Australia / Totally off topic - A big Thank you
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 01:36 BST (UK)  »
This is a great big thank you for your hard work. I am in Melbourne at present uncovering the leads you have given me over the years regarding my Wilks family. The site of the hotel in Ballarat has been located and we are off there next week. Without you, I would not know any details.
Once again, Thank you
Ruth

Australia / Ballarat Hotel/ canadian Gully
« on: Saturday 14 April 12 08:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am trying to locate the locality of my gggrandfathers Hotel "the Dunmow Flitch" in Ballarat. I have found the following snippets and hope they will give an indication of where he lived. He also had a corn store, probably in the same area around 1857/1858. He left in 1861.

Any help is appreciated.
Ruth

A nugget weighing 3C oz. (with about 4 oz. quartz) was found yesterday near the Dunmow Flitch Hotel, Canadian, adjacent to the spot where the first large nugget was discovered.

A nice little nugget weighing 19 ozs was found yesterday by Walker& Millar's party of puddlers in the Old Canadian Gully, at the rear of the Dunmow Flitch Hotel. The lump was found at a shallow depth, and we hear the ground has been paying a very good average all alone.

The above committee recommended that a bridge be built over the creek between the itemerang and Dunmow Flitch Hotels, and  an embankment of about 250 feet be made from the rear of Wittkowskis house of the Last Chance Company, in order to stop the overflow of water to the Main road. His report was received and adopted, and it

Armed Forces / W. Gibbins 14th Hussars
« on: Monday 06 February 12 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
This is an area I do not have expertise so need some help. I know my ggranfather William Gibbins was born in London in 1852. I would like some help in locating some of his military records or history. I know from family that he served in India and came to South Africa after that. I have the following information that relates to his request for employment in the Colonial Office in 1885.

I have served in the 14th Hussars for 8 years 62 days, the last 6 years as a non-Commissioned Officer. Served in the Cape Mounted Riflemen 2 years 162 days and left with the rank of Sergeant. Natal Mounted Police 1 year 267 days. Discharged as a Lance-Corporal. I also served under Colonel Carrington as a Sergeant in the B.F.F ( I think this refers to the Bathhurst Frontier Force but would have to check that somewhere to be sure -if relevant. ). All my discharges are very good and beg to state that I am married(no children).
If you can do anything for me I shall be very grateful."

He married in Newcastle in SA in 1885 and was listed as a gymnast. I would appreciate some help - I think he was involved in the Zulu war in 1879 but was definitely not in the Boer War.
Thanks so much
Ruth
