Sussex Lookup Requests / Baptism places for the Campbell family
« on: Wednesday 22 June 16 10:41 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone would be able to help me identify where the children of Septimus and Sarah Campbell were baptised?  I've found 5 children on Familysearch, but for four of them there is no place name, just a date and the county.  They are:

Charlotte - 13.1.1787 Salehurst, Sussex
Ann - 7.11.1790
Harriet - 24.12.1793
Henry - 19.6.1796
Jonathan - 14.5.1809

There is another child, Philadelphia (my 3x gt grandmother) who was born in 1791, but I can't find any sign of a baptism for her.  On the 1851 census her birthplace is recorded as Dallington, Sussex and in 1809 she married in Mountfield, Sussex.

In either 1793 or 1796 Septimus Campell of blacksmith of Mountfield is mentioned in a Will, and in 1797 there are Old Bailey records saying Septimus Campbell of Vine-Hall.

I'm also looking into Septimus' birthplace and his siblings (including Nonus, Decimus, Monimia, and Octavus!) - but I'll leave that for another question!

Thanks for your help,

Lancashire / 13 Princes Half Tide Dock Liverpool
« on: Monday 11 November 13 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with this address, and why it would be given as the place of death for a 14 year old?

I have the death certificate for my great aunt, Marian Mortimer Sides, which says that she died on 29 September 1921 at 13 Princes Half Tide Dock.  The cause of death was acute rheumatic fever and endocarditis, and my grandmother (her sister) was the informant and present at her death.

I've tried googling the address with no success, and have no relatives to ask, although I do remember being told that Marian was "sickly" and had a "deformed" arm.  Their father was a publican, and they had previously lived at the Castle Hotel at 50 Regent Road so I suppose it's possible they were visiting someone at Princes Dock when she was taken ill?

The Common Room / Administration of Effects??
« on: Saturday 23 June 12 10:51 BST (UK)  »
I've found an entry in the Probate Calendar "20.7.1872 Administration of the effects of James Dean-Mortimer who died 7.10.1857 was granted at York to Sarah Dean-Mortimer, widow.  Effects under £300".

From reading other messages on here I'm presuming it won't be worth sending my £6 for a probate search?

Does anyone know if there is any way of finding out any more details about what was in this, or why it might have taken 15 years for the Administration to have been granted?

I haven't had any experience of sending for a probate search so far!!

Thanks for your help,

Janet

Denbighshire / Chapels in Bontuchel and Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn
« on: Tuesday 22 November 11 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Would anyone be able to help me with information about the Chapels in Bontuchel and Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn??

I've previously posted a question (a while ago!) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,283455.0.html about my Jones and Roberts relations, and finally managed to get over to the Ruthin Records Office a couple of weeks ago.  I found a few marriages in the Parish Records (via info from North Wales BMD), but apart from that didn't have a great deal of success.

Someone suggested that I should send for a few marriage certs to find which chapels/churches were used by the families (why didn't I think of that before??!!) which I did - only to find that they took place in Bontuchel Chapel and Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn Chapel in Rhewl (both Calvinistic Methodist).

I've now found that Ruthin Records Office only has a few early baptism records for Bontuchel and nothing for the Chapel in Rhyd-y-Cilgwyn, which is possibly still open.  I've tried to find how to contact them on Google but without any luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I may find out if any records for these chapels are accessible?

Thanks,

Janet

World War Two / Uncle Eddie - the missing years!!
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 11:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have the "certificate of discharge" book for my gt uncle (Edward Jones) and would love to find information about his war days.

There is a 11 year jump in his book between August 1935 and August 1946.  I also have some photos of him, and in the frame there are medal ribbons for the Defence Medal, the War Medal, 1939-1945 Start and the France & Germany Star.

Please excuse my ignorance, but would he have been in the Merchant Navy during the war, or would it have been the Royal Navy?

I'd be grateful for any guidance before I start filling in the forms!!

Sussex Lookup Requests / Marriage Lookup - Wilmshurst/Cambell
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 22:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm having another look at some of the information I included when I first started my tree (before I realised I shouldn't take as gospel information from other people's trees!!) and have found myself going round in circles ::).

Would anyone be able to help me find a marriage, possibly on 16.1.1809 in Mountfield, Sussex between Thomas Wilmshurst and Philadelphia Cam(p)bell?

In 1841 I find my gt gt gt-grandfather Thomas Wilmshurst (b1819) living with Philadelphia Munday, who I think is his mother (but remarried to Hugh Munday).

My notes say that Thomas (snr) was born 1781 in Hartfield, Sussex, and according to the census, Philadelphia was born in 1791 in Dallington, Sussex.

If anyone is able to help me confirm any of this it would be fantastic.  I've tried FamilySearch with no success and the Sussex OPC site, but that doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Australia / 1886 - WILMSHURST Family onboard the "Aigburth"
« on: Monday 22 June 09 18:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I wonder if anyone can help me.

On Ancestry I have found some of my Wilmshurst family arriving in New South Wales onboard the Aigburth on 12.5.1886 (listed as WILMHURST).  All the family (Fred, Mary A, Edgar, Thomas, Edith, Jessie and Maud) seem to be there, plus 3 extras that I'm unsure about (Fred, Fred H and Grace).

I've tried in vain to find more details about the passenger list - can anyone point me in the right direction to find ages, occupations etc?

Thanks,

Janet

Ayrshire / Ayr Advertiser - Can Anyone Help?
« on: Monday 30 June 08 10:49 BST (UK)  »
I've found a couple of references to the Ayr Advertiser between 1816-1846 and wondered if anyone can tell me if it is possible to request a lookup for these.

Two of the references are, I presume, obituaries - for Janet Boyd/Skelly who died on 8 Aug 1846 at Underry Bank, Fairlie and for her husband John Skelly Jnr, farmer in Laigh Monktonhill who died 12 Dec 1816.  There is another reference to the Ayr Advertiser on 21 Jun 1838 for this family, but I'm not sure what it relates to.

I'm trying to find who John's father was - I have one contact who suggests his father was Robert, but the fact that he's been described as "John Skelly Jnr" would make me think his father was also called John  ???

Thanks for your help.

Lanarkshire / Looking for the Thomson Family after 1861
« on: Tuesday 27 May 08 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,  I wasn't sure which section to put this question in, so as well as the Emigrants section, I thought I'd add it here too!

I wonder if anyone would be able to help me trace another of my elusive Skelly family?  This time it's Janet - who married William Murray Thomson in Irvine, Scotland in 1838 and disappears (as far as I can see!) after the 1861 census.

At that time the family were living at No 1 St Vincent Park, Govan, Glasgow :

William M Thomson, born 1815, Dabry(?), Ayrshire -  an Iron Merchant (in 1851 a Commission Merchant)
Janet Thomson, b1815, Monkton, Ayrshire
Jessie S Thomson, b1843, Govan, Lanarkshire
John Thomson, b1845, Govan - Accountants Clerk
William M Thomson, b1846, Govan
Jane C Thomson, b1849, Govan
Adam S Thomson, b1850, Govan
Robert McG Thomson, b 1853, Govan
David Thomson, b1855, Govan

In 1861 Janet's sister, Margaret and her family were living next door at No. 2 St Vincents Park, but in 1862 they left Scotland aboard the "Helenslee" and emigrated to Queensland, Australia.  This is the link to all the fantastic information that Rootschatters (particularly Ruskie and Karenlee  ) have found for me http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,301639.0.html.

Although Robert and William appear to have been in partnership in a shipping company "McGavin and Thomson" I've been unable to find the Thomson's in Australia (or anywhere else for that matter  ) - mainly by searching Ancestry and the Australian BMD's.

There is a family connection with the island of St Vincent, in that my gt x 3 grandfather Adam Skelly was born there when his father Adam (Janet and Margaret's brother) was there as a Commission Merchant.  I have adverts from McGavin and Thomson for cargo for the barques "Janet Boyd" (named after Adam, Janet and Margaret's mother) and the "Margaret Skelly".  David Boyd, their uncle, appears to have had a business on the island and in his Will left most of his possessions etc. to his nieces and nephews.

Any help with this family would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Janet
