The Common Room / Grant of Probate
« on: Tuesday 09 January 24 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
Just obtained copy of probate and will for someone I am researching.

Two figures are given: gross value of the estate and net value.

I am assuming this is before and after tax. Could someone please clarify. Thank you.

(Relates to probate granted at High Court of Justice England and Wales)

The Lighter Side / Harriet
« on: Saturday 04 December 21 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
Having seen the latest WDYTYA? (Ed Balls) reminded me of an ancestor who was born in Blean, Kent.

I don't know her surname, but she was born in Blean c1788.

Married to Thomas Tayler, who was from Canterbury.

Her son, Thomas Tayler was born 1815 in Canterbury.

Son and mother are on 1841 and 1851 census after which Harriet disappears from the records. Presumably, husband died before 1841.

It would be good to tie this one up, but she has sat on the tree all this time with very little information about her.

(Incidentally,  the Blean workhouse featured in the programme was built in 1835, so she may well have seen it.  I have no reason to believe she was a resident and difficult to search without a surname. I just find it fascinating to think my relative knew those streets all those years ago!)

The Common Room / Ancestry - free to view Military Records?
« on: Wednesday 10 November 21 10:55 GMT (UK)  »
Settled down this morning to take advantage of this offer.  So disappointing. Is it just WW records because of the anniversary this week?

I have already done these quite thoroughly, but wanted to go back to a relative, William Francis Tayler who was involved in the Boer War in South Africa. The record is indexed, but not accessible.

Armed Forces / Enoch Farr d 1851 India
« on: Saturday 27 March 21 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi. I am new to this section, so hope I am in the right place.

Some days ago, I posted on the Common Room relating to Sarah Haines, who married Enoch Farr in 1847.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=846525.0

In 1853 she married John Owen Hughes and described herself as a widow. I have been unable to find a death record in this country for Enoch , but a burial record was brought to my attention - 6 August 1851, Meerut, India. (1st European Bengal Fusiliers)

I have searched (as best I know) for information on this regiment in 1851, but nothing for the year in question. Just wondering if any military experts can suggest where I can find more information. it may be that Enoch died of cholera and not in action (Having seen the graveyard in Lucknow I know how devastating cholera was).

On some records, the name Enoch is spelt Enock.

Any help, much appreciated.

Thanks

The Common Room / Sarah HAINES (or HAYNES)
« on: Thursday 25 March 21 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
Sarah Haines - married 1847 Enoch Farr, St James, Shirley, Warwickshire (Both aged 22)
Sarah Farr - married John Owen Hughes, !853 Tardebigge, Worcestershire

On the second marriage, she is described as a widow. So, guess I am looking for death of Enoch - which I can't find.

I have Sarah on all censuses from 1851, until her death in 1896.

On both marriage certificates, her father is given as Richard Haynes (Haines) labourer.

The other connection is the needle industry. Enoch and his father are described as needlemakers, Sarah in later censuses is a needle paperer

A few gaps here that I would love to fill.  Seems a nice project for a sunny afternoon on lockdown - but I am stumped!

Help, please.

The Common Room / Travel 1860s
« on: Wednesday 30 December 20 22:11 GMT (UK)  »
Reading a book ("The Five" as recommended on Rootschat) where one of the families travelled from Wolverhampton to London by canal barge.

This got me wondering about travel in the 1860s.  In my tree I have a family who travelled from Glasgow to Redditch, Worcestershire in 1865 or 1866.  This is a fairly accurate date. One of their children was born Glasgow 7 May 1865, buried August 1866 Redditch.

My question is How did they travel? There were railway stations in Glasgow and Redditch at that time.

Worcester & Birmingham canal runs near Redditch at Tardebigge. there is a canal system around Glasgow.

Just wondering what you all think - there maybe even a canals expert out there who would know exactly!!

I am thinking canal travel would be cheaper than rail. (The child that died was the youngest of four)

The Common Room / 1939 Register is this still being updated ?

Is this register still being updated?

I ask, because there are some entries blacked out, and I know the people are long gone.

Thanks

The Common Room / Ernest August Eves Baptism 1824
« on: Saturday 07 March 20 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
I am in the process of updating the records I hold on my family tree - hence the odd questions I keep throwing in here!

Ernest August Eves Baptism is recorded in 1824.  I have found that I have two records for this, seemingly identical, but they are not. (Barnes, Surrey, 14 Nov 1824)

One has the number handwritten, the other appears to be printed on the register.

Does anyone have any ideas why this should be?  They do have different download reference numbers - maybe one is the record kept at the parish, the other sent elsewhere. I don't  know. Just a puzzle for a rather grey day on March|!|!

Or am I going totally doolally in my older age! (please don't answer that!!)

Thanks

The Common Room / Marmaduke Westwood
« on: Saturday 29 February 20 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
With the arrival of another member of our family tree this week, I feel that I should ask for help in getting more information about Marmaduke.

I have in my possession a "Family Pedigree" of the Westwood family which sparked my interest - maybe obsession at times - in family history.

Over the years I have managed to link the end of the document with more up to date information, but would dearly love to get a few more facts about the first Marmaduke on the list. I have also, with the help of online availability of scanned records, been able to prove that the facts in the document are correct.

So here goes:

Marmaduke Westwood, lived in Worcestershire - in the 1600s, maybe earlier.

His son, Francis Westwood, married someone by the name of Foley.

Their son, Benjamin Westwood, born 1663. Married Elizabeth Lawrence 18 August 1694 at St. James, Clerkenwell. (Descending family are then connected with London area from then on.)

If anyone can shed light on these three, that would be great! Family connections could be Braithwaite, Newby, Tayler.  There are records of some Westwoods and Braithwaites going to Australia.

Would be so good to link this tree up and present to the new little chap as a present!

Thanks - in anticipation!!
