Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / A Caveat regarding DNA
« on: Saturday 07 December 19 19:26 GMT (UK)  »
Recently I was contacted by somebody I have been in touch with over the years about families somewhat peripheral to mine. The gist of the message was that DNA had proved that the wife of George Roberts of Mottram in Longdendale (father of Hannah Roberts) was Mary Massey.

Whether or not George Roberts was actually the father of Hannah Roberts was a bone of contention because the marriage of George Roberts and Mary Massey was in 1719 whilst the first of their (supposedly) identified children was not born until about 1736. Clarifying that was something on my "to do" list.

In the event it did not take too long because Hannah's brother, George, had been a well known, and well documented, figure during his lifetime. There is an undisputed local history record giving George's birthplace, Deepclough in Glossop parish. George's will proves his relationship to Hannah and other siblings, which, along with other documents, provide a match to baptism records of some of the siblings being children of Joshua Roberts of Deepclough (not George).

A sibling of Hannah and George, Rachel, had married a William Massey and it appears that it may have been through that marriage that the DNA match to the Massey family arose.

So, the caveat is (as with so many other records) use DNA matching as a tool but do not trust it as proof on its own.

Derbyshire / Glossop Area Family Histories
« on: Thursday 09 May 19 19:47 BST (UK)  »
Around 20 years ago I created a set of web pages - one for each of our family names plus some others - containing the results of our analysis which we thought might have been useful to other researchers (happily it was in some cases). These included some marital links between the various families.

Our research then stalled to an extent between 2005 and 2016 because of various other calls on my time. Returning to research in 2016 I was able to easily access far more information than was possible in the early days and discovered errors in those early pages which should not really be published as they only serve to confuse. The old pages were, therefore, deleted and replaced by a set of pages generated from the database by the Ged2www program.

That set is still available but I have now found time to create a set of web pages based on families, but with more detail where available – pages which can be added to as time passes and more information comes to light.

Hopefully some people will find these pages of Glossop Area Family Histories - http://www.gjh.me.uk/glfamhis/gfh000.htm – useful.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hadfield Farm, Ilkley
« on: Monday 21 January 19 11:51 GMT (UK)  »
A week or so ago I discovered that my Hadfield family's old farm house (in Glossop, Derbyshire) went by the splendid name of Churn Milk Hall.
As it was such an unusual name I ran a google search and came up with a Churn Milk Hall Laithe, Ilkley, which strangely appeared to be part of a farm named Hadfield Farm.

My surname originates from the Glossop area so is not found much in the Ilkley area and that got me wondering, could a descendant of one of my GGG Grandfather's brothers have upped sticks and moved?

I've done a little research since and it appears that the name of the Laithe (barn) dates from the middle of the 19th century whilst the first mention of the farm name I found was in the 1901 census.

I'm hoping to be able to visit the Register of Deeds at Wakefield before too long but, in the meantime, wondered if anyone had any information about how the name of the farm originated.

The Common Room / Beware Find My Past dataset validity
« on: Friday 18 May 18 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hope I've posted this in the correct section.

Earlier this afternoon I received the Friday newsletter from FindMyPast which included a section headed UK deaths 2007-2016. The text says "Discover your relatives who died in the United Kingdom between the years 2007 and 2016. The collection covers England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Jersey and list the individual’s name, date of death, and location of death.".

As a quick test I decided to look for my mother, who died on 20 September 2015, only to find there is no record listed.

I contacted FindMyPast about it and the reply I received is: "These records have been provided to us by Wilmington Millennium, rather than the GRO, so if there are records missing they might not have the data available yet. It's not designed to be a complete collection of all those who passed away between 2007 and 2016.I hope that we will be able to add the record in the future as more are transcribed."

I've responded to them pointing out that the text in the e-mail gives no indication that it is "not designed to be a complete collection", nor does it reveal that it is just a mish-mash of records put together by a marketing company, rather than a dataset whose accuracy can be relied upon.

I've made the point that if FindMyPast is going to use datasets put together by companies for their own commercial purposes, rather than official datasets, then FindMyPast should be honest enough to say so instead of misleading customers.

Hopefully they will do so but I shall not hold my breath. This could easily be a reason why searches do not return expected results.

Derbyshire / Trade Directory transcripts for the Glossop area
« on: Saturday 20 May 17 09:35 BST (UK)  »
With the addition of the transcript of Kelly's Directory for 1941, the Glossop Heritage Trust web site now contains local entries from 28 directories published between 1788 and 1941.
Of interest to both local and family historians, they show how the town and surrounding area developed over that period.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Glossop parish registers on film
« on: Saturday 25 February 17 08:00 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where one might access the Glossop All Saints parish registers on film, rather than as transcripts?

I have a baptism of Molly Platt on 9th December 1759, supposedly the daughter of John Platt of Mouselow, with no subsequent information found for her, and the death/burial of Mary Platt aged 29 on 2nd/4th November 1789, supposedly the daughter of James Platt of Mouselow (John's brother), with no previous information found for her.

I suspect that these two people might have been one and the same and either my transcript is wrong, the original entry attributed the 1789 event to the wrong brother or the writing is such that it is easy to confuse the names John and James.

In order to try to solve it I should like to view a film of the register but, having just come back into research after some years of relative inactivity, I'm not up to date with film locations.

Any pointers as to where a film might be available (we live in Middlesbrough but can travel) would be appreciated.

Derbyshire / For those with Glossop interests
« on: Wednesday 20 February 13 08:58 GMT (UK)  »
We have just added a Photo Archive of over 250 scenes to the Glossop Heritage site at http://www.glossopheritage.co.uk/.

These are in addition to the existing photos which accompany the Local History articles.

They may not show your ancestors but may well show where they worked, shopped and played.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / HOYLE - Deanhouse Workhouse, Thongsbridge
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 08:40 GMT (UK)  »
Frank Edward and Clara HOYLE became Master and Matron of Deanhouse after serving as Porter and Portress at Crosland Moor.
Their daughter, Lucie, was the mother of my aunt (Dad's half sister).

My aunt died recently and I have found some HOYLE family photos and papers amongst her effects. Apparently Lucie had a brother, George Frederick, known in the family as Fred. From photos we know he became a soldier, possibly in the KOYLIs, but don't know if it was just WWI service or a career choice. One of the photos shows him with a sergeant's stripes. I've tried the CWGC site but, whilst there are one or two possibles there is nothing close enough to be positive.

If any descendants of Fred are out there and would be interesting in swapping information please get in touch.

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Old File/Disk Format Rescue Service
« on: Friday 26 August 11 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Do you have files created using an old version of software which will not run on your current PC?
In addition to our main machines, which run Windows XP, we also maintain computers running Windows 3.11, Windows 98 and Linux.

We have a large range of family history software which we can use for data rescue purposes:
TreeDraw, Family Tree Maker (all versions), Brother's Keeper, Family Historian, Roots Magic, Genbox, Genopro,
Generations Grande Suite 8, The Master Genealogist v4.0b, Family Tree Super Tools, v1.1.0, Personal Ancestral File v5.2 + PAF Companion v5.1.5, Family Tree Legends, Ages v1.3, Legacy v4/6/7, Comptons Family Tree v2.0, Family Origins v4.1a, Swift Ancestry Family Tree Designer, All four versions of GSP Family Tree, Ultimate Family Tree and Expert Personal Roots.

We also maintain working copies of older software (e.g. early versions of Lotus Smartsuite) which will handle older versions of word processing, spreadsheet and graphics files which "modern" software may be incapable of reading. In many cases we can convert your old file into a format which is readable by the software you currently have.

In addition we have retained the capability of reading 3.5 inch floppy disks, Iomega Zip 100 disks and Superdisks. If you have files on any of those types of disk which you can no longer read you can send them to us for rescue.

See Here for details.
