Ayrshire / Help needed for Findlay families - Straiton & Dalrymple
« on: Saturday 19 April 08 01:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

I am having a difficult time trying to track down a family in the 1841 census whom were headed by John Findlay (born about 1792, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire - died 21 Feb 1879, Dalrymple) and Agnes McCredie (born ? - died ?) whom were married on 20 Jan 1815 in Straition according to IGI records.

At the moment I have found the following children of John Findlay and Agnes McCredie as being:

a) Sarah Findlay born 01 Jan 1819 in Straiton
b) David Findlay christened 24 Oct 1820 in Straiton
c) Jane Findlay born about 1822 in Patna - died 10 Apr 1887 in Ayshire (Jane is my 3rd great grandmother)
d) Matthew Findlay christened 12 Aug 1828 in Straiton

I do not know if there were any more children and I do not know if Sarah Findlay survived into adulthood and was married herself. Jane Findlay would marry Robert Woodrow.

I have found the Findlay family in the 1851 Census for Straiton, Ayshire headed by John and Agnes, and their two sons Matthew Findlay and David Findlay. There appears to be either a niece or grandchild named Mary Martin living the family as well.

By 1861 I only found a census record for John Findlay who appears to be widowed by this time, and once again his niece or granddaughter Mary Martin is living with him. In the 1871 Census John Findlay is living with my Woodrow family in Dalrymple.

Besides from the 1851 census I cannot find any further census records for the sons David Findlay and Matthew Findlay so I am not sure what became of them and if they were ever married and had any children of their own?

I shall end this message with some further details about John Findlay's parents and siblings.

From the IGI records it looks like my 5th great grandparents David Findlay (born ? - died ?) and Isabella Grieve (born ? - died ?) were married on 23 Nov 1782 in Kirkmichael in Ayshire.

I then found a few birth/christening records of their children whom included:

a) James Findlay christened 20 Feb 1785 in Dalrymple
b) Catherine Findlay christened 23 Jul 1786 in Dalrymple
c) Margaret Findlay christened 20 Jul 1788 in Straiton
d) John Findlay born about 1792 in Kirkmichael - died 21 Feb 1879 in Dalrymple (John is my 4th great grandfather)

At the moment I do not know if there were any more children and I do not know what may of become of James, Catherine and Margaret Findlay.

I would be very interested to see if anyone has any connections to any of the above Findlay family members!

Ross & Cromarty / 1864 Parish of Fearn death lookup
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 02:49 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone out there may have access to the Parish of Fearn death records for the year 1864?

The ScotlandsPeople Web Site indicates that such a death record exists for the following individual, but no image file exists.

There should be an 1864 death record for a 42 year old Hugh Sutherland. Hugh's parents should be recorded as Donald Sutherland and Isobel Main, and Hugh's wife should be recorded as either Isabella Tarrel or Isabella McDonald.

I would greatly appreciate any help in the transcription of Hugh Sutherland's 1864 Parish of Fearn death record!

Selkirkshire / Families in Selkirk with the last name Young
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Everyone,

I am looking for further information in regard to three specific families with the last name Young whom lived in Selkirk during that 1890 through 1950 time period, perhaps still living there today. Let me include the details that I currently have.

George Young (born about 1870 - died 08 Nov 1906, Selkrik) son of Stewart Young, stepson of Andrew Horsburgh married Emily Cochrane (born 15 Jan 1872, Edinburgh - died 1951, Galashiels) daughter of Moses Cochrane and Marion McBain on 29 Dec 1893 at Heatherlie View, Selkirk.

George and Emily Young had two sons, George Young (born about 1901) and Alexander Cochrane Young (born about 1905). I am taking a guess that both George and Alexander Young were both born in Selkirk. The two marriage records for the sons are as follows:

Alexander Cochrane Young and Agnes Smith Scott were married on April 13, 1928 in Selkirk at 4 Clifton Road. Alexander Cochrane Young was listed as being a cabinetmaker, and his usual residence was 21 Angle Park Terrace in Edinburgh, Scotland. Agnes Smith Scott, 21 years old, daughter of William Scott and Annie Mitchell was listed as being a hosiery factory worker, and her usual residence was at 4 Clifton Road in Selkirk, Scotland.

Witnesses listed for the marriage were Mitchell Scott of 4 Clifton Road, Selkirk and George Young of 26 Yarrow Terrace, Selkirk.

George Young and Matilda Mullins were married on January 25, 1930 at St. Philips Church in Edinburgh near Broughton Road. George Young was listed as being a Tweed Millworker, and his usual residence was 26 Yarrow Terrace in Selkirk, Scotland. Matilda Mullins, 37 years old, daughter of Lizzie Mullins was listed as being a Tweed Millworker, and her usual residence was at Forest Road in Selkirk, Scotland.

Witnesses listed for the marriage were Robert Irvine of 20 Dickson Street, Hawick and Alice Scott of 45 Tower Street, Selkirk.

It is my understanding that George Young and Matilda Mullins had a son named George Young.

It is also my understanding that Alexander Cochrane Young and Agnes Smith Scott had the following children: George Young, William Young, Emily Young and Elma Young.

If there is anyone reading this message who sees a connection to any of the above Young families, I look forward to hearing from you!

New Zealand Completed Requests / John Adam Donald Sutherland from Edinburgh to NZ
« on: Friday 13 October 06 01:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone!

I am hoping to track down the whereabouts and any potential descendants of a certain John Adam Donald Sutherland (born 12 Aug 1879, Edinburgh) son of Donald Sutherland (born about 1847, Hilton, Fearn - died 12 Oct 1879, Edinburgh) and Isabella Storey (born about 1854, Kelso - died 25 Feb 1913, Edinburgh).

John Adam Donald Sutherland was the twin brother of William Bruce Sutherland (born 12 Aug 1879, Edinburgh - died 27 Jul 1933, Edinburgh).

John married Elizabeth Gill (born about 1881) daughter of Robert Gill and Isabella Walker on 20 Oct 1902 at 35 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh.

At some point after 1902 John and Elizabeth Sutherland left Edinburgh and headed for New Zealand. After this, we do not know where he wound up in New Zealand nor do we know if they had any children.

The other few bits of information that I can add for John Adam Donald Sutherland, is that on his marriage record it indicated he was a Ship Steward and the usual residence for both John and Elizabeth Gill was 2 Upper Grove Place, Edinburgh.

If anyone can point me in the right direction on how I can potentially track down John Adam Donald Sutherland and Elizabeth "Gill" Sutherland in New Zealand, I would really appreciate the help!
