Lincolnshire / How do I find the details to order a will copy?
« on: Sunday 19 November 23 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have a will abstract from the Country Court Death Duty Register (National Archives) for a will proved in the Peculiar Court of Long Stow in the Diocese of Lincoln, in 1806.

I know the testator, date and place of residence from the abstract, but to order a copy of the will from Lincolnshire Archives, I think I need some kind of reference. Does anyone know how I go about finding that?  Searching for Lincolnshire probate indexes seems to send me down all kinds of rabbit holes without any result.

Many thanks in advance if you can help.

Technical Help / Ancestry Two-step verification with DNA accounts not your own
« on: Monday 06 November 23 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
I manage two  DNA tests other than my own, which are linked to the owners' email accounts, because that is how they have to be set up.

Normally there's no need for me sign into them, but I came to realise recently that if someone wants to message about the trees attached, they - naturally - message the account holder, who in these two cases isn't interested, and won't notice. So now and again I sign in to check.

It isn't possible to attach more than one ancestry account to an email, so it seems that the only way to get around the Two-step verification is for me to create two more email accounts that I have access to, and change the emails on the Ancestry accounts.

Is there a simpler way to deal with this?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry matches - common ancestors
« on: Thursday 24 August 23 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Up until now it has been the case that if a DNA match on Ancestry has a tree which doesn't agree with your own, then they won't show up as having a common ancestor with you.

For example I have a fairly close match who shares GGgrandparents with me, but their tree shows their Ggrandfather (my GGuncle) with different parents from the ones I have for him.  So until this week, Ancestry didn't show that match having common ancestors with me.

Today, the common ancestor feature shows the link for both of us to my GGgrandparents.  The match hasn't changed their tree - in fact they don't seem to have been logged on for a while.

I have a few other match profiles which have changed in the same way - even though their trees have not been changed.

So I'm wondering  if, say the match I mentioned in the first paragraph logs in and looks at common ancestors, they will see me linked to the GGgrandparents they have in their tree (which are the wrong ones, obviously  ;D ).  Is this going to be helpful?

Derbyshire / Baptisms at Glossop
« on: Saturday 05 August 23 14:42 BST (UK)  »
Familysearch has baptisms at Glossop, such as this one (which is the one I am interested in; I believe the surname is actually Melce):

Jane Mele
Father Henry William Mele
Mother    Mary
18 Sep 1836
Event Place   Glossop, Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom
Event Place (Original)   Glossop, Derby, England

Ancestry has Glossop baptisms included in their Derbyshire parish register collection - but that one doesn't seem to be in the register they have.  I have looked for other baptism records that familysearch show as being in Glossop during the 1830s, but they aren't there either.

I'm not sure that Jane's family ever lived in Glossop - she was born just over the county border in Mottram, Cheshire.  I can't find a baptism for her in Cheshire.

Does anyone know where the baptisms that familysearch have recorded as Glossop might actually have been?

The Common Room / The fate of John Cave, sentenced to transportation for life
« on: Wednesday 20 April 22 14:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm not posting this on the Australia board, because I'm not sure if he ever got there.

John Cave was born 20 December 1820 to John and Sophia (née Bletsoe), and baptised at Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, although the family lived mostly at Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.
On 10 March 1852 he was found guilty of arson and sentenced to transportation for life.  However I can't see any evidence of him travelling - he doesn't seem to be listed in Ancestry's convict transportation registers - or later living in Australia.

If perhaps he died while waiting for the sentence to be carried out, does anyone know where that is likely to have been?

The Common Room / familysearch catalogue -just me?
« on: Monday 07 March 22 14:02 GMT (UK)  »
Yesterday I found some cemetery registers to browse  in the catalogue, and was working through them, but had to leave off for a while.  When I went back later they'd gone, and the catalogue search produced nothing at all, no matter what was searched for.  Same today; just a blank page.

I don't often use this part of familysearch, so I don't know whether it is usual to find this happening.  Can anybody shed any light on it?

Australia / Owen Rees of Balmain, NSW
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
Owen Rees was an immigrant from Wales, probably at some time during the 1880s, but perhaps a little earlier. He married Margaret Ann Burns at Balmain in 1888 and seems to have lived there for the rest of his life, dying in 1937 at the age of 79.

An Owen Rees, whose reported age on crew lists for NSW coastal vessels in 1882-1884 suggests that he was born in 1858, might be the same man.

Ancestry trees which include him differ as to his place of birth in Wales, some say Aberystwyth (not responding to message), some Llanboidy.

I am looking for Owen Rees, born in Aberystwyth in 1858.  His father and grandfathers were mariners.  The last sighting of him in Aberystwyth is the 1871 census, when he was still at school.

Are there any records from NSW which might show an exact place of birth for Owen Rees?  On Trove I can only see a newspaper notice of his funeral, with no biographic details - which doesn't mean that there isn't anything there; only that I can't find it.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

Does anyone know if there is an online source for Cambridgeshire wills?  I know that there are no actual images, but are there indexes?
Findmypast offers this page:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r21/

which, despite suggesting otherwise, only searches the whole of FindMyPast for what is entered in the searchbox, and doesn't lead to the index described.

Cambridgeshire Archives have wills for the Archdeaconry of Huntingdonshire listed, but not Cambridgeshire it seems.
I am looking for a will which is listed in the Death Duty Register index - so it definitely existed - but is it going to be possible to request a copy?

Wales / Married woman buried with maiden name?
« on: Tuesday 12 October 21 16:20 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know whether this is at all likely in Wales in the early 1800s?

I have an ancestor William Thomas b c1765.  He married Frances Williams at Llanfihangel Genau'r-glyn 6 February 1790, and they lived in Borth, where they baptised three  sons,  the last one being Evan, on 10 March 1805.  I'm fairly confident that I have the right couple, since their descendents usually take the earliest opportunity to name a daughter Frances.

I think that William possibly married for a second time to a Mary Evans in November of 1807 - at least, this William Thomas is a widower.

I can't see a burial of a likely  Frances Thomas anywhere in the area either before or after 1807 (there is one at Llanfihangel G-g in 1820, but she is a 3 year old). However there is a Frances Williams of Borth buried at Llanfihangel G-g on 19 March 1805.  Could this be Mrs Frances Thomas?
