Dumfriesshire / Applegarth Church
« on: Friday 28 July 23 07:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Can anyone local to Applegarth give me contact details about Applegarth Church. I would like to arrange access to the church on 12th September for a short period. A friend who is visiting from Canada would like to see where her ancestors worshipped. Their burial is in the churchyard.
I tried two email addresses from google search which did not even send. I also googled Mr. Read who I thought was minister but he has moved from the area.

I see they have a facebook page but I do not post on that site.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Is anyone familiar with the school records held in Elgin Library. I accessed them a few years back when Libindx was in the school but did not explore whether there was a fische before 1915.
I am researching Alexandrina and Isabella Marr born 1904 and 1901. The record I have is entry 220 and 221 1st March 1915. I was wondering if there are any entries for these two girls prior to 1915. They, along with mum and dad, are recorded as living in Crieff in 1911. Mum, Jessie, died in Elgin on 19th January 1915. In a round about way I am trying to find what happened to Alexander Marr, father. You might think this is an odd way of doing it but I have explored other ways without success. He is not mentioned as deceased on his wife's death certificate. Her brother registered her death. Marriage certificates for the daughters all state father deceased by 1918.
Although Alexander was born 1870 I wonder if he joined up and the family came back to the mothers birth place then died.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. This query has been ongoing for several years.
Thanks
Betty

Canada / Passenger ship look up please
« on: Saturday 04 February 23 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the sailing of an ancester between January 1886 and November 1888. James born 1862, Alexina born 1860 and James R jnr. 1885, all with the surname McKenzie left Scotland and settled in Toronto. All born in Scotland. A daughter was born in Toronto December 1888. Not sure if there were sailings in the winter. If not that would cut the time period even more. I have done a lot of research on the family so it is purely the sailing that I am after. James was a carpenter and had lived in the Morayshire area of Scotland. The most likely place they would have sailed from would have been Glasgow but not certain.

Any help or advice on researching this would be much appreciated.
Thanks Betty

Moray (Elginshire) / Burghead Cemetery
« on: Thursday 08 September 22 16:41 BST (UK)  »
I visited Burghead Cemetery earlier this year. The cemetery as you leave Burghead.
I was looking for a grave stones for a Isabella Young Fraser nee McKenzie who died in 2016. Her husband William Fraser died on 20th February 1989. Their son George William Fraser died in 2014. All three newspaper deaths indicate they were buried in Burghead cemetery. Isabella's parents George McKenzie and Isabella Sutherland Young are both buried in the cemetery.  I found their stone on a previous visit.

We spent some time looking but we either missed it or there is no stone which I doubt or they have been buried with George and Isabella and the names are not mentioned on the stone.
my bet is we have just missed it. We did find a family stone that we had missed on a previous visit.

If anyone can locate a stone for the above names that would be great. A photo would be very much appreciated but even a confirmation that there is stone and a rough location would be great. It may be a wee while before we can get back to Burghead so any help with this would be much appreciated. This family are connected to George McKenzie who had the bakery many years ago. One son was the Clavie King.

Thanks, Betty

Perthshire / Primary School near Pittenzie Street, Crieff in 1911
« on: Sunday 31 July 22 13:30 BST (UK)  »

I am trying to find the most likely primary School that an Isabella Marr born in 1901 went to in 1911. I have found her living with her parents in the 1911 Census. The address looks like Southview Drive, Crieff. It was near Pittenzie Street.
By 1915 she is enrolled in a school in Moray. Her mother died in 1915. No sign of father.

In a round about way I am trying to find what happened to Isabella’s father Alexander Marr who disappeared after the 1911 census. Rumour has it that he died in a quarry accident but I have been unable to prove this. He was a Setmaker.

If I could find Isabella’s school records it might tell us when and why they left Crieff.

I have done a lot of research on trying to find Alexander but any suggestions would be much appreciated.
