World War One / Ernest Lionel Alls
« on: Friday 17 July 15 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Please can any one point me in the right direction to discover the whereabouts of Ernest L Alls in 1917 & 1918. The more I look the more confused I get. :-\

Ernest was born 1888 in Chatham Kent & joined the ASC prior to 1911 where he is stationed at Aldershot. He married Ellen Elizabeth nee Robinson on April 8th 1911 in Byfleet Surrey. From his MIC he was a Driver in the No2 Field Ambulance ASC Reserve number T/28550. Am I right in thinking that he only served abroad in 1914 & could have been stationed "at home" for the rest of the war. Can any one tell me if the ASC were stationed in Grantham Lincolnshire in 1918, I have tried to find out for myself but without success unfortunately. ::)

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Jess was the husband of Mary nee Mackey who was born Birr Offaly, Ireland

His Regiment was part of the 18th Division who were landed at Singapore on the 13th January 1942 from USS Mount Vernon. The Norfolks were dispatched straight out to Malaya on the 14th of January having had no jungle training. By the 26th January they were amidst the fighting for Senggarang & surrounded by the Japanese army. Sadly Jess was one of the soldiers who were killed & many more taken prisoner.

Jess is remembered on the Kranji War Memorial & will never be forgotten by his family who are left.

World War One / John Gibson, Royal Irish Rifles
« on: Sunday 24 August 14 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have been left in the Will of my fathers cousin all of my Great Uncles memorabilia from his time in the KRRC during the first world war & beyond, amongst this is a Trench Torch that has the name J Gibson number 12818, etched on the bottom. I have found his MIC with the full name of John Gibson, Royal Irish Rifles number 12818 & also the service number 333814 for the Labour Corps, discharged 29/4/1918.

If at all possible I would really like to return this to a family member if any can be found that are interested. I am also intrigued as to how it came into my Great Uncles possession, did the RIR fight along side the KRRC in any battles of WW1. ??

Any help will be much appreciated as always.

Stanley was my Grt Uncle born 23rd Sept 1897. He attested to the 20th Bttn KRRC (Church Lads Brigade) on the 27th Oct 1915 following his older brother Jack who had joined up in 1914. Stan was twice wounded, firstly in July 1916 on the Somme & secondly at Sanctuary Wood in Aug 1917. He was posted to the 9th Bttn KRRC just a few days before the Spring Offensive that took place at St Quentin & was one of the many that fell on that first day, 21st March 1918. He has no known grave & is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial.

Stanley will be remembered with pride & honour by all his family for the sacrifice he made.

Hi

Would any one be able to help please, I am looking for the death/burial of Harriet Hambling in Swyncombe c1835/36.

Harriet Hester married Thomas Hambling 1834 in Nuffield, they had a son Stephen in 1835 Swyncombe. Thomas then married a Harriet Fox in 1837 so I am presuming his first wife died prior to this.

Any info is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

« on: Monday 14 October 13 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Bit of a long shot but can any one help, I am looking for a marriage of Richard Brown to Elizabeth ? somewhere c1785 possibly in Bucks. Their first child that I know of was born Kings Langley Herts (Nash Mills) c1788 & all subsequent children born either Kings Langley or Rickmansworth. I haven't been able to find a marriage for this pair in Herts any where so as Richard was a Paper Maker I wonder if he was born & married in Bucks.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

The Common Room / An accident at the Horse Guards Parade
« on: Monday 07 January 13 12:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Sorry if this seems a strange request but I'm hoping someone might have that little extra knowledge to help me. :)

I've just discovered that my Grt Grt Grandmother was one of 5 people injured in an accident in Hyde Park involving the Horse Guards in July of 1856. She sustained a broken knee cap, another lady had her leg broken & lacerations & a young man of 16 received a fatal kick to the head.

As these injuries would have required hospital treatment & surgery, most probably at great expense I wondered if the Horse Guards could have been held responsible. Certainly today they would have been. ::)

Is it likely there would be a record of this accident somewhere other than a report in the papers that might have more info on the people involved. As my Grt Grt Grandmother vanishes completely after having her daughter, my Grt Grandmother, in 1861, it would be such a help to me to find anything about her life between 1851 & 1861. I have all info on her parents & Grandparents but nothing for her with regard to marriages or death or why she left her daughter with a Great Aunt............... :-\

Thanks in advance.

South Africa / Constance Vera Laidler in Durban (COMPLETED)
« on: Sunday 02 December 12 23:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

If at all possible I would like to try & find out what happened to my fathers cousin, can any one help or advise me please as I'm lost in South African records. ::)

Her name was Constance Vera Howes born 1911 in Willesden Middx & married Francis Reay Laidler in 1932 in Willesden. I have found them both on a passenger list leaving the UK in 1939 for Durban SA. In 1950 Francis R is on a returning passenger list from Durban, accompanied by a different wife & son aged 11, whom I can't name as possibly still living, It would appear they have come home for a visit to Newcastle upon Tyne.

I'm guessing that between 1939 & 1950 Connie must have died in Durban & this is where I'm stuck. :-\

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
