New Zealand Completed Requests / Livingstone Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 18 March 09 07:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there  :)

Could anyone please direct me to the best place i could source info on a ancestor buried in the Livingstone Cemetery in 1904-05. His name was David Farquharson, born in 1834, Scotland, died 30th Dec 1904. I have seen the Livingstone Cem doesn't seem to have an online database.

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you

United States of America / Baby Robert????
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to discover the mystery of a grave in Makawao Cemetery in Hawaii. Next to my Gt gt Uncle George Stephan Harris and his wife Violet M Harris (atherton) is a little headstone which says 'Baby Robert, Aug 1 1929' We have no record of a baby boy. George died in 1926 and Violet did adopt 3 daughters around 1929ish. Robert is a Harris family name. What i'm trying to discover is who this baby belonged to, maybe another adoption that ended too soon?

Any help/advice would be appreciated, i seem to be going around in circles (must be rusty as haven't done any research in ages!)

Thanks

United States of America / Stuck on Ellis Island
« on: Friday 24 October 08 01:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

I was wondering if anyone out there knows how i can go about researching my 3x gt Uncle George S Harris. From what family say, he immigrated from London to the USA, he lived in Hawaii, he worked for a company Castle and Cooke, where he met his wife (the bosses daughter) Violet Cooke. Now this is where i get a little stuck. I'm not sure what year he actually ventured to America, or where the marriage took place (assuming in San Francisco or Hawaii) Family say they came over to the UK on their honeymoon, but for some reason out stayed their visa.  Violet was allowed back in as she was a USA citizen, but George was stuck on Ellis Island where he had to wait until his case was investigated.  How long he stayed there we have no idea, but he contracted tuberculosis which advanced speedly and he soon died. Now i have Violet and George in the 1920 census together living in Honolulu as a married couple so i just don't know how this all fits together. By 1930 George has died and Violet is a widow. I also have a number of shipping records, the last travel document of George and Violet together was in 1923 which maybe when they returned from the UK (maybe a belated honeymoon??)

Is there any resouces out there which could have George's case on Ellis Island? I have tried to find his death but have had no luck either. Would love to give this elusive Uncle some kind of timeframe on his adventure to the USA.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks

World War Two / Help please? REME enlistment
« on: Friday 19 September 08 02:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi there  :)

I have just heard that my gt grandfather, Sidney Walter Henwood, enlisted with the REME, Royal Electrial and Mechanical Engineers. He was only enlisted for about a year, as he returned home from ill health. He was born around 1890 (i have been told that he may have lowered his age on the enlistment) he was born in Woolwich and he enlisted as a carpenter.

Is there anyway i can find more info on him? I have not done much research on WW2 records so have not much idea!

Any help appreciated!

The Common Room / How should I go about this??
« on: Wednesday 10 September 08 08:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Would love to hear some advice on how i should approach searching for my Nana's father. He was unknown to her. I have just been told who he was. It is POSSIBLE that he is still alive.

I wouldn't even attempt under different circumstances but i was told by my grandfather (my Nana's husband) that he was contacted in the 70s by Nana's Uncle who had been contacted by her father, he was looking for her. Now Nana's Uncle (for unknown reasons) told her father to 'clear off'. Uncle then rang Grandad and told him, of course Grandad got mad and they argued and never talked again! Grandad never told Nana as she would've been very upset as she always wanted to know him. So the fact that he did want to contact her makes me want to find out more about him! He lived in London and would've been born around the 1916 time. The reason he didn't marry my Nana's mother was because his parents didn't want him to.

Any tips on how i can go about this, in a sensitive manner ;) would be great! Its amazing to finally know his name and i'm still buzzing from it! Nana passed away in 2004 so it makes me so sad that we couldn't of shared this moment together!

Any ideas??

The Common Room / Advice needed
« on: Thursday 21 August 08 23:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My brother and his partner are expecting twin daughters (identical!) in November. My brother's partner is interested in family history too so i thought i'd put together a little book of our family tree for the girls. I probably wouldn't put all of it in, would probably just go back to the early 1800s and mainly centre on main ancestors.

What i'd love to hear, is any ideas on how i should go about this, presentation and format. Are there any good books that would allow me to record this much? One thing that puts me off a book (already bined etc) is that i'd prefer to type it up (my handwriting tends to slip a little, and change styles depending on my mood!!!) I've had a little play on the familytree maker program yet it doesn't really do what i had in mind.

Any advice would be much appreciated! I wanted to do something quite special for them!  ;D Especially as one is being named after me, my mother and gt gran!!! The other is being named with the mothers family names.....very nice idea  :D

Thanks

Sussex Lookup Requests / Death look up please?
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 02:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I am about to place a order for some certs so am trying to find a few more so i can send a bulk load, takes 6 weeks for me here in NZ.

I've had a couple of lookups done already in the last few days so hope i'm not pushing my luck! I appreciate any help at all!

I'm looking for a death for my gt gt Grandmother Lydia Victoria Brennan. She died sometime in the 1970s (sorry i haven't got a specific year) Her daughter died in Hastings so i thought she may have been close by (her daughter was apparently in a home so assuming/hoping Lydia was close by to visit!) Would love to get the death cert as family believes she had dementia (she was born in 1893) yet there was whispers that it was Alzheimers (which her grandaughter, (my grandmother) died from) So am hoping to settle the matter!

Also i am hoping someone could help me find my gt gt grandmother Edith Louise Palmer nee Bishop's death which we think could have occured between 1935-1950ish. Big time frame due to my grandfather only remembers overhearing about her death when he was a child. Edith was the black sheep of the family due to her leaving her husband, Abel Palmer, when her children were young. She ran off with another man so family say! Grandad remembers her returning when he was a child, seeking forgiveness from his father (which he denied) as she was sick, apparently she died not long after, Grandad grew up in East Sussex so maybe she didn't wander far, fingers crossed! Edith was born in 1888, Ticehurst.  Any help on this matter would be fantastic!

Have been trying to tidy up the more recent generations in the family. When i began i got rough dates etc but was concentrating on getting as far back as i could! Now i've done that i realise how much i have missed out on the closer kin!

Thank you

Sussex / Healthcare in Hastings 1960s
« on: Friday 20 June 08 07:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I was hoping someone with local knowledge would be able to please help me. I am looking for Nursing homes in the Hastings area that were used in the 1960s that would have cared for people who could have had healthproblems like MS.

My gt grandmother apparently died from MS at age 48 and was in a home at the time (due to no family wanting to look after her, her mother or brother would have been paying for her care. I have just had help from Sue15 over in the London board who found her death in 1967, Hastings. I am going to get her death cert (takes 6 weeks as i am in NZ)

If anyone can help me with the possible places that were around it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you
Cat
