London and Middlesex / Struggling to follow siblings
« on: Wednesday 13 April 22 18:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello :)

I've been trying to trace the siblings of my gt gt gt grandmother, and it has proven very tricky so far.

My gt gt gt grandmother, Georgiana Gadsdon, was baptised 4th Jan 1835, at St Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey. Her parents were William Gadsdon, a painter, and Elizabeth nee Lawley. Elizabeth was William's second wife.

Children I have found born to William and Elizabeth are:

Elizabeth 1826
Jemima 1830 d. 1830
Keziah 1830 d. 1830
William 1831
GEORGIANA 1835
Josephine 1836

Each of these baptisms has William's occupation as either a painter or a colourer.

William had previous children with his first wife, Martha Rose (1781-1824). The baptisms I have collected are as follows:

Elizabeth Rose 1802
David 1806
Charles 1808
Martha 1811
Helen 1817
Emma 1817
George 1819
Robert 1822

I believe Emma married a Walter Church and died in 1888.

All other Gadson siblings, I have been struggling with for a few years now.

I have followed Josephine Gadson on a few censuses, and know that she passed away near my gt gt gt grandmother in Huntingdonshire, in 1899.

My struggle is, that bar Emma and Josephine, and my own direct ancestor, I am struggling to locate any of the other siblings.

I think I have located Nathan/Nathaniel on the 1841, 1861 and 1871 censuses, but he is seeming very elusive. On the 1841 he is in the house of James Shaw, an accountant, living in St Mary, Lambeth and his occupation is listed as a print colorer. (HO 107/1058/5) His age is 25. This all seems to point to the correct man.

I can't find trace of him in 1851, even with lots of different spellings of the names.

In 1856, he is listed in the City and County directory as Nathan Gadsdon, Print Colorer, 9 Wine Office Court, Fleet Street.

By 1861, he appears to be enumerated as Nathan Gadsden aged 56, a print colorer, born on the British Channel! He has a wife, Sybella aged 34  born Chelsea, MDX, and a daughter, Ann M aged 11, also born Chelsea, MDX. Thet are living at 10 Gough Square, St Dunstan, MDX. (RG 9/219)

By 1871, they are at the same address, but Nathan is now Matthew Gadsden. His age is 66 and he is a print colorer, born Lambeth. Sybil is there, aged 42. No sign of the daughter, Ann M. (RG 10/424)

I have an electoral register for 1887, of Nathan Gadson living at 11 Stanhope Street. But I cannot find him, his wife, or daughter on the 1881 census.

The workhouse admission records on Ancestry, show that Nathaniel Gadston was admitted on the 11 Nov 1890 along with his wife, Sybella. He died on the 06 Nov 1896 in the workhouse.

A Sybella Gadston was admitted the the CLSA workhouse on 17 Jul 1902 and sent to the Hendon Workhouse on the 23 Jul 1902. I believe she died in 1908, but I can find no trace of her, or Nathan, on the censuses after 1871.

I apologise for such a long post, but I am hoping that after reading all of this, someone may be able to point me in a good direction of where to look next!

Thank You in advance for your time!
Emma :)
