Carmarthenshire Completed Requests / Abergwili Monuments
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Last November I was lucky enough to be able to make a weekend visit to Wales, primarily to see the Monuments in Abergwili Church to the Philipps family. While there I also visited the Museum  and sadly there was no-one there who could answer my query, Carmarthen Library was closed for refurbishment, so I was unlucky there too

There is a large Baroque monument high on the wall of the Church (in the Philipps family pew) which we were unable to decipher and I am desperate to know whose it is, also another high up near the Church door.
My other query was wanting a comprehensive list of interments in the Philipps vault.

Is there anyone out there who can enlighten me?
Anyone out there researching Philipps of Cwmgwili, Stedman of Dol-y-Gaer, Gwyn(ne) of Cynghordy and Glanbran?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 41,51,61,71 Mary Moore b Dec1837
« on: Friday 26 October 07 14:05 BST (UK)  »
This lady was born Walworth area of Southwark (Surrey) (cert. Dec Quarter 1837 Rotherhithe)
I know nothing else about her I am afraid; as a marriage (to Duncan Macdougal) has not been found

(Duncans first wife died in 1871 so theoretically, a marriage should have occurred between then and 1873 when Mary and Duncan start having kids in MEOT but I have searched to 1879 with no match-ups so far)

Carmarthenshire / Philipps of Cwmgwili
« on: Thursday 11 October 07 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for anything I can find out about Griffith Philipps of Cwmgwili.

I am aware of the Maj Francis Jones article on Cwmgwili, but I am especially interested in the wife of Griffith's son Herbert; Jane, nee Rowlands, and her children particularly after Herbert's death in 1792 onwards
Major Jones states Jane died in 1819.. does anyone know where she is buried? Or know the fate of son Griffith Martin Philipps and his sister (whose name I have not discovered yet)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / "Night and Day" some colour please?
« on: Thursday 04 October 07 23:33 BST (UK)  »
OK I know it isn't the right resolution, but I don't have a functioning scanner any more, but could someone please give this lovely picture a little colour to bring them "nearer in time" to us

The little dark haired girl in this pic sadly died two weeks ago, and I want something nice and colourful to present to "the little blonde girl", when she arrives back from the funeral (in Canada) to cheer her up a little (if possible)

I understand that the dresses were pink, knitted by their mum
I *think* the dark one had brown/hazel eyes, I know the blonde's are a clear but "wintery" green

or there is this one? which do you  think? I think those dresses were pink too.. LOL Just noticed the hand-me-down shoes!

I'd be interested if anyone can date this pic
I think that says "Wright, Portishead" in the corner.
My Mum used to tell me the chap in white with the pipe was her dad, but now she denies saying that so I dont know. He was a Stoker P.O I know he was abord the Skipjack at some stage, but I'm not sure he is in the picture. It looks post WW1 to me, but I thought the Skipjack was sunk in the war so I'm confused.. If anyone thinks they want to have a go at smartening them up a bit feel free.
I do own the photo, but cant rescan as my Tiny FU661E scanner wont work with my new Vista computer! :(

United States of America / Trying to keep up with the Joneses
« on: Friday 14 September 07 01:03 BST (UK)  »
My grandparents, Evan Leslie Jones and Caroline Frances Stroud married in 1919 in Southampton

They had three children.. my mum in 1934 and before her another girl and a boy names removed by moderator to protect the privacy of possible living people

I dont know where or when they were born, although Mum thinks they were "probably quite a bit older than her".. but in the timeframe 1920-1933 certainly.

I have had no luck looking for any of the family on manifests although it is believed they spent a lot of time in/lived in the USA and the other kids may have been born there. I could have missed them I suppose?

All else that is known for sure is that Caroline Frances Jones died in San Francisco in 1959.

I am desperate to try to find out more about this family. I have tried SSDI  etc without luck
Caroline was born in Portsmouth in Oct 1897 and often went by "Frances" or "Carrie" (mothers name Philipps fathers name Stroud)
Evan was born in London in Jun 1898 but may have lied to appear older.(mothers name Macdougal, father Jones)
I am at my wits end with them and I'd love to know if my Aunt  or Uncle  are yet living.
