Midlothian / Info reqd on West Church/St Cuthbert's
« on: Tuesday 11 September 07 08:54 BST (UK)  »
My g-g-grandfather's (James Scott) army record shows him born in West Church, Midlothian - no exact DOB but "aged 21" when he joined up in 1822.

His Guernsey death record has his parents as James & Ellen (but this could well be Helen).

I have a birth record of James Scott to James Scott & Helen Young in 1799 at Nicolson Street, St Cuthbert's, so trying to match them up !

Does anyone know if Nicolson St would be regarded as the West Church part of St Cuthbert's ?

Any help greatly appreciated !

Devon / HAKE Family of Broadclist
« on: Wednesday 18 July 07 08:40 BST (UK)  »
My g-g-g-g-grandparents are Robert & Hannah Bartlett in 1841 census at Broadclist. Probably married 16/3/1824. Also with them is Hannah Hake b c 1756.

Assuming she is m-i-law, I ordered some marriage indexes from Devon FHS.

However in the 1754-1812 indexes there is no Hannah marrying a Mr Hake.

Taking into account "Anna" as an alternative I did find

Ann Sheppard - Cullompton 1784
Ann Willey - Cullompton 1787
Ann Bedford - Exeter St Thomas 1784

but I may be clutching at straws here.

I'm still not sure if these indexes claim to include every parish or every record still in existence. My query to DFHS didn't get a definite answer on that one !

If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them !

Somerset / HILL and JENKINS Families of Redcliffe
« on: Wednesday 18 July 07 08:08 BST (UK)  »
My g-g-g-grandparents are Charles Hill (b c1815) and Harriet Jenkins (b c1813) who married in Guernsey in 1838.

They are said to from Redcliffe in Somerset (although on one census Harriet says she is b Bristol). Redcliffe Bay ??

Parents are given as William Hill and James Jenkins.

I've come to a complete full stop trying research further back.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them !

Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Looking for Charles Cawte - not in any records !
« on: Wednesday 18 July 07 07:58 BST (UK)  »
Charles Cawte is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. He is named (with Sarah Adams) as parents on Emily (my g-g-g-gm, 1846) and Sarah Jane (1847) Cawte's birth certs.

Occ carpenter.

The only possible marriage I find is 1840 at Lymington Church. Parents John Cawte (carpenter) and William Adams (labourer).

Emily is b Landport, Sarah Jane b Milton.

By 1851 Sarah has remarried to Charles Clarke and is at Ashley where she seems to originate from.

Only problem is, I cannot find Charles & Sarah in 1841 census, cannot find any record of Charles birth or death (even though that's been narrowed down to 1847-1850).

The Charles who died in 1849 at Southampton is the wrong man - he is a bookbinder who is clearly in the1841 census with his own family.

If I didn't know otherwise I'd say he never existed ! Any help much appreciated.

Devon / Any Bartlett or Hake Family Researchers ?
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 09:36 BST (UK)  »
My g-g-g-g-grandmother is Hannah Hake who married Robert Bartlett at Broadclist 16/3/1824.

in the 1841 census Hannah Hake (widow) sr is living with them.

That's as far back as I've managed to get (just using online resources from New Zealand) so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Devon / Hall & Norman in Kingsworth ?
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 09:09 BST (UK)  »
My g-g-g-grandfather is John Hall b c1821 in Devon. He was married in Guernsey in 1843 and the record says he is the son of John Hall & Mary Norman of Kingsworth in the county of Devon.

I haven't been able to find Kingsworth - perhaps it's Kingswear or Kimsworthy ?

One possible family in 1841 census at Sandy Cove, St Andrew, Plymouth (but can't read their occupations).

Any help would be appreciated.

Lincolnshire / Hurdman Lucas
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 04:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello from the north of China !

I usually do my research from NZ (difficult enough) but am now in this part of the world for a while. Painfully slow broadband for many non-Chinese web sites is a major problem for me now.

I raised this topic earlier but more info now at hand. I have looked at the place names on maps - that is one thing but expert local and practical knowledge is another. It may be more logical that a place further away has a more likely connection than one that is nearer.

My g-g-grandmother is Mary Ann Lucas b Donington in 1804 (parents Hurdman Lucas & Elizabeth Boore (or Boar) both born or "of" Spalding).

We have previously noted at least two possible Hurdman Lucas starting points: William Lucas and Frances Hurdman married in Well on 9/6/1719 (IGI has this and also a marriage for same two names at Hogsthorpe) and Robert Lucas and Anne "Hordman" married in 1719 in Bilsby.

I can find a William Lucas b 7/1/1693 at Authorpe. On IGI marriage as above it says William was b 1694.

It is physically possible that "my" Hurdman is either a grandson or great-grandson of an "original" couple.

I find a Hurdman bap 16/11/1770 at Alford whose parents are William & Rebeckah Lucas. I also find William Lucas m Rebeckah Brown at Alford 4/7/1766.

As "my" Hurdman's first two children are named William & Rebecca I think the 1770 Hurdman could possibly be my man.

I also find a William Lucas b 4/4/1736 at Orby, son of William & Frances Lucas (could this be the couple who married at Well in 1719?).

Various Rebeckah Browns noted on IGI are b 1738 Bilsby, b 1749 Saleby, b 1750 Pinchbeck, b 1732 Owston.

Other place names noted with Hurdman/Lucas connections are Belleau And Aby (?), Farlesthorpe, Theddlethorpe, Hogsthorpe, Hannah Cum Hagnaby (for Anne & Francis "Hordman")

Can anyone with more expert place name knowledge than me tell me if these place names are a likely fit ?

Many thanks for any help.

Francis

Lincolnshire / Info reqd on Ann Robinson
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 02:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello from New Zealand

I'm looking for information on my g-g-g-grandmother Ann Robinson who married Cornelius Wadsley at Wellingore on 15/3/1796.

I have plenty on the Wadsleys but nothing at all on the Robinsons - not even date of death of Ann.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Hello from New Zealand.

I'm trying to track my g-grandfather William John Bennett. His naval record says b 4/11/1874 (but I've known them to be a year or two out if people have lied about their age).

1901 census says he is aged 26 b Stepney. 1891 says aged 16 b Mile End.
Can't find in 1881.

Only thing known about his family (from wedding cert in 1901) is his father is also William John - a "General Dealer".

Checked thsee two likely birth entries

William Bennett - Mile End Jan 1875 (1c, 527)

William Bennett - Stepney (1c, 468) Apr 1875

But father is not William.

Have also found these (but not yet sent off for birth certs). Is Bethanl Green likely ?

William John Bennett - Mile End (1c, 581) Oct 1873

William Bennett - Bethnal Green (1c, 269) Apr 1875

William Bennett - Stepney (1c, 468) Apr 1875

William John Bennett - Bethnal Green (1c, 242) Oct 1875

William John Bennett - Stepney Jan 1876 (1c, 519)

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated !

Francis Payne
