This is my 2x great grandfather, James Holmes. He was born in 1869, can anybody pinpoint an approximate date when this photo may have been taken?

Also, as it has been damaged, can anybody have a go at restoring this for me please?

Many thanks
Jo

Lincolnshire / GILBERT - Evacuee Letters from Louth
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 11:49 BST (UK)  »
I have some copies of letters written during the second world war by a Mrs S Gilbert who lived on Southlands Avenue in Louth, Lincolnshire. They were written to my great grandmother, who's youngest son was evacuated there.

I would very much like to give copies of these to her family as they paint such a lovely picture of what was, in essence, a most turbulent time.

Unforunately, other than a house name, I do not have any further details so if this seems familiar to anybody then please give me a shout.

Best wishes
Jo  :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Jane Tee - when did she die?
« on: Wednesday 09 June 10 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Jane PEARSON first appears in Hemsworth, near Wakefield in West Yorkshire on 24 May 1815 at her marriage to Charles TEE.  She then appears at the christening of her four children, Elizabeth, Edward, Sarah and Rebecca, the latest being in 1822 at St Mary's in Barnsley.

Charles then marries his second wife, Mary Eliza HEALEY in 1829 at Manchester Cathedral, although the family are to remain in Barnsley for many years yet.

When and where did Jane die? I'd like to know her age at death so I can progress in locating her birth.

I just can't find any record so would be grateful for any help at all.

TIA
:)

The Common Room / The $£ of genealogy
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Pah!! I'm sure I'm not saying anything that somebody hasn't thought before but how expensive is family history research becoming??!!

I started my research at the tender age of 13, years before the introduction of the internet, and whilst I truly appreciate the convenience of online records, the increasing costs I am incurring to view these said records, is becoming cause for concern. I was charged £15 for one certificate last week from my local town hall, topped with a years subscription to one of the big sites, in addition to another subscription because the census isn't included in the first one, wills are extra, as is access to old newspapers, etc. Need I go on!!

I guess once a hobby like genealogy becomes mainstream then everybody seems to jump onto the bandwagon, selling the information they have, even though all this information really belongs to our own ancestors.

Rant over now :), thank you.

The Common Room / Gentleman or Esquire?
« on: Friday 28 May 10 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Please could some kind soul explain what the differences would be in either being called a gentleman, or having Esquire after your name. I've come across it in a will, as follows [name], gentleman and [name] Esq.

Thanks in advance :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Help trying to find Tees in the 1851
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 10:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello everybody

I've been trying for a while now to locate the following family in the 1851 census:

Edward Pearson Tee, born 1815 in Barnsley, Yorkshire
his wife, Mary Tee (nee Lindley), possible middle name of Lyndonia??
(they married in 1839 at Manchester Cathedral).
Son Charles Tee born 1842
Son Edward Tee born 1843 - no further details

Edward (senior) died in 1855 and Mary died in 1860.  It's Charles Tee who I am most interested in. I have good details from 1871 onwards but not much beforehand. I've also been unable to find him in the 1861. Charles married Eliza Harris in Leicester in 1867 and they were in Derby in the 1871 and then Leeds from 1881 to the end of their lives.

Tee is a surname which I've seen transcribed as Tea, Lee, Lees, Tighe, etc, which of course makes it difficult to pin down. Thanks in advance :)

One Name Studies: A to G / BALDWIN One-Name Study
« on: Monday 24 May 10 09:14 BST (UK)  »
I have recently registered my one name study for BALDWIN with the Guild of One-Name Studies.

Still in infancy, I do however, have a large database containing many references to Baldwins. At this stage, they are nearly all in Yorkshire but efforts to redress this are underway.

Happy to assist wherever possible.

Warmest regards
Jo in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, UK

Census and Resource Discussion / Subscription...Ancestry or Find my Past???
« on: Wednesday 05 May 10 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody

I'm just about to invest in a 12 month subscription to either Ancestry or Find my Past but I can't quite decide which one would be best.

I'm an ex-Ancestry subscriber and was always really happy with the amount of relevant to my tree info on there. Find my Past is new to me and not sure how the two compare. For the record, the biggest majority of my family tree is here in Yorkshire, in the UK.

What are your experiences? Any tips on which one would be the best?

Thanks in advance
Jo
