Cheshire / Timperley Hall Farm
« on: Tuesday 25 November 14 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
Can any Rootschatter claim a link to Timperley Hall Farm?  The farmhouse was demolished many years ago.  The South Trafford Archaeological Group (STAG) are in the process of excavating the site having completed their excavation of the original Timperley Hall on the moated site.

They are in touch with direct relatives of the Bradbury family who were living at the farm in 1911 who have provided a description of the internal layout.  But does anyone claim descent from earlier tenants of the farm and can add knowlledge of it?

STAG has its own website South Trafford Archaeological Group and would welcome any info.

Lancashire / Richard Morton, Manchester
« on: Thursday 19 June 14 12:26 BST (UK)  »
Richard Morton was christened at Manchester Cathedral on 24th January !858   He was living as the youngest member of the family in Hulme on census day in 1861 aged 3.   His age is consistent too in censuses (1891, 1901, 1911). His marriage was registered in September Q 1886.  His birthplace is always given as Hulme.

But I cannot find a birth registration in order to send for his birth certificate. Can anyone help please?  There are no 'Male Mortons'.

What are/were the consequences of not registeriing a birth?

Clackmannanshire / Memorial Inscriptions
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 19:33 GMT (UK)  »
I recently purchased a copy  of Clackmannanshire memorial inscriptions pre-1855 from the Scottish Genealogy Society.

A number of the memorial references were of the form (e.g)  1825 Michael Penman  2 lairs.

Does this mean that there were only 2 grave spaces / lairs? in the spot and one of these was occupied by Michael Penman who died in 1825?    But that does not really make sense when making comparison with other memorial inscriptions.

Can anyone help me please?

Clackmannanshire / Tobias Bauchop married Janet Vanan
« on: Wednesday 01 January 14 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
Tobias Balk married Janet Vanan in the parish of Clackmannan on 19th December 1746 (per SP image).  Ten months later their son John Bachop was baptised also in Clackmannan. (John Bachop lawful son of Tobias Bachop and Janet Vanan, Clackmannan (per SP Image)).

It is apparent that parish clerks had great difficulty in spelling the surname Bauchope, Bachop or similar. How should it be pronounced?  But Balk, Baulk etc ?

Based on her baptism date, Janet appears to be about 15 when she married Tobias.  SP provides three Tobias Bauchops who could be Janet's husband. All three baptised between 1710 and 1714 - one in Alloa, the others in Clackmannan.   However a marriage between a 37 yr old and a 15 year old?

Not knowing the area could anyone suggest a iikely graveyard, please?  Inscriptions recorded?
Any other thoughts please?

Dumfriesshire / James Porteous, Blackburn, Lancashire
« on: Tuesday 17 December 13 21:32 GMT (UK)  »
James Porteous was a Draper in Blackburn in 1851, 1861 and 1881.  He is recorded in all censuses as being born Scotland and in the 1861 as being born Ruthwell.  Consistent ages provide a probable birth year of 1816/1817.

My Porteous research started in the 1980s (pre computing  :) ).  From that period I was given a tree that provided two more generations before James and his wife Jane/Jean Burnet.  I understand that this is one of the families in Porteous Associates.  James' parents were David Porteous and Helen Crichton (spelling?).  No date was shown for their marriage or James' birth/baptism.  I think some ages/dates had been obtained from the memorial surveys done in the 1960s - therefore deaths.

A few days ago I received a PM asking if my Porteouses were connected to the writer's and so I decided to check things using on-line census returns and particularly Scotlandspeople. Although census returns added to previous knowledge  I could not find a marriage for James and his wife Jean/Jane Burnet.   Nor could I find a birth/baptism for a long time for James. I was confident that both events would be in Scotland.

Eventually I found a baptism on SP for a James Calvert Porteous.   This was on 29th March 1816 in Hoddam parish. But . . . parents were James Porteous and Helen Calvert  . . . .not David Porteous and Helen Crichton, as (half?) expected.  I could not find a marriage of (son) James to Jane/Jean Burnet either.  Purely by chance I  Googled using both their names and found their names in a database created by volunteers (?) from the Wigtownshire Free Press. This provided that "at Ecclefechan on 18th September 1843 James Porteous, draper, Blackburn to Miss Jean Burnet, daughter of Mr Edward Burnet, Ecclefechan"    But not on SP - unless you know different :)

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Austin Woodcock
« on: Tuesday 08 October 13 13:42 BST (UK)  »
Austin Woodcock was a 2 yr old boy living on Cherry Lane, Lymm with his parents Henry (35) and Ann (24) Woodcock and his older sister Annie (4).  His birthplace is given as Warrington

There is no sign of a birth for him via FreeBMD nor a baptism in the Lancashire Parish Chest.
I can't find anything in Cheshire Baptism Database.  One possibility may be a baptism at Bowdon which I don't think is covered by the Database yet.

Could someone check for me, please, and/or suggest other options?

Dumfriesshire / Robert Beattie
« on: Thursday 10 January 13 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
Robert Beattie is buried in the cemetery at Lochmaben.  His headstone reveals that he died 26th June 1851 aged 81 years. He married Janet Chalmers at Lochmaben on 16th August 1811. They are my 3 greats Grandparents.

In 1795 Robert had married firstly Mary Graham also at Lochmaben.  (The OPR states that they married clandestinely. What does this imply, please?).  Based on his calculated year of birth he was 15 or 16 at the time. So much I know.

In 1917 my great uncle (Robert's great grandson) went to Watcarrick in Eskdalemuir and around to find information about his forebears and apart from some photographs some information was written down including details about William Beattie and Ann Scott of Watcarrick taken from their headstone.  and he noted 'Robert Beattie was born there'.

After many, many years I cannot find a positive record for Robert's birth/baptism that links him to Eskdale but - - -maybe somewhere else.
Can anyone help please?
