Ayrshire / Blair family of Dalrymple
« on: Saturday 11 February 23 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have a connection to the descendants of this family who lived at Holmes Farm, Dalrymple?

The young ladies on the right of my avatar may be sisters. My mother Mary Saxton is on the left and it may have been taken c1920.

A friend recently lent me this delightful little family history book. It's well worth a read if you live in this region.

The Common Room / Just clicked with the 1921 Census
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 14:56 GMT (UK)  »
Wanted to say thank you once again to the contributors on RC for all their knowledge and queries and answers re the 1921 Census.

I've been looking for my father Alexander Bradbury (born 1906) but he wasn't with his parents and great aunt Elsie, where he was on the 1911 Census. There was an Alice who I was really excited about and have spent a few weeks searching for. However reading your 1921 comments thoroughly I understand there were many mistranscriptions because it was done in India.

My father at age 15 was probably known as Alec! Hence Alice.

Technical Help / New email scam
« on: Sunday 30 January 22 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
We've had a couple of suspicious threatening emails over the past couple of days. Blackmail really. If we pay up in bitcoin they will leave us alone. Deleted everything but now our email account has gone "haywire" and my Facebook account is blocked because of suspicious activity. Is it Putin?

Anyone else in the same predicament?

The Lighter Side / Ancestry and personal family trees
« on: Friday 05 March 21 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
I suspect this has been mentioned before - maybe many times.

During lockdown my local library has allowed online access to Ancestry Library Edition. I've not bothered with A much before, always preferring FindMyPast. Noticing a family tree with my members in it I was shocked to see all the errors the person had quoted. Also, nowhere could I find how they linked these into their tree anyway. Just saddened to realised this person must have accessed my tree somehow and scrambled it all up! I didn't delve too deeply into it in case I also featured therein too!

Why do people do this.? The family tree was called Cobham Family Tree and I've never heard of anyone with that name on my tree.

Census and Resource Discussion / Birmingham Police "mugshots"
« on: Friday 13 November 20 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have been browsing my library edition of Ancestry remotely using my Solihull library card. I found a family tree which claims a photo, which I can access, is of an ancestor Mr John Blakemore (drunk & disorderly banned from pubs!). How do I access these photos myself please? Thanks in advance.

Ireland / Irish Potato Famine
« on: Wednesday 15 January 20 10:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I'm not sure which thread I should post this topic on. Maybe the book thread would be more appropriate but I couldn't find it. Sorry.
I am reading a trilogy by Charles Egan starting with The Killing Snows about the Famine and subsequent emigration to various places. It's a real eye-opener for me about the suffering and starvation which occurred. I have been researching my own gtx2 grandfather who appeared as a vagrant from Ireland in Dumfries & Galloway about that time (1840s) along with his impoverished family.
It's an interesting story but interspersed  with horrific facts about those disturbing times.
Has anyone else read these books?

Canada / Still Looking for Uncle Tom Hawker went to Newfoundland
« on: Wednesday 27 November 19 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am sure I have posted a request on Rootschat before about "Uncle Tom" but I cannot find it to link.

There have been several family stories about this gentleman who was in the merchant navy and went to St. John's, Newfoundland. His name was Tom Hawker and the stories came from a brother and sister, Arthur and Edith Hawker, my husband's father and aunt.

Today I found a ship's passenger list. The Parisian, 1905, with a T Hawker, Labourer, with final destination as St. John's, Newfoundland. How can I find out more about this entry please?

He may or may not have ended up in Toronto as the owner of a Livery Stables.

If I am duplicating research I do apologise in advance.
