The Common Room / 1939 - queries answered by FindMyPast?
« on: Thursday 03 December 15 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry if this has already been discussed, but has anyone had a real answer from the FindMyPast team to any of their queries.

They responded so far as to ask for more information on the household that I was charged twice for, which I sent them, but it's now becoming weeks and still no direct response as to why I got charged twice for the same household, on the same page, when I tried to reopen it.

They have not corrected this error.

Does anyone know if clicking the wrong name in the household, automatically burns up credits like this?

Ireland / Has anyone here seen KELLY? Peter & Elizabeth
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 00:04 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the best place to post as they could be anywhere.  Mods feel free to move if there is a more appropriate place.

I'm looking for Peter & Elizabeth (nee McLoughlin) Kelly.

Married in Dublin in 1859 and had four children there up to 1870.  The last child died soon after birth and was buried at Glasnevin, but the others don't seem to be listed there.

So surviving children after 1870 seem to be Rachel <1860>, Anna <1862> and William <1864>.

There is a possible sighting in Tighe Street in 1878, but after that I can find no trace of them anywhere (searched irishgenealogy.ie, FindMyPast worldwide and Ancestry (UK & Ireland)).

Can anyone else find them?

Technical Help / Is anyone else having difficulty with Ancestry site today?
« on: Saturday 01 March 14 13:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Not sure whether this is my computer or the Ancestry.co.uk site.

I can connect, logged in etc. but any attempt to do a search or even select a database or look for trees gives me connection error problems.  However connecting to everything else OK.

Had a problem for last couple of days that screen formatting on FTDNA site, match listings page, has gone crazy, but that just seems to be with IE(11).

The Ancestry problem occurs just the same in Firefox too.

Any suggestions?

Westmeath / Thomas Quirk(e) of Westmeath, born about 1840?
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 14:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am wondering if anyone with access to early Westmeath resources has come across a family called James and Catherine Quirk or Quirke.

Their son Thomas, gives his birthplace as Westmeath in 1901, and, at his first marriage in 1864, gives his parents' residence as Mullingar.  Note that that does not mean that they were still alive at that time, as his bride's parents also had an address in Dublin on the same record, but I now know that they were already buried in Glasnevin by then.

I have found the marriage of a James Quirk to Catherine Glennon, and also two baptisms for their children in the Mullingar registers, but no sign of Thomas or any other family of the same name, in that parish.  This led me to wonder if perhaps the family had moved around, or if this might be a different family.

If anyone knows of any other Westmeath parish (catholic) with Quirk(e) baptisms, or burials maybe for James or Catherine, I would be very grateful for pointers for other areas to search?

Technical Help / Yahoo spam from my account
« on: Friday 17 January 14 08:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have a yahoo uk email account that is quite old and have used for a variety of purposes. It is not he one that I use to log in here.

Since yesterday evening it has sent out at least two spam emails to a variety of addresses, many of which I haven't used for about 10 years.

I don't think anyone has logged in as me, as nothing seems to have changed in the account and it is not saving the messages in the Sent folder although the default is set to do that.

The only evidence of these messages so far is auto-reply or bounced back from addresses not in use, but the bounced back messages list addresses the messages were sent to.

I didn't think that there was a contacts list attached to that account but it refers to contacts within my profile but won't let me get in to delete them at present.

Can anyone advise what I can do? I'm not well and could do without this stress.

Hi all,

I have recently taken a Family Finder DNA test which appears to confirm that my Great-grandfather James McDonough who left Mayo in 1851, having very recently married a Margaret Oliver in Kilconduff, was related to other McDonoughs who also went to Bilston, in the English Black Country, at around that time.

I am now very interested to know if they were related to others who made the same journey.

I also have O'Malleys (William & Mary and their sons John & Martin, at least) who left the Claremorris/Crossboyne and Islandeady area of Mayo in the 1840s and 1850s to move to Dublin to become policemen, and from there, some to England and perhaps on to other countries too.

If anyone has any of these families in their history, and has taken a similar test, I would be interested to know if we have any links, as documentation for Mayo in the period 1825-1845 seems to be sadly lacking.

I have over 20 relatively close matches (3rd-4th cousin) and a couple of hundred possible more distant matches from this test but cannot find the (particularly baptism) documentation to map out these parts of my family tree.

Ireland / Henry and his father, Robert Cuthbert - reviewing old research
« on: Friday 03 January 14 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've put this in Ireland General, as I think that the Robert Cuthbert that I am looking for may have come from elsewhere than Wicklow, where he was living in 1825 (maybe from 1810 onwards), or Dublin where his son Henry later lived.

My Great-great-great-grandfather Henry Cuthbert lived in Dublin from about 1825 onwards.  He was a bookbinder, having been apprenticed from 1825-1832, and seems to have first married an Elizabeth and later a Martha.  His indentures prohibit marriage, so I presume his first marriage was not earlier than 1832 and that his second marriage took place before 1841.  He had at least one son with Elizabeth (in September 1832) and she probably died in 1834, possibly in or following childbirth.  However, I can find neither marriage.

His apprenticeship indentures state that his father was Robert Cuthbert, steward of Kilquade house in County Wicklow.  However, his birth/baptism does not seem to have been recorded there.

There are a Robert and Olivia whose children were baptised in Delgany close to Kilquade, from 1810 onwards, that I am guessing may be the same family but my Henry is also thought to have had a brother James with no evidence for his baptism at Delgany either.

As the family resident at Kilquade House at that time were of military background, I thought is possible that Robert had also been in the army prior to his employment there.

However, I have been unable to find any evidence of this.

So I am looking for:
1. Robert Cuthbert, father of Henry (and possibly also James), before 1810 - marriage and children born prior to 1810. .. or possibly just before 1825, in case the earlier Robert and Olivia at Delgany were just a coincidence.
2. Henry Cuthbert, marriage to Elizabeth - I have a baptism for their son Robert Thomas in 1832 at St Peters (CoI, Dublin), his army records and some later court documents.
3. Henry Cuthbert, second marriage to Martha - I have a baptism for their daughter Emma in 1842 also at St Peter's, but have not yet found one for their son Henry born about 1841.
4. James Cuthbert?

Apologies if some or all of these questions appeared elsewhere a long time ago but I am trying to take a fresh look at these problems.  If I find earlier threads I will link them in.

Dublin / Richmond Bridewell, Criminal Offence
« on: Thursday 21 November 13 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure if this is the best place for this, so mods can move if there is a more appropriate/general place.

I have a young man of 29 years, who was detained in Richmond Bridewell, in 1863, for "not going to be attested after taking the 1/-"

He appears to have served six weeks hard labour.

Would I be correct in thinking that this means that he failed to turn up after signing on for the army?   And would that have been the end of it, or would he still have been sent on to the army after his sentence?

If so, should I be also be able to find army service documentation for him?

Dublin / Bride Street - which RC parish in 1851?
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 03:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm looking for several baptisms in Dublin with the name of O'Brien (or sometimes variants).

Unfortunately, as this is so common, it's not possible to be sure that I have found all the possible options, let alone the correct one.

I have now found one with a consistent year of birth around 1851 and location of birth as Bride Street.

Would this be in the RC parish of St Nicholas at that time? or were there other options that I should check too?
