United States of America / John GORDON and Elizabeth KIDLEY
« on: Tuesday 19 March 24 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
John Gordon (possibly of Croydon, Surrey) and Elizabeth Kidley of Monmouthshire were both in the States c1880-1890. They had a son, Jack Wilmington Gordon born in Delaware about 1890, returning to Britain the following year.
Can anyone discover if they married in the USA or if there is any record of either of them there in that period? I believe John had travelled out to the States in 1873, aged 3 with his mother Catherine and siblings Thomas and Mary to join his father Henry.

The Common Room / Coal miners in First World War
« on: Wednesday 27 December 23 12:47 GMT (UK)  »
I know that the Government took control of the mines during the First World War, and also that many miners enlisted throughout, despite it being a reserved occupation. Does anyone know if miners were moved around the country to help with localised labour shortages? If so, was it likely that a Scottish miner would be transferred to the North Somerset mines?

Armed Forces / WWI service numbers and enlisting date
« on: Wednesday 27 December 23 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at the medal card for Lewis M Campbell which bears the service details: 1st Scots Guards 13693, PTE. Royal Engineers 312253.
The person to whom this refers, I think, is a Lewis McGibbon Campbell who was born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire on November 1st 1901. I know boys did enlist underage, but this seems as if he may have joined at 16 or younger. Do the service numbers give any indication of the date of enlistment, and was it unusual for a guards member to join the RE?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Mystery word in 1778 will
« on: Wednesday 24 March 21 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having trouble with a single word in a PCC will of 1778. It appears in the attached image after 'Maintenance' and the following line startup and Education'/ It refers to a bequest for child/children to assist in their upbringing. The word 'breeding' has been suggested, but I don't see a double e there although I do think it ends  ...ding. Any ideas please?

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Bredfield Burial c1801-10
« on: Saturday 02 January 21 12:05 GMT (UK)  »
Should anyone have access to the Bredfield parish register at some time in the future, could a look-up be made for a burial c1802-10 for a Caroline Fendt. She was born there as Carolina Wase in 1778 and married Bernard Simon Fendt, a German violin-maker in London in 1799. Their second child, another Caroline, was born in London in 1801, but I can find no trace of any burial for the mother although her husband married again in July 1810. The daughter's burial was in Bredfield in 1890, and the tombstone implies that her mother may have been buried there as well,

thanks in advance,

London and Middlesex / Caroline Fendt, mother and daughter
« on: Thursday 31 December 20 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
Caroline Wase married the German violin maker, Bernard (Bernhard) Simon Fendt at St Martins in the Fields on April 13, 1799. They had at least two children; a son given the same name as his father, and a daughter, given her mother's name. I can't find any record of either baptism. Caroline the mother must have died by July 1810 when Bernard married Elizabeth White, also at St Martins. I can't find a record of Caroline's burial either.

I understand that an Anglican marriage would have been a necessity, but I wonder if Bernard attended a Lutheran (or possibly Catholic) church and that the missing events occurred there. Any ideas?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Possible date for this photo?
« on: Tuesday 01 September 20 15:19 BST (UK)  »
This is rather an unusual photo, but the only one I have of my great grandfather, Stephen Bumstead. He died in 1903 and I think this may have been produced after that with the image taken from a group photograph. I've seen many photos of works groups from the late 19th century. I've included the whole of the photo as I have it - it is on thick card with nothing on the back. Perhaps the photographic studio dates might point to my theory being the correct one,

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA anomaly?
« on: Friday 14 August 20 19:53 BST (UK)  »
I have tested on Ancestry and found, among my matches, two individuals I know to be sisters. One shares 12cMs with me and one 13cMs. However, when I click on sister A and look at 'shared matches' there are none. Ditto with sister B. Surely they should show up on each others data as being a shared match with me?
