Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Italy (Br. Sub) 1851
« on: Wednesday 16 August 23 18:11 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

My 3x gt grandad, came from Italy. He arrived here sometime before 1836, when he married his Irish bride in St. Nicholas' Church in Liverpool. I have not found any records for when/how he arrived.

I cannot get beyond his birth in Italy (Lucca, possibly a surrounding area) and many of the records in Lucca, around this time, have large gaps.

My current question, in a bid to find anything out about his family is:

If Giovanni BINI (John Beney 1851 census) became a Br. Sub (British Subject), what would this involve and can I get details of how he came a British subject? I'm ideally hoping to find father's name, village/town of birth and anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Dublin / KENNY - Sophia b.1810 Dublin
« on: Friday 01 April 16 02:20 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I have tried, so far in vain, to find any Irish relatives of my 3x gt grandmother.

Her name was Sophia KENNY. English Censuses say she was born in Dublin in 1810.

At some point she came to England.

She was married in Liverpool to Giovanni BINI, it appears to have been recorded as Catholic marriage at St.Nicholas Liverpool on  23rd May, 1836. Their names were misspelt as John Bone/Bene and Sophia Kenney. One of the witnesses appears to be James Prazzoni.

Their first known child, Caroline, was born in Warwick Street, Manchester on 26th October 1838 (surname is given as BENI).

The second child Teresa was born in Liverpool, the third a boy, Angelo George, in Wolverhampton, The fourth and fifth, Sophia (jnr) and Austin were born in Sheffield where the family settled.

I have looked for George and Austin KENNYs in the hope that Angelo's middle name or Austin's first name was that of Sophia's father, but I've found nothing that I can definitely link to my Sophia.

Please can anyone help or advise?

Thanks in anticipation,

Michelle

Lancashire / Lancashire Marriage Help Please?
« on: Monday 29 July 13 00:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I need help/guidance or something please.

I am looking for the marriage of my 3 x great grandparents, but I think they may have been married before 1837 and there are numerous spelling anomalies with this Irish-Italian couple. How might I find a marriage please? I'm guessing its in Lancashire somewhere as the births of the first two children are in Manchester and Liverpool respectively.

This is what I know (I think ;)) :

Giovanni BINI (b.1804, Lucca Italy d. Sheffield 1870)

Sophia KENNY (b.1810 Dublin Ireland d. Sheffield 1869)

First child, Caroline born Manchester - 1838 (birth cert.lists as surname BENI)

Second child Teresa born Liverpool - 1840  (Baptism record on Ancestry has parents as Johannes BINI and Sophia CHIENI - do baptisms list mother's maiden name or were they not in fact married as stated on Caroline birth cert? I don't think either could spell due to the variations of spelling BINI and KENNY)

Third child Angelo George born Wolverhampton 1843 (listed as surname BENEY)

Fourth child Sophia, according to census records born Sheffield 1845, no idea how they are spelling the surname this time, but they settled in Sheffield.

Fifth child (my 2 X G. Grandfather) Austin b. Sheffield 1952, no idea on surname spelling when he was born, this info is taken from Censuses.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Dublin / HEFFERNAN
« on: Thursday 04 July 13 02:06 BST (UK)  »
My mother-in-law has recently passed away and we have inherited a whole heap of old photos, all of which have no names on :( . Aside from this being incredibly frustrating it has fuelled my interest in my husband (and children's) Irish relatives. Despite having Ancestry membership I cannot find the birth of my husband's grandmother, or that of her sisters.

My m-i-l mentioned Dún Laoghaire in relation to my husband's grandmother,. I have found a photo of my f-i-l at Red Island, Skerries in 1952, a photo of a HEFFERNAN man on what I believe to be O'Connells bridge in Dublin and lots of 1927 (?) wedding photos.

To my knowledge there were three sisters who left Ireland for England and settled in Leicester. They married in 1923 and 1927 (2 sisters)

Lillian Margaret HEFFERNAN
Agnes E HEFFERNAN
Kathleen HEFFERNAN

Lillian is found under HEFFERMAN in marriages.

Can anyone help me to find their births or their travel to England please?

Thanks,

Michelle

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Beatrice KILNER in 1911 Census??
« on: Saturday 23 February 13 22:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've not been on here for a while, so forgive me if I've forgotten stuff.

I'm trying to find Beatrice KILNER b.13th Oct.1897 in the 1911 Census.

I've found her with her parents and sisters in the 1901 Census, in Skelmanthorpe, Huddersfield.

Willie Kilner    32
Ann Kilner    33
Norah Kilner    12
Hilda Kilner    6
Beatrice Kilner    3

She got married aged 18 to Herbert HIGSON in Scissett, 5 Aug 1916.

I've searched on Ancestry for Beatrice, Hilda and Norah, but I just can't find them on the 1911.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you,

Michelle

Census and Resource Discussion / London Land Tax Records. Why??
« on: Friday 06 July 12 16:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm not sure whether this is the appropriate place to post, but I have found my great grandfather's name on the London Land Tax Records, via Ancestry.

"Tenant:    F Bini
Proprietor:    T M James
First Year of Section:    1923
Civil Parish or Ward:    St Bartholomew
Borough or County:    City of London
Call Number:    MS 11316/513"

As far as I'm aware he lived in Shireoaks, a village in North Nottinghamshire with his family. His house was almost certainly owned by the Duke of Newcastle.

I thought that the London Land Tax records were for properties/land in London. Can anyone tell me why he might be listed please.

Thanks,

Michelle

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / BINI to NSW Australia
« on: Monday 09 January 12 23:09 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first time attempting to find relatives in Australia, I'm a member of Ancestry, but I haven't got "worldwide".

I stumbled upon a newspaper engagement announcement Nora BINI to William HOULAHAN. The article is below, the spelling was quite poor, so I've amended where I felt appropriate.

"HOULAHAN-BINI.--The Engagement ls announced of Nora, second daughter of Mrs. E. Gallagher, Quigg Street., Lakemba, and the late Austin Bini, of Sheffield. England, to William Houlahan. ex-A.f.P., only son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Houlahan, of Olenars, HOK'S'S (HOWES?) Valley. "

There was no date on the article, but I do know that the late Austin BINI and family were still in Sheffield, England in 1911. Nora was born in Sheffield in 1911, so I'm guessing it was after 1930 due to her age.

Nora had a sister, Olga b.1910, I don't know whether she went out to Australia, but I'm assuming she did.

I'd appreciate any help in finding them please?

Thanks in anticipation.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / ANDREWS Clifford Robinson
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 20:23 BST (UK)  »
I've not been on here for ages, so hope I'm in the right place. A friend of mine from Canada is looking for her birth family; she's adopted.

Her grandfather was Clifford Robinson ANDREWS born abt 1893, died Quebec 1968. My friend believes he was born in Liverpool, emigrating to Canada sometime after that. Unfortunately, I can find no record of him or his birth in Liverpool, so I wondered whether you wonderful Rootschatters could help please?

The only other information she has is that he married a Roberta BARTLETT, born 1904 died 1990. She may have been born in Canada, we don't know. They had a daughter, Joan Marilyn ANDREWS, who at 22 years gave birth to her in the 1950s and she was adopted.

Any information will be very gratefully received.
