Walter DAWE and his wife Jane REYNAR (sp?) lived in Cornwell for several generations.  Their grandson, Richard, moved his family to Tintagell for less than a decade and moved to Yorkshire where he switched to another type of mining.  Richard's father, James followed or may have preceded him.  Three of Richard's sons and some of James chidren moved on to Lancashire.  Richard's oldest son, Alfred, took his family to Canada and worked in the silver mines.  Two of his younger sons, Albert and Percy went to school in Manchester and became Congregational Ministers; they moved to Michigan in America.  Alfred ultimately moved his family to Michigan, then California.  James children lived on in Lancashire.  Alfred was my great-grandfather.  My grandfather, Tom, and my father's family stayed in Michigan.  I enjoy hearing from various family members here and in England.

Lanarkshire / LEILL, LYLE, LISLE - BARONY parish abt 1700 to NE 1900
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
[size/size]My ancestor, Robert Lyle (various spellings) was shown by records to have married Margaret Masson in New Patrick, Lanark abt 1716.  They had abt eight children.  Their son, Robert, was born abt 1732 in Govan Parish.  He married Janet/Jean Taylor in Kilmalcolm, Renfrewshire in 1756.  Robert and Janet had abt seven children, mostly boys.  Their second child, James , was born in 1768 in Govan.  He and several brothers ultimately immigrated to America where they changed the spelling of their last name to LISLE.  Not everyone who came did so.
Many of the boys settled in Penn. and married here.  James married Elizabeth (Awrey?) He had 12 children.  I assumed he  had other wives; it was common with a family that large.  The last child was born in Jefferson county, Ohio.  John, James oldest son, married a women in Ohio, Rebecca Fankboner, in 1826.  Their six children were all born in Tuscarawas county.  James died while the last two children were still young.  A good friend, George Leeper, was on hand.  I don't know his status - guardian or what.  When James (Belle) Lisle was older, he married Mary Ann Stevens Leeper in 1850 in Guernsey county.  The first two children were born in Illinois; the remaining eleven were born in Iowa.  My great-grandfather, John Belle Lisle, born in Illinois married in Iowa; they had six children.  He died in Nebraska; my grandfather found him.  My grandfather, Frank Leroy Lisle, married in 1910.  He and my grandmother, Margaret, raised six children.  I've probably given  you more info than you needed, but I wanted to tie the past to the present.  Some of the oldest records I found online, some by mail, but the best day was the first time I visited Glasgow and found some records on microfiche.  Thanks for any input you may have on any ancestor.

Roxburghshire / ROBSON IN NEWCASTLETON & Jedburgh
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor, John Robson was born in Newcastleton abt 1799 to Andrew & Mary Robson.  I'm not sure Mary was John's mother; just that she was at least one of Andrew's wives.  Andrew was born in Jedburgh abt 1770 and died in that county; don't know the town.  John was the oldest of six (I think).  The three younger children were born in England.   John died in Aspatria, Cumberland;  one of his younger sisters died in Bewcastle, England.  I've been to all of those towns and know they aren't far apart.  But I loose track of John from from 1799 to 1838.  Would appreciate any help filling in the gaps.  John was my maternal grandmother's grandfather.  Thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Richard Bowden DAWE - N. Skelton area NYR
« on: Thursday 08 August 13 17:14 BST (UK)  »
I've verified that my ancestor lived in the Skelton/Brotton area from 1871 to 1911.  Free BMD says Richard died about 1919 in Yorkshire, but I've found no other info.  His wife Jane was buried in St. Margaret's Anglican churchyard in 1888.  Richard married a woman named Emma.  I've had some problems verifying her correct name.  They were both born in Cornwall.  Richard's father James had also lived in the area until his move to Lancashire and remarriage.  Two of Richard's three sons who lived had moved to Lancashire.  The third one probably did at some point also as all three "boys" eventually emigrated to Canada or the US.  They all ended up in the US.  One or more of them may have visited their father in England before his death.  The sisters and their husband lived in the NYR area for awhile.  Richard and Emma lived with one of them.  There may still be DAWE's in that area.  I know there are other relation.  Would appreciate any help with Richard death.  The three Dawe males settled in MI where there are still two families.  The third went to FL.  Thank you for your input.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / DAWE - Burial of Richard Bawden/Bowden
« on: Saturday 26 January 13 04:02 GMT (UK)  »
My great-great-grandfather, Richard B. Dawe died in Yorkshire abt. 1919.  Don't have a specific date or place.  His first wife, Jane Leming Dawe, died 25 Mar 1888 in Skelton, Guisborough, NRY.  She was buried that same year in St. Margaret's Anglican Churchyard in Brotton, NRY. The family lived in N. Skelton, Saltburn, and Brotton.  There may be several infants buried there also.  Can anyone who is in that area tell me if Richard is buried near/with his first wife?  I believe his second wife was Emma Smeeth Buckingham Dawe whom he married abt. 1891.  She died in Lancashire abt. 1913.  Three of Richard and Jane's sons had moved to Burnley and Brierfield, Lancashire prior to sailing to North America.  They left Liverpool in 1904 (to Canada) and 1912 (NYC).  Thanks, RedFox

Lancashire / BURNLEY, LANCASHIRE
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 17:13 BST (UK)  »
I'd like to chat with someone familiar with Burnley and Lancashire.  I have several questions revolving ancestors who lived in and around Burnley, schools, where they're buried, as well as others who lived in Briersfield, Lancashire.  At least one of them attended Hartley College, Manchester University for seminary training.

Five years ago, I chatted with neil.s.  He was a great help to me regarding some DAWE / BAWDEN / BOWDEN family members.  Related to them is the HARRIS family.

I hope someone will be able to be of assistance.  You may contact me by personal message or through the list, as you desire.  Thank you.  RedFox

Cork / BELL / Belle - County Cork
« on: Monday 06 October 08 20:21 BST (UK)  »
I'm working on researching ancestors in Ireland; I've barely begun.  I just put another posting under County Down on the daughter of the man who FamilySearch shows was born in County Cork.

George Bell was born abt. 1720 in County Cork according to FS.  He is the father of Agness Nancy Bell born in 1765 in County Down.  George's wife was Mary Jane Jess, but no further information was given as to when or where she was born.

Agness emigrated to the US before 1800; I don't know if either of her parents did.  Agness married in Adams, Cumberland, PA, so I assume she docked in Philadephia, PA.  The name of the town may have changed since then.  Agness married abt. 1799 when she was settled.  It was her granddaughter who married in to my family line.

I would appreciate any information on Agness' father George Bell.  As I say, I don't know if his wife Mary Jane Jess was born in Co. Cork as well.  Thanks,  Redfox

Down / BELL / BELLE - Garvaghy, County Down
« on: Monday 06 October 08 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I've been working in-depth on my ancestors who've lived in other areas of the UK, but not Ireland.  I have only a few distant ancestors from there as far as I know and would like to increase my knowledge of the family and the country.

I have information from FamilySearch on Agness Nancy Bell.  FS says she was born on 12 Jun 1765 in Dromore Parish, Garvaghy, Co. Down to George Bell and Mary Jane Jess.  I don't know when she immigrated to the US but she married James Leeper in Adams, Cumberland Co., PA.  I was given a marriage date of 1799, but don't know if that date's correct unless the first two children were born to a prior wife.

If it is, she Agness and James had four more children in PA.  One son, George Bell Leeper, married Elizabeth Prestley in 1822.  Elizabeth's father was William; one or both of them might have been born in Ireland.  She was born about 1801.  It was one of their daughters who married into my line.  Most of this information was gleaned from FamilySearch or Ancestry.com.

I'd like to verify from Irish records, if possible, the births of Agness Bell and her parents George Bel [abt. 1720]l and Mary Jane Jess.  I will spend some time learning more about the country and Country Down on the internet, but would appreciate any input from listers.  It's been my experience on RootsChat that the listers are very knowledgable in many areas.  Bell is sometimes spelled Belle in my family.  It is still used in naming boys and girls.

Sorry, I forgot to sign this the first time.  Have just added a message under County Cork on Agness' father George Bell.  Thanks, RedFox

Cheshire / HEGINBOTHAM - my Cheshire link
« on: Monday 11 February 08 23:45 GMT (UK)  »
One of my mother's relation married a man born in Stockport, Cheshire abt. April 1869 according to UK Free BMD - FRANK HEGINBOTHAM.  His siblings were born in Bredbury, Cheshire.  Their parents were from Romily, Cheshire.  The only other research I've done is through FamilySearch.org.  Although the census records may have come from Ancestry.com.

After reading a bit on RootsChat, I've learned that parts of the county may have been absorbed into Greater Manchester in a move similar to that which created Cumbria, where my mother's family was from.  I'm glad to know about this absorbtion for genealogical purposes.

There were two brothers, Joseph and Charles, and one sister, Elizabeth as far as I know.  As far as I know, Frank was the youngest.  The parents were John and Sarah Heginbotham; I don't know her maiden name.

Frank appears in Cheshire in the 1871 and 1881 census records.  In 1900, he appears in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He possibly immigrated about 1885.  Have not tried to study his siblings, so there could still be family in England.  Would appreciate any input on this family.  Thanks, RedFox
