The Common Room / Workhouse guardians
« on: Monday 21 March 22 19:17 GMT (UK)  »
In 1894 the sons of an inmate of Hartlepool workhouse were summoned by the guardians to explain why they should not be expected to contribute towards their father’s upkeep. The inmate had gone into the workhouse in the hope of persuading two of the four sons that they should look after and fund him. One son had previously looked after him and another given financial support.
Despite searching, I have not managed to find out what powers the guardians had to demand payment, or what penalties they could apply if no contribution was made?

Any suggestions of where to search would be appreciated

The Common Room / Errors on 1921 census
« on: Thursday 10 February 22 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
Earlier I was checking that my mother’s siblings were where I expected them to be in 1921. Several of them have very glaring errors in the search results with their first or second name. Admittedly they do not have easy names. However I cannot imagine, that for example, my grandfather would have given the Christian names Ella Frederick for his daughter Ella Gertrude.
Is there any way I can inform FindMyPast without having to purchase the image?

Added: The family lived in a small hamlet for generations, and all info other than parts of names are correct, so I know it is the correct family.

The Common Room / Journalists in 1900
« on: Saturday 05 February 22 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have a relative who in 1891 was a journalist on a local paper in the Durham area. He moves with his wife and family between 1893 and 1895 to be a journalist in London, and by 1901 is earning enough to employ a servant.

Are there any records that might show which newspaper(s) he might have worked for?

The Common Room / Would the lack of a birth registration have been a problem?
« on: Tuesday 28 December 21 18:31 GMT (UK)  »
Today we can hardly do anything, or so it seems, without proving who we are in multiple and specific ways.

I have a relative who appears to have been born in 1898, but his birth was not registered, as far as we can tell after decades of searching. His death was registered in 1985. At any point in his life would there have been any occasion when not being registered at birth (in England) would have caused difficulties for him?

Thank you in advance

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / PaulaToo. R.I.P.
« on: Friday 27 August 21 07:28 BST (UK)  »
It is with much sadness that I write to let you know of Paula’s passing. She tragically died in an accident while walking near her home on Tuesday.
She was a lovely lady. Kind, humorous,  generous of her time and very skilled at many things.
She will be greatly missed by her many friends.

The Common Room / David Jones - still confusing me!
« on: Friday 06 September 19 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I still have not been able to pin down the birth of David Jones.
(There is a previous thread regarding him from 2017, but I do not know how to add a link)

Facts:

David Jones married Emma Holmes (or Hulme) 16 Feb 1862.
His father named as Thomas Jones a mill furnaceman.
- not William as shown on many trees on various other sites.

David and father Thomas have not been found together on any census.
David given age of 20 on marriage. Other census after marriage give birth range as 1839-1843.
Birthplace varies.

Many David Jones in County Durham.
Eliminated most, with the probability being that he is the following one

Nephew to John Jones in 1861, in Escombe.
Grandson to David & Elizabeth Jones in 1851 in Wales.

I have now managed to link the two references as follows:
John Jones married Margaret Morgan in 1854 in Rotherham
John’s father is said to be David Jones a shoemaker.
John is born in Merthyr area, and David on 1851 is living in Bedwelty and is listed as a cord warner

Thomas Jones is very difficult to identify. I am assuming he must have been somewhere around the Wolverhampton area in approx 1840 unless he went missing before his son was born

If I accept the idea from most census info that David jr was born in Staffordshire I have no idea which one is correct without being able to link his father to him, and then to David senior, if that is actually my relative too.

Any help or ideas much appreciated

Being very careful not to identify the man concerned in case he is still alive, I would appreciate  advice on how I might find out where he is and if he is alive or has died.

I know he was born in England in 1932, married, had a son and then went to South Africa to work, in the mid 1960’s, taking his family with him. I have an address in the Transvaal in 1974, and then nothing. I have no idea where he was before or after that date. Shortly after that date he sent his son back to his wife’s parents in England so he was not conscripted. They are no longer alive, and his son is proving elusive.

I would really like to find out where the man is. I have tried all the usual checks in England and no sign of him or his wife.
Any suggestions as to how I attempt to look for him in South Africa would be appreciated
