Scotland Resources / Link: Watt Library online index of BMDs
« on: Saturday 05 July 08 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Inverclyde Council has published an online index to BMDs in the Greenock, Gourock and Port of Glasgow area. The Watt Library Index of Births, Marriages and Deaths is compiled from the announcements made in local newspapers from the early nineteenth century to around 1913. The work is still ongoing and when complete will contain over 100,000 names.

I've just had a look at it and it is really informative and could be very useful to anybody with ancestors in this area of Scotland. (Lots of families where the men are seafarers or associated professions.)

« on: Thursday 19 June 08 00:30 BST (UK)  »
Hope this hasn't been posted before but its a great site with prison records, executions, court records etc. from UK, USA and Canada. Its got a list of all the prisoners in San Quentin in 1900.  Also has some lists of the first transportees to Australia from the UK. (Everything I've looked at so far has been free.)

The Lighter Side / Face of the Future
« on: Tuesday 17 June 08 14:23 BST (UK)  »
I don't know if this has been posted before, but its new to me. Face of the Future is a website from St Andrew's University where you can upload a photograph and change the age, sex and race of a person. You can compare yourself with some of the old family photos.

The University says, "The Face Transformer is a fun toy only, and is not guaranteed fit for any purpose, implied or otherwise. The Perception Laboratory and the University of St Andrews accepts no responsibility for loss or damage incured while using this software."

I've just had a go and after a couple of tries, it works quite well.

Hi All

A guy from Liverpool Town Hall has very kindly sent me a spreadsheet (1.51 mb) with all the names (over 13,000) from the Roll of Honour in the town hall (WW1). It includes both army and navy personnel.

If anyone would like a copy, please just send me a pm with an email address and I'll be glad to let you have a copy.

The Common Room / HMS Ark Royal in Liverpool today
« on: Friday 06 June 08 12:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

The Ark Royal will be arriving in Liverpool today at approx 1 pm (30 minutes from now). You can see the ship arriving at the new cruise liner terminal on this webcam

http://www.wirralcam.org/waterfront.shtml

This is really exciting for us as the Ark Royal has never visited before - she will be in Liverpool until lunch time Monday.

On the bottom of the wirralcam website there is also a link to AIS shipping information which shows all the ships in Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea. Can't see the Ark Royal there yet - so maybe it is running a bit late!

Hope you enjoy the views!

The Common Room / Does anyone think these are the same people?
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 12:51 BST (UK)  »
I am still trying to solve the mystery of my Yorkshire wedding photo. Comparing other family photos I came up with these likely contenders who married in 1912. The photo of the older couple would have been taken about 1940.

Do you think these are the same people?

Many thanks.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Westbury/Pontesbury pre 1841 look up please JONES
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 23:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello

Would somebody please be kind enough to see if they can find some Joneses in Westbury and Pontesbury for me. I am looking for information on

Richard Jones b 1794 in Westbury and his wife Mary also born in Westbury 1793

I do not know the date of their marriage but I have details of their children who were all born in Pontesbury. I have found them on various census returns from 1841 onwards. In 1841 they were living in Pontesbury in what looks like Hough Marrow but I am not sure. In the 1851 the family has moved to Wolverhampton and more or less stayed there. All the males were bricklayers.

Richard 1822
Thomas 1826
John 1828
William 1831
Eliza 1833
Robert 1835

There is a possibility of an Edward b 1816 in Westbury but I am not sure about this as I haven't been able to find a marriage record for Richard and Mary. If there was an Edward it would make sense of how the OHs great grandmother ended up in Liverpool. (If only it was that easy!)

Hoping somebody can find them for me.

With many thanks.

Lancashire / Liverpool old courts and housing website
« on: Friday 21 March 08 02:26 GMT (UK)  »
For anyone with Liverpool ancestors or an interest in social history, this website is a must.

There are loads of photographs of 19th and 20th century Liverpool. I've just been looking at some of the places where my ancestors used to live - it would break your heart to see the conditions in which they lived.

Its really well put together with informative commentary.

Fife / A Big Thank You to Annie
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 01:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All (and especially Annie)

Some time ago, 1st February, you told me that there were some records for the Fife Militia in the National Archives. I had a look online and found records for a David Morrison who I thought could be the brother of the elusive ancestor (James Morrison) I've been chasing for months and months. Well, I got the records a couple of days ago - 45 years in the Militia, 30 of them as a "good and zealous non commissioned officer", and a lovely description of him.

This then led to me following up on all the branches and twigs of the family and discovering that not only my ancestor, James Morrison, and his brother David but three of James' sons had all been in the Army. (Unfortunately, I couldn't find any records for any of them in the NA though I have found them in various census returns in England and Scotland.)

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I had a brain wave this evening and got David's death certificate from Scotland's People and who should be the signatory on the death certificate - yes - his brother James. So I now have confirmed the next link in the chain, James' parents names, which are very helpfully printed on Scottish records.

So that is another brick wall demolished because Annie gave me that little tip. Rootschat is like a great big cornfield, seeds are sown and results are reaped.

Many thanks.

Regards
