Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Delahunt family burial plot, Sheepscombe
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 19:26 BST (UK)  »
Gloucestershire registers on Ancestry show that four Delahunts (two unmarried sisters, their brother and his wife), who died between 1951 and 1971 were all buried at Sheepscombe.

I am visiting friends in Stroud this weekend and would like to take a photo of the Delahunt grave if there is one. If anyone has a copy of the MIs, please could you look up the surname and tell me if a gravestone exists? My main interest is in Jane Delahunt, 1877-1954.

Thank you

The Common Room / Ancestry Message Center, is it not working at the moment?
« on: Friday 01 January 16 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
I had an email notification of a message left for me by another Ancestry member. I can probably give this person some help, but when I try to respond I am sent to
http://connect.ancestry.co.uk/messagecenter/folder/inbox/message/64917888?o_xid=61772&o_lid=61772&o_sch=Email+-+Programs

which just appears to me as a blank page.

I have an account and a private tree on ancestry.co.uk but do not have a current sub. Is anyone else having this difficulty?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Baptism of Jane Yates, Prescot, 1750
« on: Thursday 05 November 15 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone suggest what the word before 'in ye Colepitts' might be?

"Jane ye daughter of William Yates _____ in ye Colepitts & Rachell his wife was born ye 2nd of September & christened [19 October 1750]..."

The register is from St Mary's Prescot, Lancashire and is on Ancestry.  William and Rachell had several other children baptised at St Mary's; William's occupation either labourer or collier. I can see one word but find it unlikely, so would appreciate second thoughts

Thanks

The Common Room / Is Sammy as a girl's name (18thC) a diminutive?
« on: Sunday 18 October 15 13:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering about the origin of Sammy or Samey as a female name in 18th century Lancashire. As in:
Sammy Killshaw, baptised at St Mary's Prescot, 16th April 1750, daughter of John and Sammy Killshaw
(John Kilshaw married 'Semey' Runcorn at St Helen's Prescot on 5 November 1739)

I'm not convinced by Google's suggestion of Samantha, and I don't think it's from Sarah, as the above John and Sammy Kilshaw had a daughter baptised Sarah in 1743.

Could it be Samuelina or Salome, or is it just a standalone name?  Any suggestions gratefully received,

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What's the name of this vicar?
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone decipher the name of the clergyman here?

This is a marriage at St Paul's Warrington in 1952. I think underneath the sinature it says Vicar In Situ Warrington (or Winnington!) and he only appears once in the register set I have.

This is for a transcription for Lancs OPC.

Thanks

Technical Help / Firefox 'Document Expired' message - how can I change settings please?
« on: Wednesday 01 October 14 10:55 BST (UK)  »
Can somebody advise me please?

When I go on FreeBMDs (several times a day as I check for LancsOPC) the following happens;

I enter search names/dates and get a list of possibles as usual
I click on one that's of interest, look at it then decide to go back to the search results - But
When I click my Back button to return, I get this 'Document Expired' message, as below.

I've had the same thing happen with the Old Maps website. It's annoying and time-consuming; is there anything I can alter in my settings that will fix it?

Thanks

The Lighter Side / Sending private messages in Ancestry - do you need a sub?
« on: Monday 17 March 14 13:30 GMT (UK)  »
I have an Ancestry.co.uk account, but no current subscription. Last week another member sent a message which I replied to, but this morning he has sent another introductory request for contact, which suggests he didn't get my reply to his first.
Can you only send messages in Ancestry if you have a sub? Or has he just not checked his inbox? I would be interested in making contact if I could!

Could anyone tell me what the place name is after the name John Fisher please?  N for North something? It's from a page of Glassary baptisms for 1799.

Thank you,

Staffordshire / Matthew Plant b. 1804 Swynnerton
« on: Monday 30 July 12 18:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for a baptism and parents for Matthew Plant, who married Ann Dain at Haughton parish church in 1830 and lived at Ashton Farm north of Eccleshall.

In all censuses he gave year of birth as 1804 and place of birth either Swynnerton or Yarnfield. I've looked in the (downloadable PDF) register copies for St Mary Swynnerton, and there is no baptism there for a Matthew Plant around 1804.

When Matthew married Ann Dain, one of the witnesses was a George Plant. At Ashton Farm in 1841, in addition to Matthew's wife and children, there was a Matthew Plant born approx. 1781, so old enough to be his father. I can't find any other references to this older Matthew Plant in census or Free BMD deaths after 1841.

Apart from St Mary Swynnerton, what other church baptisms in that area could I try?
