The Common Room / Victorian prisoners
« on: Tuesday 10 January 23 18:52 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone knew how prisoners would have been moved from place to place in Victorian times. I was looking at an Ancestor who, in 1879, was tried at the Old Bailey and then was in Newgate Prison followed by Pentonville then Dartmoor. This was all serving one 5 yr sentence. I was particularly interested in how they would have taken him to Dartmoor but realised I didn’t know how even the more local London journeys would have been taken.
Obviously I have tried Google for this but haven’t found any clear answers, search results are dominated by info about transportation. Rootschat search not working for me at the moment.
Any info would be brilliant.
Thank you.

Glamorganshire / Trying to find a mill in Llantwitfadre
« on: Monday 28 November 22 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have a death certificate for my 3rd g grandfather Charles Mars. He died in a mill accident on Nov 19th 1856. The death certificate under the date of death says Llantwitfadre, Pontypridd. The cause of death says ‘crushed by the water wheel of the flour mill’. I have found just one newspaper report (I can’t find any in the Wales newspapers online but found one on Find My Past). This says he died at Mr Williams mill in Pontypridd.
I wondered if anyone has any ideas re the location of the mill.
Thank you very much.

Glamorganshire / Eliza Davies died 1931 - who lived at this address ?
« on: Monday 10 October 22 15:37 BST (UK)  »
I have received a death certificate for my 2nd great grandmother Eliza Davies. She died Feb 1931 at 24 Clare Street, Cardiff. I am intrigued to know who else, if anyone, lived at this address as it’s not known to me to be an address of any relatives and is in a different part of Cardiff to all previous addresses and family locations. It’s a large house I think so I’m wondering if it could have been a nursing home at the time as she was 87 when she died.
I can’t locate it on an Ancestry search by address and the last address I have for Eliza is in the 1921 census when she was living with an unmarried daughter in Albany Rd, Cardiff. She doesn’t seem to appear on any of the Ancestry Cardiff  registers in the 1920s.
Another odd thing is that I can’t find Probate for her although she was reasonably well to do.
Her birth full name was Sarah Eliza but she doesn’t seem to use Sarah in adulthood although I have tried to search with that too.
Any ideas re other occupants of that address in 1931 or just before would be hugely appreciated.

Occupation Interests / Master Mariner James Thomas Cardiff
« on: Tuesday 30 August 22 00:06 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for some hints re where to look for further info on an Ancestor’s career at sea.
Name is James Henry Thomas born Cardiff 28/09/1850 died Hong Kong 23/07/1900.
I have found info online re him achieving his Master’s certificate in 1889 and that includes a dated record of his ships from 1878 up until that point. I would like to find his records for the next 10 years but I can’t seem to access any further info.
Any help would be hugely appreciated. I’m trying to write a detailed account of this part of my family for my Mum and her sisters.

Canada / Looking for Florence Thomas
« on: Saturday 27 August 22 23:31 BST (UK)  »
I have a wedding record got my great grandfather’s cousin Elsie May Thomas born Cardiff 1888. She married William Barker in Toronto in 1911. I am pretty sure it is the right person as parents names (William Thomas and Margaret Watkins) are correct and I have a DNA match to a descendant.
Elsie had a sister Florence born Cardiff 1885. I have no records of Florence after 1901 in Cardiff but I think the witness at Elsie’s wedding is called Florence Ada/Ann Fisher, maybe as handwriting is challenging, so I wonder if this is actually her sister. However I can’t find anything else re a Florence Fisher.
One of Elsie’s records says her ‘sponsor’ in Canada is her sister.
They are a difficult family to trace. I guess, but have no sources, that their mother died in the late 1880s as both girls are with family members/others in 1891 and 1901. Their father disappears in 1891 and 1901 but reappears in Northumberland in 1911. I wonder if he goes to sea, they are a family with lots of links to the sea.
I’m fascinated that Elsie and maybe Florence emigrated to Canada on their own so any hints as to where to look next would be great. I have found a few possibilities on passenger lists but nothing I could be 100% sure on.

Glamorganshire / William Thomas born 1849 Bideford lived Cardiff
« on: Saturday 27 August 22 10:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to put together the story of my 3rd Great Grandfather and his children and one son is proving a little elusive, I have part of his story and some guesses, and some gaps.
The son in question is William Thomas born 1849 Bideford to William Thomas (1820 Chepstow) and Mary Ann Labbett (1819 Bideford)
I have William’s childhood 1851 and 1861. The family move to Cardiff early 1850s.
He is missing 1871 and reappears in Cardiff in 1881 married to Margaret Watkins with 2 sons - another William and Tom Labbet. At this point he is a ships carpenter and living in the same household as his brother (also Thomas Labbett Thomas)
He then disappears 1891 and 1901. I believe I have some of his children in those years - the two boys and two later girls - Florence (1885) and Elsie May (1888) At least I think they are his daughters based on later evidence. Florence and Tom are living with their Watkins grandparents parents in 1891, Elsie May possibly with family friends in Cardiff.
Florence and Elsie May are with their uncle Thomas Labbett Thomas in 1901.

My guess is that Margaret Watkins/Thomas dies in the late 1890s, the children go to different relatives and William goes away to work or to sea. He reappears in 1911 working as a shipwright in Blyth Northumberland.

I can find no further trace of eldest son also William Thomas who appears in the 1881 census. I believe his date of birth in that census -1874- may well be incorrect unless Margaret is not his mother as the GRO shows no relevant births.

I would love to pull together the different threads of this family particular William’s whereabouts in 1871, 1891 and 1901. Any help would be hugely appreciated as I am stumped.

The Common Room / Divorce in the 1940s
« on: Friday 11 March 22 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how quickly it would have been possible to divorce in the 1940s?
I am trying to unpick what happened to my Grandparents and their marriage break up and her subsequent re-marriage seems to have happened very quickly.
Any info much appreciated.
This was in Cardiff, Wales around 1947-49 or thereabouts.

Monmouthshire / Can’t find Thomas family Chepstow
« on: Wednesday 23 February 22 23:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for an elusive Thomas family from Chepstow

James Thomas born 1797 Chepstow
Elizabeth (Beams?) 1795

Children are
James 1816
William 1820
Caroline 1823
Sarah 1826
Elizabeth 1828

I have most of the children’s births and some marriages.
James was a trundle (tree nail) maker.

I know what happened to most of the children (my ancestor is William)

I just can’t find the parents in 1841 or 1851. I know they could be dead but I can’t find the daughters in 1841 either (son’s had left home). I would just really like to find out more about James and Elizabeth if possible and if they are hiding somewhere in those censuses that would provide some clues.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you
Louise

Glamorganshire / What happened to William John Davies ?
« on: Friday 28 January 22 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am really looking for some advice on searching Welsh Newspapers Online. I have ordered (hopefully the right one) a death certificate for an ancestor William John Davies died Cardiff Oct 19th 1900 aged 33.
Whilst waiting for it to arrive I have been trying to search for a death entry in the historic newspapers. In 1891 he was listed as listed as a marine engineer and his family were reasonably well to do so I thought there might be something. I seem hopeless at searching unless I have an unusual word. Does anyone have any tips?
Thanks very much.
