Warwickshire / Martin BYRNES
« on: Tuesday 04 August 20 19:27 BST (UK)  »
I've anecdotal evidence that suggests that Martin Byrnes born 27/03/1927 in Galway worked as a bus conductor in Birmingham around 1950.

If anyone knows if there are employment records for this date and where they might be available, I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Lanarkshire / GORMAN, Blackhill Farm, Cadder
« on: Friday 26 April 19 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm researching the Glasgow connections of an Irish musician called Michael Gorman 1895-1970.

I'm particularly interested in the place where Michael was born and where his father, John Gorman, lived and worked. It's called Blackhill Farm and is off Blackhill Road in Cadder. It's still there but the period I'm interested in is 1892-1905. I've found a valuation roll for 1895 where John is listed as living on site. The Gormans moved frequently for work during this period, often travelling between Sligo and Glasgow.

I'd like to find any records, plans or photographs of Blackhill Farm during this period. It was owned by Alexander Young and run by tenants called Imrie, a family of farmers.

Has anyone any tip on where I might find information about the farm at this time?

Thanks

Banffshire / Murdoch, Windsor Cottages, Gamrie
« on: Friday 26 August 16 15:04 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate and marriage certificate which both mention an address as Windsor Cottage or Cottages, Gamrie.

Nothing else, no street or house number and no indication of precise settlement. However, anecdotally it may be in Gardenstown.

Does anyone with any local knowledge know where this address is or was? I've searched high and low and can't find it.

Thanks

Angus (Forfarshire) / James ALLARDICE Rossie Island Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 17:01 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the location of the above grave.

James Allardice was definitely buried in Rossie Island Cenetery in April 1836. FindAGrave have a listing for him and seem to indicate a gravestone.

But, the council only have records from the 1930s. I'm trying to get an approximate location as the cemetery is a large one and, as I'm visiting Montrose tomorrow, hope to have time for a look!

Anyone with local knowledge have ideas to help me narrow things down?

Angus (Forfarshire) / Dorward's House of Refuge
« on: Monday 15 August 16 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for records of Dorward's House of Refuge in Montrose? Or know how the system of parish relief linked to inmates of the House of Refuge?

I'm interested in the period between 1881-1884. My Great, great Grandmother's brother, Michael Allen went into the House of Refuge following the death of his elderly parents and died there in 1884 aged 45.

I'd like to find out if records exist, either for Dorward's itself or the Parish Relief records (if an application would have been made by that route). Michael was born in Marykirk (Kincardineshire) but lived in Montrose.

Thanks

Technical Help / Best Way to Scan Photographs
« on: Wednesday 27 July 16 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I'd be interested in any advice other genealogists might have on how they scan photos.

When I began this caper 10 years ago, I used to go to our local library and use the scanners in the family history department since I could scan multiple photos at the same time, save to a USB and take home.

Then I got a printer that could scan too and started using that.

Recently, I've seen details of apps that you use on your phone to scan photos. Has anyone used these and do you think they're better, as good or worse than a desktop scanner?

Cheers

Folks, I'd really appreciate some advice.

I turned 50 last month and my family gave me a Macbook (which I love). I've been researching my own tree for about 10 years and moved on to helping others with their family history as I work in community education. I set up a small research business last year and have had a few commissions.

At first I used GenesReunited which I found was really useful for storing data, then I bought Family Historian for my PC and, apart from a few niggles, it was great for data storage and reporting.

I'm now contemplating my next move and have spent hours reading articles and looking at demos online. I'm no further forward, to be honest. Family Historian doesn't seem to be available for Macs so I guess I'm looking at a change of software.

I like simple platforms and good design. I want the software to be UK friendly and being able to customise reports and charts the way I like them is really important to me.

Has anyone else been in a similar position and willing to share their experience with me? If I can narrow my choice down to 2 or 3 programs, it would make life a lot easier!

Hi
I'm trying to decipher the place name where Peter Chalmers lived at the time of his marriage in 1864. I think it is Bals??ney Lodge, Kirkcaldy.  I can't find any reference to the place elsewhere and would be interested in any suggestions.
Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / 3 Young Women Photographed in Scotland
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm interested in other people's thoughts regarding this photo that I inherited from my Dad.

Of the three young women, the only one I recognise is the one on the right sitting in the chair. She's one of my Great Aunts and was born either in 1894 or 1897. I think the photograph was taken during the 1910s or 1920s. I suspect it may have been during WW1 as the uniforms and ages of the young women would fit that timescale.

The studio was called E R Yerbury & Son - these photographers were based in Edinburgh.

Although my Great Aunt appears to wearing conventional Edwardian dress, the other girls are not. The one on the left hand side looks to be in some kind of uniform and the one in the middle is wearing a costume or another uniform.

Would love to hear if any Rootschatters have ideas about this photograph!
