) and her family at 2 Napier St, Ancoats in the 1911 census. (Have these transcripts and images, and Elizabeth's birth and marriage certificates. She was baptised on 13 Jan 1851.

I have narrowed it down through Findmypast UK deaths to the following 4 people (I hope) and had a look at the registration images, but would appreciate if there is any way to see the information on the certificates before ordering.

Elizabeth Taylor died Sept 1/4 1925 age 74 Vol 8D page 547 Manchester North

Elizabeth Taylor died Mar 1/4 1942 age 91 Vol 8D page 557 Manchester

Then there are 2 registered in Chorlton -
Elizabeth Taylor died Dec 1/4 1922 age 71  Chorlton vol 8C p 843
Elizabeth Taylor died Mar 1/4 1924 age 73 Chorlton Vol 8C page 993

Thank you very much.
kind regards,
Barb

Lancashire Lookup Requests / POTTS family puzzle
« on: Wednesday 26 October 11 04:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping someone will be able to help with a puzzle which has just surfaced involving our POTTS family in Manchester, Lancashire in the early 1900's. All help very greatly appreciated, cos we can't think where or what else to try.

I have just found living descendants of my mother's half sister, who she had never seen, and hence wanting to solve this puzzle now.

We (in Oz) were told that my grandmother's 2 children by her first marriage to John Victor Potts, Agnes & Tom, were brought up by her sister Florence, after John Potts died and Grandma emigrated to SA in 1913. There was regular correspondence until WW2 when all contact was lost with Florence and Agnes. Tom who was younger, was a career Serviceman in one of the UK defence forces for many years. Tom and his family were subsequently sponsored out to Australia. Mum met them.

However, my new found (yipee!!!!) cousin in England, who is Agnes's daughter, was told that her mum was brought up by the Potts family, and they had no knowledge of Agnes's brother Tom. Agnes married Edmund Kay jr in Bradford, Lancashire (have marriage cert) and had her own family.

We have the 1911 census and those before that, but have no idea where to look to find out actually what happened after 1911, and who brought up who, but are very curious to fill in the gaps. Both Tom and Agnes were mentioned in a letter to my Grandmother in 1934 from Florence, so we can't work out how Tom and Agnes could not have known about each other.  ???

HELP please!!
Thank you.

Hi again,
Sorry I inadvertently sent an earlier message re the Davies family from Manchester, Lancashire, without completing it, but don't know where it has gone, so will start with the second part, rather than duplicate the entry at this stage  :-\

Peter Davies b 1837 in Manchester Warehouseman d 1887 and his wife Isabella Ann Harrison b 1837 Leicester had the following children in Manchester. I would very much appreciate if anyone could help fill in the missing information that i have been unable to find about them.

John Edward Davies b c1860/61 occ-Warehouseman (John E in 1861, JE in 1881 census, John B in 1871) no details after 1881. What happened to him - marriage, family ??? I have conflicting information here.

Sidney Davies b c1862 Clerk/Railway Clerk (m Edith Forder) - have details to time of 1911 census - no children to this time. ? What happened to them.

Arthur William Davies b 1865 Insurance Clerk married H M ??? born c1885 Ashton on Ribble, Lancashire in about 1908 or 9 and had daughter Winifred Davies (4months) at time of 1911 census. They were living at 20 Cromwell Ave Manley Park, Chorlton reg district at the time. Would like to know his wife's name and particulars, and whether they had any further children etc.

Frederic Davies b c 1865 who was an apprentice cabinetmaker in 1881 - haven't been able to find him since then.

Clara Isabel Davies b June 1/4 1867 - no details after 1881 census

Gertrude B b 1871 - moved to Australia and married in N.S.W. in 1903 - haven't been able to find emigration records yet. Does not appear to have had any children.

Ruth Eveline Davies b dec 1872 m William James Whittock - have a little info.

If anyone can help with information on my brickwalls above, or death details for Peter's parents, John Davies b 1802 Gresford, Denbighshire and Elizabeth ? Walker b 1802 Manchester, Lancashire, who both died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses in Manchester (living Wood St Manchester 1851 census), i would be very grateful. Also if anyone can confirm or discount that Elizabeth, John's wife's maiden name was Walker as i have been told, (but unable to confirm.)

Also, are there any Davies researchers out there for whom the above names ring a bell? If so would love to have contact. Thank you very much.
kind regards.

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / DAVIES lookup Gresford 1802 please
« on: Sunday 31 July 11 06:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I would appreciate if sks could please find out anything about JOHN DAVIES (sorry ::) ) who i have finally just found out was born in Gresford, Denbighshire in about 1802, and his parents, siblings etc etc.

He moved to Manchester, Lancashire prior to 1827 where his first child, Elizabeth was born. His wife's name was also Elizabeth and she was born in Manchester, so i think they probably married there. I do not know for sure what her surname was though i have been told it was Walker (I haven't been able to confirm that though).

He was a Joiner by trade, and i have the census records for him and his family in Manchester for 1841, 1851, but would love to know about his family of origin, and perhaps find out why he moved to Lancashire, and whether any others of his family either moved, or still may have descendants in Wales. I would have thought that having a trade would have enabled him to stay in Wales, or were there things happening then which made migration to other areas of Britain more likely?
It's nice to find out that we had some Welsh ancestors ;D

Thank you.

Ireland / Directories
« on: Tuesday 27 April 10 13:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I just want to THANK YOU very much for a wonderful resource which i have spent the last 8 hours searching through, without being anywhere near finished yet. I have only just found this post this morning. The directories that you have listed in one place, and the link to where the others are is very helpful and much handier than going all over the place to find them. Thank you, thank you, thank you.   :-*

Cork / SHEA's and O'SHEA's in Co Cork 1856
« on: Tuesday 27 April 10 04:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Can anyone please tell me how i can find out more about a John Shea and a Patrick Shea who were listed in the Slaters directory of Ireland in 1856, as having pubs at Skibbereen at that time? I do not know if they were both listed for the same hotel or each had their own. I am wondering about their families, sibs, parents etc, in case they are part of the family of my elusive John Augustine O’Shea (b c 1832 County Cork) who came out to Oz about 1848.  ??? He and some of his descendants were also hotel keepers/publicans in NSW. Thank you. Cheers to you all from Oz.

Devon / Charles Thomas HURRELL - Barnstaple, Devon
« on: Wednesday 05 March 08 11:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
After searching for my elusive ancestor for the past couple of years, and despite now knowing his full correct name and birthplace, I have been unable to find out anything further about his parents, childhood or any other siblings he may have had.

I am hoping that someone will be able to help me find some record of him in Barnstaple where he was born, and find some information that will lead to the remainder of his family.  ???

His name was Charles Thomas Hurrell, and he was born in 1862/1863, Barnstaple, Devon, according to his death certificate, which is the only thing i have to go on at present, as i can find no immigration/emigration records for him, indeed no reference to him at all in England. He married Margaret Donnelly in New South Wales, Australia.

I will be very grateful for any help anyone is able to provide to help me solve this puzzle a bit further.
cheers for now,
Barb

ps. If he was born in Barnstaple, which church parishes would be nearby that he or his siblings could perhaps have been baptised in, or even his parents married in??? Do they have records online?
