Australia / The life of an ex-convict
« on: Monday 30 August 10 02:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to research the life of Charles Selwood (also spelt Sellwood), who came to Australia as a convict in 1833.
I have his 'Ticket of leave' issued in 1837 at Bong Bong court, and i also have his 'Certificate of Freedom' issued in 1840.
Charles worked for Charles Throsby-Smith, one of the main founders of Wollongong, and Glenfield (one of Throsby-Smith's estates) is mentioned on one of the certificates.

However, after 1840 I cannot find any record of Charles's life, I was hoping that someone could help me find out about Charles's life in Australia after gaining his freedom(or while a convict).
I have found a death record, from 1889, of a Charles Sellwood, who died in Liverpool, NSW (which is very close to Glenfield) and the man was 83 so would have been the correct age to be my Charles... but what happened to him in the 49 years inbetween?
Can anyone please help, or point me in the right direction?

Nathan

Armed Forces / Help!
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 00:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping that somebody may be able to help me, my ancestor RICHARD TILLEY apparently served in the 17th foot regiment between 1799-1823.
I have no idea of how to begin researching his career or finding out whereabouts he may have been posted or which battles he may have fought in.
On the 1851 census he is listed as a 'Chelsea Pensioner', and he lived in Towcester, Northamptonshire (although I thought that the 17th foot was a leicestershire regiment which is a bit confusing ???).

Any help anyone can give me with finding information about Richard and his military career would be much appreciated, thanks. Nathan.:)

Gloucestershire / Huguenots in Gloucestershire?
« on: Monday 02 March 09 13:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My LEONARD ancestors from Wotton-Under-Edge (near Stonehouse) were Weavers, by trade, and were Calvinists by religion.
I was recently told that Stonehouse may have had a Huguenot community at some point... is this true? How do I find out more information about the community?

I know the information I have doesn't prove anything, but I can't help wondering if the Leonards were descended from Huguenots, and i'd like to find out more.

The earliest record I have found, for this branch of my family, is James Leonard marrying Martha Elliott at Dursley in 1789. I believe James's Fathers name may have been Samuel Leonard.

Any help anyone could give me in tracing this line back a little further or any information you have about Huguenots in Stonehouse would be much appreciated. ;D

Thanks

Australia / Workers in the Illawarra (1800's)
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 18:21 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for records about the people who worked for Charles Throsby Smith (circa mid 1800's) in the Wollongong, the Illawarra and in Liverpool, Sydney.
I am particularly interested in finding out about my ancestor Charles Sellwood (Selwood?) who came to the region as a convict in the 1800's and worked for Charles Throsby Smith.

Any help with this would be much appreciated :)

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Help Needed, new to Canadian genealogy
« on: Tuesday 14 August 07 14:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi. I'm looking to trace any information about a relative called GERTRUDE MAY SELWOOD; born in 1899, in Purton, Wiltshire, England. She died 4 Dec 1919 Aged 20.
I have been told that she moved to Canada and married a man (possibly a Mountie) by the name of Mr M Donovan (first name not known).
The family grave in Purton records her name as Gertrude May Donovan (So they definately married) but i don't know if she returned from Canada or was buried in the grave.
Can anybody help me? I don't know where to start with this but would love to find out more about them so the family can remember them properly.
Thanks,

Nathan :)

Hi, just wondering if anyone knew how i can find out about someone who was 'Transported'?
I have come across a baptismal record from Purton in Wiltshire in 1836 which says: "This womans Husband was transported two years since".
The surname is 'Selwood', the wifes name is Anne any ideas?

Wiltshire / Malmesbury Squire's?
« on: Monday 30 October 06 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
There is a legend in my family of one of our ancestors being a 'Squire' of Malmesbury.
Does anyone know anything about what that would mean? What duties a Squire would have, etc?
Also, obviously i'm trying to trace him, the surname would probably be Amos and i think it would have been around the early 1800's... but not 100% sure - are there any records with which i could find out about this? I've been checking the census records from 1841 to 1901 and they haven't been amazingly helpful.

Nathan.
