Pembrokeshire / Rees family from Steynton, Pembrokeshire.
« on: Wednesday 01 March 23 08:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Just wondered if anyone can help.

I have a DNA match with someone who is matched as my half fourth cousin but cannot find the connection.

My 4 x great grandfather was a man named Thomas Rees, a labourer, born in about 1769 in Steynton, Pembrokeshire and who died on 12/12/1846. He was possibly the Thomas Rees born on 27/07/1769, in Short Row, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, to Thomas and Ann Rees. If correct was baptised 18/02/1776 at The Brethren's Chapel, St Thomas's Green, (Moravian), Haverfordwest.

Thomas married Martha Williams on 15/11/1804 in Steynton.

Thomas and Martha went on to have my 3 x great grandfather, David Rees, who was born on 08/12/1805 in Steynton.

David married Mary Ann Cornish in about 1840, (I have been unable to trace a marriage). Their first child, Hannah, seems to have been born in 1842 in Steynton, (I have been unable to trace a registration of birth for Hannah), their second child, Martha, was born in 1844, (died in 1847), and then they had my 2 x great grandfather, Samuel Benjamin Rees, who was born on 17/09/1845.

The person that I have the DNA match with has recorded that their great grandmother was a lady named Alice Maud Rees, (birth probably registered in Q3 1882 in the district of Pembroke, Wales, name just recorded as Alice Rees).

Alice's parents were James Rees, (born in Stainton, birth probably registered in Q4 1837), and Martha Thomas. James and Martha were married 13/12/1862 in the Parish Church of Dale, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

The parents of James Rees were Erasmus Rees and Sarah Jenkins, who married 05/10/1820 at St Thomas, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, (witnesses were William Thomas and Peter Hancock). Erasmus was born in about 1791, and wife, Sarah in about 1796.   Erasmus died in 1853.

Alice Maud Rees went on to marry John Albert Bevans in Q2 1905 in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

There must be a link because of the DNA evidence but I am struggling to find it.  On the DNA match James Rees, (born 1837), is recorded as a son of David Rees, (my 3 x great-grandfather, born 1805). This seems to be incorrect as I have traced James and his parentage seems to be as above.

Perhaps Erasmus was a son of Thomas Rees, my 4 x great-grandfather, and a brother of David, maybe from an earlier marriage??.

Any advice, as usual, gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Coreen

Ireland / James Stephenson Thompson
« on: Sunday 19 February 23 09:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

We are trying to trace my son's grandfather, probably born in 1931.

We know very little about him except his name, (even that is sometimes spelt James Stevenson Thompson and sometimes James Stephenson Thompson).

We have the M/C to my son's grandmother on 19/11/1955 at The Register Office, Eton, Buckinghamshire, England. No father is named.

His last child was born in 1958 and I believe that he deserted the family, possibly while his wife was pregnant with this child.

We believe him to be Irish, (probably from NI). Was probably living in London in the 1960s.

His former wife remarried early in 1962 so there must have been a divorce at some point. I think that we have traced his death, registered in Q1 2009 in Wandsworth, London and have ordered the certificate.     Hopefully that may provide a few more details.

Whilst we are awaiting receipt of this has anyone any further suggestions or recommendations for help in tracing his birth details?.

Kind regards,

Coreen

Isle of Man Lookup Requests / William Jefferson
« on: Saturday 28 January 23 09:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to confirm if the William Jefferson who died 23/06/1961, address 4, Bay View Terrace, Laxey, Isle of Man, is my relation. I can't trace an age so unsure. He was born on 21/10/1895 in Elton, Lancashire. He married Christiana Nuttall in 1917 and the couple went on to have a daughter, Marjorie, in 1920. Christina died in 1924 and I think William married Alice McNeil in 1925 in Manchester. I can see from the probate records that the William Jefferson who died in 1961 left his assets to his widow, Alice, and wondered if this could be my relation.   Any advice or information gratefully received.

Kind regards,

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / George Thomas Evans
« on: Sunday 29 May 22 10:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

This is a bit of a long shot but am looking for a George Thomas Evans whose birth was registered in Q3 1862 in Mile End Old Town, (born in Bethnal Green).

His parents were George Evans, (born 1833), a House Painter/Plumber/Glazier/Sign Writer, and Louisa Mary Ann Evans, (born 1837, maiden name also Evans).

I have traced George Thomas in 1871, when he is living with his parents, but have been unable to trace him from 1881 onwards, although in 1881, is possibly, the George Evans, aged 19, aboard the 'Mosquito', Royal Navy, Vessels, a boat mate.

Was possibly a witness at brother, Charles', marriage in 1888 but this could also have been George Evans senior.

Is definitely not the George Thomas Evans who married Louisa Jane Livett in 1882 as I have looked into this. There is another couple named George and Louisa Mary Ann, (sometimes Mary Ann Louisa), Evans who live in Bethnal Green. That George is a wood porter and this not the correct couple.

Kind regards,

Wiltshire / Burial records in Wiltshire
« on: Monday 22 November 21 09:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have found, what I think may be, the burial record for one of my ancestors, Mary Merrifield. She was buried on 22/04/1781 at St Edmund, Salisbury in Wiltshire. Next to her name is recorded: W.o S.T.P. Does anyone know what this means? I thought maybe the W.o may mean widowed??

Kind regards,

Antrim / William Moore
« on: Sunday 24 October 21 08:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am just trying to find the date that one of my distant cousins died. He was born in Belfast on 22/09/1913 as William Moore Smyth but, following a family argument, changed his name, by deed poll, to William Moore, his mother's maiden name, in 1940. He married a lady named Rosaleen McGreevy at about the same time. Some sources have recorded his death as being in 1989 and as being buried in Milltown Cemetery in Belfast, County Antrim but I have been unable to trace a record for this.

If anyone could help me verify this fact I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,

Northumberland / James Thompson
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 07:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Just wandered if anyone can confirm some information I have about James Thompson. His parents were John Thompson, (born in about 1848 in Hull, Yorkshire), and Emma Martin Hetherington, (birth registered Q3 1853 in Carlisle, Cumbria, England).  His birth was registered in Q1 1881 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland.

I am trying to confirm that he is the widowed James Thompson who, in 1939, is living in Tynemouth Rd, Newcastle. The DOB of that James Thompson is recorded as 27/12/1880. Via the registration of death in 1972, his DOB is recorded as 29/12/1880.   In the 1881 census James is recorded as being aged 3 months, which would be correct.

I have traced the Thompson family up to and including the 1901 census but then, after that, lose track of them. The only sibling of James that I can trace after 1901 is sister Emma Martin Thompson who married John Edward Courtney in 1910 and then John James Tweedy in 1919.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Hi,

I have been trying to trace a William Charles Fearn born 24/12/1893 and believe that he may have emigrated to Australia after 1901. His parents were Charles Henry Fearn and Hepzibah Powling. Any help gratefully received.

Cumberland / Edward Simpson and Margaret Emmerson
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to confirm any children born to Edward Simpson and Margaret Emmerson who married 29/12/1801 in Saint Cuthbert, Carlisle, Cumbria, England. I have details of John, born 1802, George, born 1804 and Margaret, born 1807. I suspect that there was at least one more son, Edward, born in about 1815 and there were probably more in the interim. Any help would be gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Coreen
