Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1891, 1901 Hewitt
« on: Friday 20 April 07 06:34 BST (UK)  »
It would be helpful if someone could look up Annie Elizabeth (wife, b. 1854), George (head b. abt 1850), Ethel (Dau b. abt 1878) and Elsie (Dau b. abt 1879) Hewitt.
They were in Letheringsett, Norfolk, England on the 1881 census. I have not looked for them on the Free bmd yet, but I will tomorrow.

Thanks,
Ana

Warwickshire / Tombs family
« on: Friday 20 April 07 00:23 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information on the following Tombs family:

James Tombs, born 1836-1841 in Hanley Castle, based on census returns, worked as a bedstead maker and later manufacturer hiring many people. I can't identify him on the 1841 or 1851 censuses.

James had children by 3 women:

Ellen Bidder m. James in 1856
Ellen and James, both of whom died early (based on Free bmd entries and censuses)

Fanny Sutton (was his servant, called herself Tombs on the 1891 census, but it is unlikely that they married)
Percy b. abt. 1878, Birmingham
Sydney, b. abt 1882, Birmingham
James, b. abt 1885, Birmingham
Fanny and sons emigrated to New Zealand in abt 1892

Elizabeth Simpson (also James servant initially) m. James in 1893
Constance b. 1893, Birmingham
Harold b. 1895, Birmingham

I have been unable to find birth records for James, Percy, Sydney or James jnr - I have looked under Sutton and Tombs for an entry for the sons on Free bmd. Could they not have been registered at all?

Any information would be great, but I would be particularly interested in contacting any descendents of Constance and Harold in case they can tell us more about James and his family.

Thanks,
Ana

Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1851 1861 Mayston
« on: Saturday 07 April 07 00:14 BST (UK)  »
A kind person on Rootschat found the following entry for me for the Mayston family:

1841 Census England Norfolk St Clement
HO10/788/4/7
Magdalen Street

MAYSTON
Edward 50 Grocer Born in County
Ann 50 Born in County
Ann 20 Born in County
Rhoda 20 Born in County
Frederick 14 Born in County

And an Edward MAYSTON aged 6 living with the ELMAR family, with a Robert RANSOME, farm labourer in the same household.

Rhoda died before the 1851 census, but it would be helpful for me to have later census entries for the other members of the family.

Thanks,
Ana

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1871/61 Census - SMITH
« on: Friday 06 April 07 06:19 BST (UK)  »
On the 1881 census, there is the following family in Violet Hill, Stowmarket, Suffolk, England:
Eliza Smith, Head, Widow, 40, Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, Char woman
Edward Smith, Son, Unmarr, 18, Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, Laborer (General)
Norton Sml Smith, Son, Unmarr, 16, Harwich, Essex, England   Laborer (General)
Richard Smith, Son, Unmarr, 12 , Stowmarket, Suffolk, England, Scholar

I would like to learn whether this family is related to that of Norton Smith, b. abt. 1824, and his son Norton Ransom Smith, b. 1847. My thought is that Eliza may have been married to his brother, and finding Eliza before she was widowed would help me work that out.

Thanks,
Ana

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / 1841, and possibly 1851, Susannah Cave
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 08:16 BST (UK)  »
A member of my family has a  'Susannah Cave, b. abt. 1830 in Cambridge, England' on our family tree. She married in 1852 in New Zealand. There is a Susannah Cave, dau of Susannah Dockerill Cave, b. 20 APR 1830   Thorney, Cambridge, England, as a submitted record in the IGI. I have no idea whether or not this is her, but it is the only Susannah Cave in Cambridgeshire at this time in the records.

It would help me if someone could look 'Susannah Cave' up on the 1841 census and possibly on the 1851 census. I have no idea when she came to New Zealand.

Thanks,
Ana

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1861 Sheffield Mettam
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 05:44 BST (UK)  »
I would like to know where John Tunnard Mettam was on the 1861 census.
According to the free BDM index, he was born in 1853 in Sheffield, and his daughter's birth certificate lists his place of residence pre-emigration as Yorkshire. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1865. I don't have any family details, so, information from the census would be a real boon.

Thank you,
Ana

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Johnson
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 10:44 BST (UK)  »
It would help me if someone could look up James Johnson, whose parents were James Johnson and Susannah. They were married in Ragnall. When James came to New Zealand as a soldier in 1843, he described himself as 'of Ragnall' and said that he had been a labourer before becoming a soldier. He would have been born in the mid 1820s.

I do know that with a name like 'James Johnson', it may not be possible to single out one individual.

Thanks,
Ana

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 Bezant Wiltshire or Wales
« on: Sunday 25 March 07 20:14 BST (UK)  »
I would like someone to try to find the following person on the 1841 census:
John Bezant b. abt. 1803, chr. 23 Feb 1803
I have him down as married to
Sarah Cook
I don't have a place or date of birth for her, from the other censuses, it looks like b. abt 1795, in 'Abbey', but the marriage was in Wiltshire in 1822.
The only child I have is
Mary Anne Bezant, b. abt. 1823- 1831 in Chepstow
They were transcribed in one of the later censuses as 'Berant'

Thank you, Ana
