The Common Room / tea plantations in India or Burma
« on: Thursday 05 April 07 23:28 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone out there know how one would research ancestors who traveled to Burma or India in connection with tea plantations.?  Need to find out if they owned a tea plantation, if they died there, where they would be buried etc...  Many thanks for any input...

Kirkcudbrightshire / Kirkcudbright surnames in 1851 letter
« on: Wednesday 15 November 06 06:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have an original letter dated August 7,1851 written by James BAIRD (son), Astoria, Oregon Territory, US  to Mrs. Nicholas BAIRD (mother), Castle Garden, Kirkcudbright, Scotland forwarded to Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire October, 3, 1851.

Several names mentioned in this letter may be helpful to someone looking for a lost relative.  Here we go:

letter refers to death of John EDGAR ; the death of Robert Robert CARSON (not sure if first and middle names are the same or it is an error in the letter)  ;  Mrs MAREN or NEAREN
(the handwriting is unclear)  ;  Aunt MARTIN  ;  Aunt  GOURLEY and family  ; possible old girlfriend  Margret (probably Margaret) JOHNSTON  ;  seaman  James CAMPBLE (probably CAMPBELL) sailing in a "Sloop of War" at kirkcudbright  ;  Astoria Bar Pilot  John  BLAIR  ;  brother - no name  ;  sister - Helen  (last name is RAMSDEN)  ;  niece  Jane (Ramsden) and deceased  nephew George (Ramsden - these are Helens children) .

And there you have it.  Just wanted to share .  I am assuming these are all Kirkcudbright folks except maybe the Bar Pilot....  If anything sounds familiar, but doesn't look quite right, I may have misunderstood the handwriting.  Just thought this may give someone a timeline for a rellie.
