Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA % help please
« on: Wednesday 05 January 22 13:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I did a Ancestry DNA test and the best I have is 1 13% (906cM)..
As I have a lot of unknown for names I am more interested in heritage.
I am 65% Welsh, 23%Southern England and the rest Norway , Germany and Russia
My mother is 50% Danish (?) and probably 50% South England Counties
My father is a complete unknown.
Could a mathematician make an educated guess as to my fathers heritage please.
Many thanks for your time

The Lighter Side / BBC want volunteers (London 14/11) Update
« on: Friday 06 November 09 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I've had a request from a lady at the BBC who wants volunteers  :D
I asked if it was OK to post on websites and she was quite happy so here goes,

So lovely to speak to you just now. I'm attaching the flyer here, so that you have all the information to hand.
If you could spread the word among the web communites you're part of that would be truly fantastic! Feel free to pass on my email,

cathy.edwards[at]bbc.co.uk

and my direct line at work, 0208 0083985.

We're also looking for people with less experience on the web, so do all get your less web savvy friends and family to sign up too! Here's the information they need:

We're looking for participants to take part in a fun, 15 minute test as part of our series Digital Revolution (www.bbc.co.uk/digitalrevolution) - from a range of ages: 12 year olds, 18 year olds, 25–34, 45–54, and 65-74.

The test forms part of the 4th programme in the Digital Revolution series, 'The Web and Us', which looks at the fascinating question on whether (and how) the web has affected our thoughts and behaviour: www.bbc.co.uk/digitalrevolution/makingofprog4.shtml. We're backing a piece of scientific research to get some objective data on how people think when they're searching the web, and are working closely with University College London's department of CIBER Research, who are leading researchers in this field.

They'll run the test at a bank of computers in their lab on Saturday 14th November 2009 between 9am and 11am

at UCL in the DMS Watson Science Library (Malet Place, London WC1E 6BT).

She wanta about 100 people and you DON'T have to be there exactlly at 9am :)

The Lighter Side / Being creative with troublesome family
« on: Friday 11 September 09 07:16 BST (UK)  »
You are working on your family genealogy and for sake of example, let's say that your great-great uncle, Remus Starr, a fellow lacking in character, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889.
A cousin has supplied you with the only known photograph of Remus, showing him standing on the gallows.
On the back of the picture are the words: "Remus Starr: Horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison, 1885.
Escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times.
Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged, 1889."
Pretty grim situation, right?
But let's revise things a bit.
We simply crop the picture, scan in an enlarged image and edit it with image processing software so that all that is seen is a head shot.
Next, we rewrite the text: "Remus Starr was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory.
His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad.
Beginning in 1885, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad.
In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency.
In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."

Hi I bought a lot of old photographs today. Most of them are Spanish late 1800's / early 1900's.
This one is an English Photographer but I can't find him. Could any of you lovely people help please?
The photographer is Berry & Sharp and the address is 16 & 17 Poultry Cheapside.
Now according to soldiersof the queen.com  'The Mansion House Photographic House was at that address in 1900
AND according to a rootsweb page there was a Arthur Clegg Weston (photographer) there from 1901 - 1908, so when were my photographers there please?
I tried to put the picture on here but it kept complaining about the file name sorry

Berkshire / Random Info Cookham Dain 1814 onwards
« on: Friday 15 May 09 18:14 BST (UK)  »
I recently bought an old English Bible and a few names and dates were in it.
They are
Elizabeth C Hittleton Cookham Dain Berkshire 1814
Edwin Smith born July 1848 (but originally  written as 1847 )
James Bastin died January 24 1869
I'm not sure if they will help anyone
All spellings are as written and as the writers spelling of bible is bibble  there are probably mistakes.

Unwanted Certificates & Artefacts / autograph book John Callingham
« on: Wednesday 14 May 08 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I have an autograph book with about 12 pages of family autographs
Its all dated Oct/Nov 1949 in Farnborough , Hants
If this is of interest to someone in the family I would happily send it to them
John seems quite young as there is a receipt for school fees (sadly the school The Oaks, in Cove was  pulled down in 1967 to be replaced by the Catholic Our Lady and St. Dominic church.)

Hi I am helping a friend looking for relations . I have the two registrations  for the birth, but as neither surname is linked to the mother, how do I work out which is the adopted name and which is the birth name? Would sending off for the certificates help?
Many thanks
