London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Mayors of Highgate
« on: Saturday 03 July 10 13:40 BST (UK)  »
I hope I'm in the right place!   Family stories have it that one of my mother's brothers was Mayor of Highate, probably in the 1950s.   Does anyone know if a list of mayors might exist, and if so where would be a good place to start looking?

Census and Resource Discussion / 1881 missing information?
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 12:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm busy trying to trace my GGrandfather George Frederick ATKINS, born 1820 in Marylebone.
He's been pretty good up to and including 1871 census but, although he doesn't die until 1883 I can't find him or his wife Ann Rebecca anywhere in 1881.   Have pieces been lost?   If so, how do I find out which ones?

Lancashire / Shipwrights
« on: Thursday 11 September 08 13:10 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of the existence of directories or registers or similar that might be helpful in tracing an ancestor who claimed on the 1901 census to be a shipwright?   At the moment he's playing hide-and-hide, and I'd just like to change that a bit!   In 1901 he and his family were boarders in Barrow in Furness.   He claims to have been born in Scotland, his son in Ireland and wife and daughter in Buckinghamshire.   And I thought our generations were the mobile ones.

Buckinghamshire / M(a)cKi(or e)nnon - Wycombe
« on: Tuesday 29 July 08 19:57 BST (UK)  »
A twig on my tree is McKinnon.   The few references I've found so far have varied between MacKinnon, McKennon and McKinnon, so I guess there's a multiplicity of choice.   Can't find granny Clara when she was a McKinnon, so assume she never bothered with marriage lines - BUT she had a son Constant - and I can't find him either.   Birth would probably have been between say 1906 and 1913.   I've tried all the regular searches BMD records, freeBMD etc with no joy.   Do you reckon it's now down to a trawl through parish registers?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Local paper for Edmonton
« on: Tuesday 23 January 07 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me please which local paper I need to try and get hold of to look for a death/inquest report for a relative who died in Edmonton in 1902?   And, realistically, am I likely to find anything?

Family History Beginners Board / Local newspaper reports
« on: Monday 22 January 07 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks
I'm hoping that there's someone out there who can advise me please.

One of the relatives died (nothing unusual there) in apparently normal circumstances.   What wasn't normal (to me at least) was the fact that the certificate says 'received from Alfred Hodgkinson Coroner for the Liberty of the Duchy of Lancaster.   Inquest held 27 February 1902.'

Am I being unrealistic in thinking that this might have been reported in a local paper? (he lived in Edmonton N London).

Is there anywhere that I might be able to consult a list of what area was covered by which local paper?

Before I go off on a wild goose chase to Colindale, can I check on line to see what local papers they hold?

Kent / Where's Boldshaves?
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if Boldshaves still exists?   It was a settlement near Woodchurch during the 19th century.   I visited Woodchurch and followed the road which should have taken me to it, but it seemed to end up in a private estate.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Liberty of the Duchy of Lancaster
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone explain why a relative's death in 1902 should have been notified to the registrar by the Coroner of the Liberty of the Duchy of Lancaster?   My grandfather's brother Henry BARHAM died at home in Edmonton from Syncope (whatever that is).   However, his death certificate shows that the informant was a certificate from the Coroner of the Liberty of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Family History Beginners Board / Francis & Isabella Barham - where art thou?
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,
Excuse me if I get any of this wrong but I'm losing my posting virginity with this one!

Can anyone come up with a bright idea where I might find my relatives Francis BARHAM and Isabella (nee Bailey) on the 1881 census?
I can find them both on the censuses up to 1871 in the London/Middlesex area and then they seem to disappear off the face of the earth.   Francis died in 1883 and Isabella in 1899, so 1881 is my last chance to find out where he went before the great cab rank in the sky (you can tell my ancestors were "class") but I haven't managed to find Isabella on 1891 either.   I've tried all sorts of variations of both Christian name and surname;  tried looking around where children are recorded as living but so far no luck.   Do I just have to accept that they went to ground between 1871 and death?
