Hertfordshire / ARNOLD family Pirton Herts/Shillington Beds
« on: Sunday 21 February 16 21:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, I'm trying to track down my Arnold ancestry but the Arnold family seems to be a many-headed monster!  Mine seemed to oscillate between Pirton in Herts and Shillington just over the county border in Beds.  I am now stuck on Major Arnold (yes, his name, not a rank) Major married Sarah Chalkley or Chalksey in 1755 and had several children including my 6th GGrandfather Thomas(b.1767).
Major would have been born around 1730 but I can't find a christening record.  I have looked on Ancestry, Familysearch and FreeReg with no luck. Major died in 1803.  Can anyone find his birth?  Thanks.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ovenden DNA
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 17:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, I'm looking for anyone who is descended from George Robert Ovenden (1791 - 1860) and his second wife Jane Clare (1800 - 1888) who has had a DNA test.  I am descended from these two but by an illegitimate link and wish to compare my Ovenden DNA.  Many thanks.

Surrey / Alexander Forbes, Bermondsey
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 22:04 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently found on Ancestry a record of Alexander Forbes' marriage to Christian Rapier at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey on 15 April 1711.  He is described in the record as "mariner inSalisbury Land" but I have no idea what this means.  He is also a "Batch of this parish" but I can't find any records of his birth in London.  I suspect he is of Scottish origin but it's hardly an uncommon name so I'm wondering if anyone can help.

Sussex / General questions about illegitimate children
« on: Sunday 13 October 13 23:23 BST (UK)  »
I have often come across the 'fashion' for giving illegitimate children middle names which are probably the surnames of their natural fathers.  However, I thought that if the parents subsequently married the child was legitimised if the parents had been free to marry at the time of its birth.  Has anyone further information on this topic?

Leicestershire / Query about 'married' versus maiden names
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Looking on FreeReg just now I found the interesting information that my ancestress Ann Watchorn was a widow when she married my ancestor William Callis at Croxton Kerrial on 24th April 1786.  Am I right in  assuming that Watchorn is her dead previous husband's name?  I have previously been unable to find a birth record for her but this would explain it.  However I am unsure of the use of women's surnames at that period so I don't want to go off on a(nother) wild goose chase. Thanks. :)

Kent / Robert Allison fl. ca 1783
« on: Saturday 28 September 13 19:27 BST (UK)  »
My 4 x great-grandparents, George Ovenden and Sarah Allison were married in St Luke's, Old Street, Finsbury on 22/12/1789. Previously, on 12/10/1783 a Sarah Ovenden married a Robert Allison at the same church.  Since George had and older sister Sarah, the available evidence seems to point to them being the same families but I can find nothing further about the Allison family.  I don't even know where they came from.  The Ovendens were a Kentish family from Margate, Thanet but also had property in London.  Any info no matter how small might help me find the elusive Allisons.

Underneath the info block for each main person on the Family View is a button for searching online (left) or other stuff (right).  One of the things clicking on the right hand button does is offer Family Facts.  When I used to click on this it would offer derivations of the surname and the name distribution in the UK.  Now all it offers is where immigrants into the US came from.  I am not in the US so don't want to know this.  I'm in the UK and want the UK surname  distributions back.

Any ideas?

Devon / STONE family of Stoke Damerel
« on: Monday 25 August 08 18:26 BST (UK)  »
This is a shot in the dark but worth a try!

My 4xgreatgrandparents James and Elizabeth Stone had several children baptised at Madehurst, West Sussex, between 1788 and 1808 including my 3xgreatgrandfather Charles, bap 1793.

The marriage of James and Elizabeth does not appear in the Sussex registers and there has been some suggestion that the family may have connections with Devon.

If anyone has any info it would be gratefully received.
